What is the difference between offensive strategies and defensive strategies associated with team handball? How does the game of team handball compare to the game of hockey? Slide 3 HISTORY Team handball is an Olympic sport gaining popularity in recreational and school Physical Education classes. Participants and spectators alike enjoy the fast continuous play, using their natural athletic skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching. Team Handball had its origins in Europe in the late 1920s. A men's team Handball competition was included in the Munich Olympics in 1972, followed by the inclusion of women's competition in the 1976 Games in Montreal. Slide 4 EQUIPMENT GoalWall mat to make a goal Handball Cones to mark boundaries Hula Hoops for goal Poly Spots Tape to mark a goal Slide 5 SAFETY Team Handball players need to wear proper athletic shoes and clothing. Players need to be aware of all surroundings making sure to not come into contact with another player. Make sure Team Handball court is free of debris. Practice proper communication and good listening. Slide 6 HOW TO PLAY There are 6 court players and 1 goalie. Game begins with a center throw-off, aka, throw-on determined by a coin toss. Regulation game length is 2-30 minute halves. A player scores by shooting the ball into a goal. Each goal is worth 1 point. Change of possession every time a team scores. Team with the most points wins when time expires. Slide 7 HOW TO PLAY A MODIFIED GAME Cant hold ball for more than 10 seconds. Player can take 3 steps after catching the ball and then must pass to a teammate. Cant kick ball with their feet. Keep arms length distance between you and other team. Must not go in goal area. Slide 8 TEAM HANDBALL COURT Penalty Shot/Free throw Goal-area line Free Throw - A throw given to the other team when they are in violation of a rule of the game Penalty Line - Line for free throw after a major penalty, creates one-on-one with goalie. Goal Area Line- Arc (usually 6m out) around goal that only the goalie can be in. Players may jump into area to shoot, provided they shoot before landing. Slide 9 TYPES OF PASSES BASEBALL PASSES SIDEARM PASS A one armed overhand pass Ball is thrown from the side to avoid defender HANDOFF PASS Similar to quarterback handing ball off to a running back in football. Receiver forms a pocket for the ball ROLLER PASS The ball is simply rolled along the floor to a teammate Slide 10 PASSING CUES Throwing the ball to another player to advance the ball down the court. 1.Side to the target 2.Step with opposite foot 3. Twist 4. Throw Baseball pass-6 th grade assessment Slide 11 SHOOTING 7 TH Grade assessment A scoring attempt made when a player releases a shot toward the goal. DEFENDING High School assessment Trying to stop the other team from scoring using your body. Slide 12 SHOOTING CUES 7 th assessment 1. Grip ball so it rests in palm 2. Reach back and above shoulder 3. Snap wrist 4. Release the shot Slide 13 DEFENDING CUES High School assessment 1. Eyes on the ball or the attacker 2. Hands up 3. Place body between the attacker and the goal DEFENDER Slide 14 CATCHING 8 th grade assessment Using hands and arms to grab the ball. In handball we pass and catch the ball with teammates to move closer to the goal and score a point. Slide 15 CATCHING CUES 8 th grade assessment 1.Elbows bent 2.Reach with hands 3.Eyes track the ball 4.Grab with hands Slide 16 GOAL When the ball crosses the goal line inside the goal. A goal may be scored from any throw. All goals are worth one point. Putting the ball back into play after it has crossed one of the sidelines. Feet must be outside of sideline and one or two hands used to throw. THROW IN Slide 17 TYPES OF SHOTS POSITIONS GOALIE COURT PLAYER SET SHOT A simple shot thrown from a standing still position. This is the type of shot used during penalty shots. PENALTY SHOT One on one with the goalie. The shooter must stand with both feet behind the penalty line and keep one foot stationary during the shot. Member of the handball team actually playing on the court, except the goalie.
