TRIATHLETE OF THE MONTH SAM SANDUSKY

Family Information: Married to Lisa Sandusky (15 yr’s on 4/6/2011), with 3 beautiful girls: Carly 14, Alessa 12, and Kendal 8. Born and raised in Lakeland, FL to Becky & Harry Sandusky. If I didn’t own a Computer Company_ (real occupation), I would be a Wilderness Guide, leading hiking and camping expeditions in remote areas of the world. Plus, those guys wear cool hats like Indiana Jones._ (dream job) Passions outside Triathlon: My family and my faith are my primary passions, but I truly enjoy the leadership opportunities at my company. Leading a team of people to be their best every day brings huge satisfaction to my life. When not working, I love doing anything with Lisa and the kids; going to the beach, kayaking, swim-ming, reading, studying, eating, or just lying in our hammock. Key Race or goal for the season: The XTERRA Off-Road Triathlon is a series of races throughout the year in which the athlete can earn points that qualifies them for Nationals, which is held in Ogden, UT. in September. That would be cool. In XTERRA the swim is in a lake, river, or ocean, but the bike ride is on a mountain bike course, and the run is also off-road, often having the athlete run through black-diamond mountain bike trails. Athletic history before triathlon: In high school I was a swimmer, wrestled, played football, basketball, water-skied, and rode BMX bikes, but mostly goofed off and got bad grades. The activity I came in FIRST the most was getting into trouble. The sport I enjoyed the most was rugby, which I played during and after college. Triathlete for how many seasons: 9 or 10 years I think? But I’ve only been back in the sport since 2008. Currently my bike is a: Trek Madone for my road bike, and a Gary Fisher 29’r Hi-Fi Pro for my mountain bike. My dream bike is a: The Gary Fisher 29’r I just bought. (Since I already answered this question, my dream girl is Lisa, and I caught her!) Philosophies: Jesus comes first. Most all of the greatest advice ever written is in the good book. So I try to read and pray every day. (This is the one time plagiarism actually got me somewhere. Not so funny in high school). Biggest obstacle I overcame in becoming a triathlete: Me! And all of those silly excuses as to why we don’t ex-ercise or train regularly. What is your greatest triathlon moment or story? Finally making it to the podium in 2010 was pretty cool, but the journey getting there and overcoming all of the mental obstacles surprisingly outweighed the win’s. What inspires me are, people who stick with it, and train year round. The majority of athletes in this sport are very optimistic, and great to be around. The benefits of being in good physical shape are equally amazing. It makes everything in life easier. My favorite part about triathlon is…traveling to races with friends. It is such a great escape from the daily grind of life. Having the ―next race‖ on the calendar is like a built in coach, always reminding me to get out the door and run. Guilty Pleasures: Channel surfing. Philosophies/Quotes/Mottos: Don’t ask permission; ask for forgiveness later.

What drew you to Team Psych? Mark’s incessant recruiting.

Shimano R099, Carbon Women's Road Shoe

Used with light wear (less than 500 miles). Used

for only one triathlon season. Great shoes, just a

bit too small for me.

Push the pedals with carbon soles for extra

power! Shimano's SH-R099W Shoes put the

feathery material in the soles for light weight

and flex-free stiffness that pours all your power

into the pedals. These shoes are built with ana-

tomically curved lasts, stretch-resistant uppers

and 3-strap closures for fit and durability you'll

love.
