Writing #1 & 2 Writing with Complex SentencesLesson Introduction:
One of the exciting things about writing is that there are days when progress is slow- and days when progress is rapid! I remember when I put together my baby’s nursery- there were days where nothing seemed to be coming together... but then I’d have a day where all of a sudden we had a fully built crib and curtains hung! This will take some work, but you can do it!
Lesson:You have been working on making your writing Clear and Correct. It is also powerful to know how to make your sentences more complex. One way to lift the level of your sentence complexity is to rewrite patches of your writing so that your sentences are more sophisticated! You can do this in TWO different ways.
1. Use different types of sentences so your writing does not become choppy and robotic.
2. Use different lengths of sentences (some short, some long) so your writing is rhythmic. You can use punctuation to do this.
Check this out:
Here is an example. Read the first version (light blue). Then see how the writer revised (green), to make the sentences more COMPLEX.
This is how Steven worked on using punctuation to enhance his writing:
Assignment:1. Go into one of your drafted chapters. Read it carefully. Fill in this chart to see what kind of
sentences you are using (as you read, place a tally mark in the correct column).
Exclamatory ! Interrogative ? Imperative/Declarative .
2. Fill this in:
I could have more ______________________________________________ types of sentences.
3. Work to revise a section of your writing so you have more of a variety of sentence types.
4. Now find a place in your writing where you have too many short sentences, OR too many long sentences. Choose a sentence to make longer, or choose a sentence to make shorter. Continue using these strategies to revise the rest of your work.
