1. POSITION OBJECTIVES:

To provide young people with opportunities to socialise and develop knowledge and skills that promote mutual respect, healthy lifestyle choices, personal rights and responsibilities. Provide high quality community based recreation and life skills programs to young people living in the town and the surrounding communities and develop partnerships with other youth services to enhance program delivery.

2. KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

OUTCOME: Youth Support

Actively promote the strategies for positive lifestyle management/protective behaviours.

Assist young people to link with school, alternative training or work opportunities and maintain their involvement.

Encourage participation, safety and security for young people and the wider community in public spaces.

Reduce the overall level of risk young people experience.

OUTCOME: Recreation & Life Skills Programs

To provide community based recreation and life skills programs including: school holiday programs, re-engagement programs, daily term programs and special events for young people.

Assist young people to increase their life skills to help them deal with or prevent crisis.

Develop and deliver recreational activities, excursions and other outreach opportunities programs across a range of time slots including evenings and weekends.

Build supportive & inclusive relationships through community involvement between young people, community, business and government agencies.

Seek other agencies/services in town to partner with to provide programs and support.

Support the Manager Community Development in applying for funding to enhance variety of programs delivered.

OUTCOME: Partnerships

Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with external agencies to support program delivery.

Treat all clients with professionalism and dignity.

Promptly attend to service related enquiries in a courteous and effective manner.

Take initiative to attend to existing or potential customer needs.

OUTCOME: Information and Promotion

Liaise with stakeholders to provide information about and promotion of the service.

Develop culturally appropriate promotions about the service.

Ensure strong community awareness of the service, especially targeting young people and their families.

Maintain effective referral systems with community organisations and government agencies. OUTCOME: Administration

Support the Manager Community Development in the maintenance of appropriate systems, forms and records in respect to referrals.

Maintain appropriate standards of confidentiality and ensure compliance with all legislative requirements.

Assist with the delivery of community events and school holiday programs as part of the wider scope of the Community Development Team.

Assist with the development and implementation of youth centre policies and procedures for staff and young people.

Assist with the completion of all requisite paperwork and reports correctly and within specified deadlines.

OUTCOME: HUMAN RESOURCES & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

Develop and maintain a sense of commitment, cohesion and teamwork with the members of the Community Development Team creating a great place to work.

Manage, support and supervise community volunteers including all administrative requirements.

Actively participate in personal development activities, such as the development of work plans, identifying training and development needs and the staff performance review process.

Develop and improve unit staff performance/potential and multi-skilling aiming for a more effective team.

Assist with human resource functions, such as recruitment, staff development, inductions, training coaching and mentoring as directed by the Manager

Comply with all statutory obligations, including the Local Government Act, Equal; Employment Opportunity (EEO), Organisational Risk Management and Code of Conduct.

Act to ensure the working environment is free from workplace hazards and comply with relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation and corporate OHS policies and procedures.

Ensure that incidents, injuries, hazardous conditions, near misses are properly and promptly reported.

Seek guidance for all new or modified work practices to ensure safety is a high priority consideration.

5. REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB (SELECTION CRITERIA)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Experience in providing community development and recreation programs and services.

Experience in working with at risk young people.

High level of interpersonal skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; including report writing and presentation.

Demonstrated problem solving ability.

Demonstrated planning, organisational and time management skills.

Experience in information technology.

Supervisory experience.

Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends and school holidays.

Knowledge of issues facing Indigenous young people in remote areas.

Research and report writing skills. Qualifications and/or Training:

A Department of Justice Security Clearance will be required prior to commencement.

Cert IV in Youth Work or work towards the completion of a relevant qualification or demonstrated experience in Youth Work.

Current open ‘C’ (manual) drivers licence.
