Brown Family adds Dogs to Routine

The Brown family has had a busy winter, so far. Nicky was feeling left out because Brad was having all the knee surgeries, so she joined in the fun with a surgery for a meniscus tear and an ACL rupture.

Mallory’s All Star Cheer Team earned a bid to Summit for the second year in a row. (Summit is like the Super Bowl to the cheer world.) She will travel to

Orlando to compete in May.

Sydney now has a permit to drive and is working as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the local pool where she previously competed on the swim team.

Kendall is on a performance team for dance. She does pom, jazz, ballet and hip hop. And if all of that isn’t enough to keep us busy, we have teamed up with Lucky 7 Dog Rescue to volunteer and be a foster family for dogs in the Green Bay area looking for forever homes.

Peters-Hallquist Growing Family

There’s a lot happening in the Hallquist household. For those that may not know, Jon and I are expecting a little boy in May. This will be the fourth Hallquist grandchild that is a boy! Joe has two boys and Danielle has a little boy due any day now. We’ve been busy fixing and finishing any incomplete things around our house so we can focus on our new role as parents. We are really excited for this new chapter in our lives! I am sharing a couple of ultrasound photos from our 20 week appointment, the top one is a side profile of his face and the bottom one is a 3D of his face. You can see his little hand hiding some of his face. In addition to this, we also adopted a puppy in August (right before I found out I was pregnant!). His name is Finch, and he is an adorable handful. He just started day training lessons so we are hoping to see some improvement on his walks and listening skills very soon! We decided to adopt a second dog so our older dog Nyx would have a companion. He is a very happy puppy and loves to cuddle. We love having him as an addition to our growing family. I’ll also be turning 30 next month! My 20’s have been nothing short of eventful, in the best and worst ways. I’m excited to start off this new decade with a bang, I know there’s so much to look forward to.

All the world’s a stage for the Dziedzic family!

Wesley is now a Junior at the University of North Texas. This January, he traveled with the UNT One O’Clock Lab band to attend the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship in New York City. This inaugural two-day invitational competition features ensembles from ten of the most well-regarded university jazz programs in the country. The event will include a combo showcase in The Appel Room and final concert featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in Rose Theater. Modeled after our signature Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival, this event works to celebrate the excellence and achievements of the next generation of jazz musicians.

On Saturday night he performed a piece he arranged for the combo showcase of the event. A video is here: https://youtu.be/g6eEFDz-td4

Grace is half way through her first year in the Theater Design & Technology program at SUNY Purchase University near New York City. As a freshman, she works in different areas of technical theater. She has completed rotations in props and scene shop and will be finishing freshman year with electrics, costumes and paint deck. For one show, the scenery called for the entire stage to be covered in dirt. Grace had to help move all the dirt in and out of the theater for the show. They even had to learn how to disinfect the dirt between shows to prevent the actors and techs from getting sick.

Recently, Brookfield application engineer, Brian Roltgen, was featured in the West Bend, WI newspaper for his volunteer work with Young Eagles. Enjoy the article!

West Bend - by Brianna Vogel

One local pilot has given more than 110 children a heightened perspective through the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles.

Brian Roltgen has been giving volunteer flights to children and their families for seven years and said he has no plans of stopping.

“it is a great experience and a great program; my son is in Scouts and I’m happy to be involved in events every year,” Roltgen said. West Bend and other cities have EAA chapters that hold Young Eagle events, in which he flies with as many as 100 kids in a day. “What’s most rewarding is the satisfaction of sharing my

passion with kids,” he said. “That’s one of our jobs as parents and adults, to expose kids to as many different activities as possible to discover their passion.”

That is how he became a pilot. One afternoon his parents drove past an airport with a sign offering free flights and decided to take the opportunity. It was Roltgen’s first time in a small plane.

“I was hooked ever since, and now I get to give that experience to others,” he said. Oftentimes, since the plane seats four people, he is also giving parents their first flight in a small aircraft, so the whole family enjoys the memory together.

“Every kid is different- some are eager and we let them take the controls, others kind of shy away from it,” Roltegn said. All kids sit in front and are given the same ability, but it is their decision what to make of the time in the air. Once back, they get a log book with the flight information and a membership to EAA.

“Most people are super grateful and love it, but I haven’t followed up with anyone I have flown to see if they are pursuing becoming a pilot,” Roltgen said. “It would be interesting to know.”

Even if one child is positively affected, he said it is worth showing them the world from a different view.

“I’m a lifetime EAA member and I see this as part of my responsibility as a pilot to share the passion and show it’s a safe activity too,” Roltgen said. “I don’t see myself ever stopping.”

CMAFH recently added an exciting new product line in the hoses and fittings category! The vendor is RYCO and their newest technology is found in the J Seal product line.

“JSEAL technology separates us from what anyone else is offering in this field,” said Bryan Smith. “It has a proprietary design that minimizes leaks and allows for higher pressures.”

According to the company website, JSEAL doubles the torque, doubles the strength and doubles the working pressure of standard JIC fittings. No sweating, cracking, stretching or leaking- RYCO guarantees it!

Pre-RYCO, CMAFH was a user of hoses and fittings in the systems group, but we did not distribute any similar products. Now we both use and distribute RYCO.

An additioanl innovation that RYCO offers is their QRAM Ryco Asset Management System. The Q stands for Quick - Quality - Qualified and Quantified.

Customers benefit in many ways from subscribing to QRAM. Their assets become globally trackable and transferable with 100% accuracy and all product history and manufacturing information is stored in the product tag. Best of all, QRAM makes reordering a breeze. RYCO says that QRAM will improve customer retention by providing a direct link from customer to supplier when they need it most.

Hanover Park Server Room Gets a MakeoverDave Cox

Over the past 17 years I have already re-cabled the server room two other times. But this time

was a massive undertaking. Without going into all the technical details, it was a real beast of a

job! We have a far more technical infrastructure than we had in the past, and this time we began

by dismantling the server table which was built in place in 1998! We have a much more orga-

nized and cleaner room now.

Mike and I worked on Friday the 21st until 8:30 pm and on Saturday until noon. This weekend

was the culmination of several months of planning, and there is still some minor work to do.

Enjoy the pictures and the brief video!

A typical day for CMAFH Service Manager, Justin Nervis, starts with assessing the day’s repair schedule. If the individual jobs run smoothly, then the day will likely continue on that same trajectory. To that end, Justin makes sure that technicians have all of the materials needed before starting a job, and he coordinates with sales staff and customer service, so that everyone’s needs are being addressed.

With the department running smoothly, we became curious about opposite extremes and asked what both a “nightmare” day and a “dream” day might look like in the service department? Justin wasn’t ready to speculate, “I don’t know if that exists. I like to look at things in a positive light. There’s always good to be gained out of everything, even if it’s bad.”

Any new job usually comes with a few challenges. Having previously worked in a supervisory position at Casappa, and as a hydraulic technician at Perfection Servo, Justin went from focusing on mainly one component, a hydraulic pump, to working on the whole system. But that is not a problem as much as it is an observation, he says.

“My biggest challenge is actually getting to know and get comfortable with a new set of people. It takes time to learn who does what at a company,” he said.

In the hydraulics field since 2007, Justin started his career with a slightly different focus. He attended Lincoln Technical University where he completed his studies in Electronics, but that was a “long time ago,” he says, “and I am not an electronics wizard.”

On the job learning and hydraulics seminars got Justin interested in hydraulics exclusively. He continued his education through the International Fluid Power Society where he is certified in hydraulic repair.

For fun, Justin likes to spend time relaxing with friends and family and he enjoys watching sports, especially football and basketball. “I like the Bears, and I would like the Bulls, but they are so bad that I will usually pick someone else,” he said.

One thing you will notice immediately about Justin is his sense of calm. Justin credits that to meditation and life choices such as martial arts training in Wing Chun and JuJitsu.

Whenever he had personal problems to overcome, Justin found that learning to stay calm helped. As a kid, he had a slight stutter that he overcame. “My mom worked with me on that. I had to stop and think about what I wanted to say.”

Justin looks forward to spending the summer working on a ‘72 Impala restoration project currently underway in his garage. He has a motor rebuild ready to go in and even more improvements on the way.

Sounds like a fun and relaxing summer ahead! Welcome to CMAFH, Justin.

The nation’s leader in steel production, Indiana has half of the blast furnaces in the country, most of them located in Lake and Porter counties. The state produces 27% of all American made steel which amounts to about 25 million tons per year and 20,000 steelworkers handling the iron ore. It’s a huge industry!

It’s also an industry that Mark Onweller is well acquainted with. Since CMAFH 18 years ago, the steel mills have been part of his exclusive territory. Ringing the shores of Lake Michigan with multitudes of cavernous facilities and even larger campuses, steel mills are a world unto themselves.

Mark describes the largest and most powerful production facility that he calls on: #7 Blast Furnace located at ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor.

“#7 Blast Furnace is the largest in North Ameria. It is where the iron ore is made into molten iron. Molten iron is approximately 2700 degrees fahrenheit. The furnace is 14 stories tall with 14 ft thick refractory lined inner walls,” said Mark.

CMAFH provides hydraulics for the plant, and also some sensors so the operators can see their performance and chart progress. But it’s the hydraulics that do battle everyday in this world of extremes where the temps reach 2200 degrees fahrenheit.

ArcelorMittal purchases Rexroth, Sun and Hydac hydraulic components from CMAFH, as well as manifolds and custom projects through the Systems Group. Our products have a prov-en quality, performance and reliability that are essential for an operation of this magnitude. #7 Blast Furnace runs continously 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, and the hydraulics are always working.

“Once the ore is ready, a hydraulic rig swings in and drills a 4” hole in the wall and steam shoots out followed by a larger stream of molten iron. The iron drops into refractory brick-lined railcars that are positioned underneath, one after the next. At the next facility, various additives will go in and transform the iron into different steel products,” Mark explains.

And when the flow of iron has stopped, a mud gun goes in and seals the hole so that the process can be repeated. The Systems Group has a project coming up for a mud gun, if you would like to see one up close.

Congratulations to Eric Ziccard, this year’s winner in the CMAFH 2019-20 Fantasy Football league! We know what a big event this is to the team captains, so we caught up with Eric to see if he could shed some light on his winning methods.

Tell us about your lineup – strength and weaknesses. It’s starts at the Draft and I was fortunate to pick early…and knowing that the other 11 guys don’t know too much about football, so I was able to select some good players like Mahomes and MaCaffrey.

And did you use any strategy that you can share? Not really, I just made some roster moves along the way. I tried to trade some players during the season, but no one wanted to negotiate, they’re all babies!

When did you know you were going to win? Well, I won 6 in a row and then lost 4 straight because of injuries and player Bye weeks. I ran into Mike during my slide, he said “better luck next year”…nice guy that Mike.

Was is obvious or a nail biter situation? Some games were over by halftime, some weeks were very close so I just consumed more beer than usual.

What is your record for winning this league? 1st Championship! The 1st year I lost by 7 points in the final game, won’t forget it Mike!

Did you watch the Super Bowl? How was the half time show for you?Yes, it was a game worth watching, better than most years. Halftime was interesting, maybe less singing next year.

How will you spend your winnings? I have kids, that’s a silly question.

What do you plan to do with all of your free time now that league is over?Figure out how not to play next year but still keep MY Trophy.

Any final thoughts? I have to admit I enjoyed the season and hearing from the others congratulate me after the W!

Remembering Manny Aguilar CMA/Flodyne/Hydradyne lost a dear friend on New Year’s Eve 2019. Manny Aguilar, 45, our shipping and receiving coordinator, passed away just a few months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Manny was a vibrant, happy person who had many interests and occupations. His number one priority was being an amazing father to his daughter Destiny, 13.

“Manny often talked about his plans for Destiny and all of the activities he enrolled her in such as acting, dancing and piano. I got a sense that every single thing he did, he did for his daughter,” said Roxann Machac, who worked with Manny frequently on company projects.

Manny wore many hats, but his passion was for decorating and grand events! An extremely talented florist, Manny freelanced providing flowers and themed decor for weddings and events. He also helped with company picnics and parties by bringing in floral arrangements, making fruit trees and even tropical beverages. He was a very creative person; it seemed like there was nothing he could not do.

When Manny was diagnosed with cancer, he kept his cheerful attitude and took a leave of absense to spend time with his family. He didnt waste a moment. Manny’s Facebook page shows him traveling everywhere and having fun with his friends and family during his last months.

“Manny was a loving person, always in a good mood and always smiling and laughing. I would text him to see how he was feeling, and he would say he was fine and feeling very optimistic,” said co-worker and friend, Alma Mendoza. Manny never seemed to let a problem get in his way.

As a lasting tribute to our friend, John Hugunin commissioned an engraved vase of flowers for display in the front lobby of our Hanover Park office. And what could be more appropriate than flowers for the man who loved to see all of the beauty in life.
