YHWH kept his wordSarrha gives birth to a child for Abraham

Babies, babies, babies. The bundle of joy that fills our lives with happiness before they get tattooed, have strange hobbies and chum with friends of ill repute before leaving the house at 40. From a cultural standpoint, being barren was seen as a curse among the eastern societies. Though Sarah was beautiful and desired by men, not having a child would have affected her emotionally. Hence her laughing, in chapter 18, when the meeting with YHWH, the messengers and Abraham was gearing down after overhearing their discussions with their meal. Also, her rival and handmaid Hagar would have felt elevated in the tent of Abraham for birthing Ishmael, which would have made things very uncomfortable for her. The birth of her son was fully sanctioned by YHWH Elohim and he made good on His promise to her. So then, why at this point in her life?

• More mature at this moment in her life

• Ishmael is at a stable age

• To show the Power of YHWH Elohim in the lives of those who choose to follow his path

Bereshit/Genesis 21: 3 - 7

(Gen 21: 3 - 7 Koren Pub) 3And Avraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sara bore to him, Yiżĥaq. 4And Avraham circumcised his son Yiżĥaq being eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5And Avraham was a hundred years old, when his son Yiżĥaq was born to him. 6And Sara said, God has made laughter for me, so that all that hear will laugh with me. 7And she said, Who would have said to Avraham, that Sara should give children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age. YHWH made me laughThe child is given a name

Abraham gives his son a name. When naming a child it is important to give a name that sets him/her up for success:

The naming of a child is very importantNation Online February 2, 2014

A name is a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place or thing is know.

Names are very important. It tells a story of who we are, what we shall be and become. Therefore as parents when naming our children we should think very carefully before naming our children, how the name will impact on our children as they grow up, especially in this world of inequality. Names which are negative and have negative connotations will not inspire a child to develop positively or have a good outcome in life. The child will not grow to make a positive contribution in his/her community.

I have been inspired to write this piece because of an encounter I had in the run up to the New Year 2014. I was enraged inside when introduced to a child called “Failure”, yes many of you may be laughing at this stage, thinking this is a joke! No, it is not a joke, a child’s real name. This is both serious and sad to think a mother or the parents can name her first born child ‘Failure”. Her other children have lovely and positive names such as Elisha and Christina. I wonder what was going on in their mind at the time of naming their innocent and beautiful baby girl.

Who on earth names a child Failure, Death, Trouble, Difficult, Pay me, Endure, Urinate, and Graveyard? What chance do these innocent children have in life, particularly in a world which is so fierce, scrutinises and very competitive, socially and economically?

YHWH made me laughThe child is given a name

Abraham then proceeded, on the eight day of the child’s birth, to circumcise Isaac as per the details of the covenant between himself and YHWH Elohim:

• (Gen 17:1-10 Brenton) 1And Abram was ninety-nine years old, and the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am thy God, be well-pleasing before me, and be blameless. 2And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and I will multiply thee exceedingly. 3And Abram fell upon his face, and God spoke to him, saying, 4And I, behold! my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of a multitude of nations. 5And thy name shall no more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraam, for I have made thee a father of many nations. 6And I will increase thee very exceedingly, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7And I will establish my covenant between thee and thy seed after thee, to their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be thy God, and the God of thy seed after thee. 8And I will give to thee and to thy seed after thee the land wherein thou sojournest, even all the land of Chanaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be to them a God. 9And God said to Abraam, Thou also shalt fully keep my covenant, thou and thy seed after thee for their generations. 10And this is the covenant which thou shalt fully keep between me and you, and between thy seed after thee for their generations; every male of you shall be circumcised.

Circumcision is the physical reminder of the ‘Covenant’ between YHWH Elohim and Abraham. It is an everlasting ‘Covenant’ inherited by each successive generation of Abraham seed. Moses, The Anointed One, Paul or anyone else for that matter, cannotannul this ‘Covenant’. Also, it does not matter how many times the Anointed One “dies for our sins”, as he stated:

• (Mat 5:17-20 KJV) 17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Page 18: Team D Songs of Praise to Yah · 2019. 6. 21. · Team D Bible Study Songs of Praise Sing Praises Sing ( Psalm 47 ) Clap your hands, all you nations Shout to Yah with a voice of exaltation

YHWH made me laughThe child is given a name

Isaac is the ‘First Born’ of this ‘Covenant’, which gives him a unique status apart form the other seed born to Abraham. The Anointed One is the ‘First Born’ of the resurrection of the dead into the Kingdom of Heaven, which also gives him a unique status, but not to annul the ‘Covenant’. Isaac was promised to Abraham and Sarah even before Ishmael got into the picture:

• (Gen 15:1-6 Brenton) 1And after these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram, I shield thee, thy reward shall be very great. 2And Abram said, Master and Lord, what wilt thou give me? whereas I am departing without a child, but the son of Masekmy home-born female slave, this Eliezer of Damascus is mine heir. 3And Abram said, I am grieved since thou hast given me no seed, but my home-born servant shall succeed me. 4And immediately there was a voice of the Lord to him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come out of thee shall be thine heir. 5And he brought him out and said to him, Look up now to heaven, and count the stars, if thou shalt be able to number them fully, and he said, Thus shall thy seed be. 6And Abram believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.

Thus, Abraham carried out the circumcision on his first born son, of the covenant, on the eight day and Isaac fulfills the role as his heir. The act of circumcision on Isaac, by Abraham his father, fulfillsthe covenant with YHWH. Thus, in the same manner the Anointed One has to fulfill them without destroying established covenants that are in place. Sarah is filled with joy as she is now a mother. This laughter is the kind that occurs when something beyond ones capabilities happens, and leaves you awestruck. Abraham and Sarah are considered old, and birth for Sarah, at least, seems impossible. That is how our Wonderful Elohim works so that there is no denying his authority.

Not AgainProblems in Abraham’s tent

Celebration time in the tent of Abraham. The son of promise is now weaned and being presented to all that are invited. The ‘fatted calf’ and the choice sheep and goats would have been slaughtered for such a monumental moment. A miracle of heavenly proportions has been worked by YHWH Elohim by making a barren womb fruitful at an advanced age. From celebration, things turned quickly into discontent. An old problem lingered in Abraham’s tent. The son of ‘the other woman’, also a seed of Abraham, an older son, but not the chosen one. Sarah looked over and determined Ishmael’s behavior, with his brother Isaac, was not pleasing whether he was sporting or mocking his younger brother at this auspicious occasion:

• Sporting?/mocking (ק 6711(מצח

Most commentary on Ishmael’s behaviour points you to the following discussions on Israel and prophecy:

– The Palestinians are of the seed of Ishmael and is trying to overthrow the birth-rite and become the son of prominence

– Islam is connected Ismael and the Arabic people are his seed

– This moment, Ismael mocking Isaac, marks the beginning of the persecution (The 400year prophecy spoken to Abraham, which cumulates with the exodus from Egypt.

– (Gen 15:13 Brenton) 13And it was said to Abram, Thou shalt surely know that thy seed shall be a sojourner in a land not their won, and they shall enslave them, and afflict them, and humble them four hundred years.

For a moment, lets assume that Ishmael was not mocking Isaac, his younger brother, but rather building up a relationship with him. Sarah concern would be even more valid seeing that Ishmael lived in his father’s tent without much problems, over his lifetime, up to that moment. Ishmael being close to Isaac can complicate the transition of the birth rite once Abraham goes the way of his ancestors.

Ishmael is in the house of his father, and would be thought/instructed in the ways of YHWH Elohim. Though the apple does fall far from the tree (1 Sam. 8: 1 – 3), this apple was very close to his father and would have been building a bond with his younger brother. Given at times the nature of the internet, a resources to be referenced that gives some insight into this situation is no longer available via direct link:

Not AgainProblems in Abraham’s tent: The Birth-rite

Sarah is protecting her future generations interest and reducing the complication of the birth-rite being passed to her son. Not making the same misstep twice. The birthright is also connected to YHWHbecoming the Elohim of Israel and being eternally tied to this nation:

– (Isa 29:20-22 Brenton) 20The lawless man has come to nought, and the proud man has perished, and they that

transgress mischievously have been utterly destroyed: 21and they that cause men to sin by a word: and men shall

make all that reprove in the gates an offence, because they have unjustly turned aside the righteous. 22Therefore thus

saith the Lord concerning the house of Jacob, whom he set apart from Abraam, Jacob shall not now be ashamed,

neither shall he now change countenance. (different read in the MT)

– (Psa 105/104:7-10 MT/LXX) 7He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 8He has remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded for a thousand generation: 9which he established as a covenant to Abraam, and he remembered his oath to Isaac. 10And he established it to Jacob for an ordinance, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant;

– (Psa 135/134: 4 MT/LXX) 4For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.

With YHWH as the all encompassing Authority over Israel, they stand head over heals above every other nation,

not in supremacy but in righteousness, provided they obey Him:

– (Prov 14:32-34 LXXE) 32The ungodly shall be driven away in his wickedness: but he who is secure in his own

holiness is just. 33There is wisdom in the good heart of a man: but in the heart of fools it is not discerned.34Righteousness exalts a nation: but sins diminish tribes.

– (Prov 14:32-34 KJV) 32The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his

death. 33Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is

made known. 34Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Not AgainProblems in Abraham’s tent: The Birth-rite

Yah’s portion is still Israel, and Abraham is His friend whom He made a covenant with. With Isaac, the birth-

rite includes the covenant apart from the land for Abraham’s seed. Ishmael, though a first born, was

conceived with man’s effort outside of Yah’s intensions. If Isaac and Ishmael is allowed to grow together, and

develop a close relationship, the transition of the birth-rite would become complex. Take Jacob and Esau as an

example.

Why so many Ishmaels

Beyond the Torah, the name Ishmael appears among the generations of Jacob in other passages of the bible:

• Ishmael, a treacherous royal son of Nethaniah

o He was a grandson of Elishama (Jeremiah 40:8; 40:15)

o He was an ally of the Ammonite King Baalis, his co-conspirator (Jeremiah 40:14).

o With a hit team of ten men, he assassinated the foreign-installed governor of Judah, Gedaliah (son of

Ahikam) at a dinner party. This occured at the time of King Nebuchadnezzar (see account: 2 Kings

25:22-26; Jeremiah 40:7-41:16).

o He also killed “the Jews and the Chaldees that were with him [Gedaliah] at Mizpah” (2 Kings 25:25).

He carried off many captives, “and departed to go over to the Ammonites” (Jeremiah 41:10).

o When Johanan and the army officers with him heard about Ishmael’s crimes, they went to stop him

and caught up with him at the pool in Gibeon. Ismael escaped among the Ammonites (Jeremiah 41:11-

12), and the captives were rescued.

Not AgainProblems in Abraham’s tent: The Birth-rite

Why so many Ishmaels

• Ishmael, a son of Azel

o He was a descendant of Prince Jonathan, son of King Saul (1 Chronicles 8:38).

• Ishmael, a judge and father of Zebadiah

o He was appointed by King Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 19:11).

• Captain Ishmael, a son of Jehohanan

o 2 Chronicles 23:1 He was a captain in the army who assisted the High Priest Jehoiada in defeating the

evil Queen Athaliah (daughter of Ahab and Jezebel), so that Joash (the rightful heir to the throne)

could be made Judah's king.

• Ishmael, a son of Pashur

o He was a priest and father. In defiance of God’s will, he married a pagan wife after the Babylonian

Exile (Ezra 10:22).

With that many Ishmaels among the house of Israel, good or bad in nature, a name is given to a child to honor

an ancestor that was well favoured. Try this with the name of Esau, Jacob’s brother and see what you are

presented with.

The Bond and Free WomanA letter of explanation

Ishmael was the first born of the bondwoman, whereas Isaac was the first born of the free woman. Ishmael is of the seed of Abraham, through the bondwoman, and was circumcised after the covenant is established. Isaac was the first born, through the free woman, of the covenant and circumcised eight days as per this covenant. Ishmael was cast out of the tent of Abraham, but not abandoned. Isaac remained in the tent of his father and inherited the birth-rite and everything associated with it. From a ‘New Testament context’, Paul, in his epistle of Galatians 4, uses this moment in Abraham life to highlight a point regarding new believers who were not of the seed of Abraham. Any matter arising out of Paul’s epistles is a difficult issue to discuss because of the emotional and doctrinal connection people who identify as Christian has to these writings. Paul’s audience was primarily Gentile (Genesis 17 part 1 study) who would be clueless to the contents of the scriptures, and the way of life, he was revealing to them:

– (Rom 11:12-13 KJV) 12Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles;

how much more their fulness? 13For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

– (Eph 3:1-2 KJV) 1For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2If ye have heard of the dispensation of the gr

ace of God which is given me to you-ward:

– (Gal 2:7 KJV) 7But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of

the circumcision was unto Peter;

– (2Pe 3:15-16) 15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also accordi

ng to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in

which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the oth

er scriptures, unto their own destruction.

– (1Ti 2:7 KJV) 7Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the

Gentiles in faith and verity.

The Bond and Free WomanA letter of explanation

A quick reminder about Sarah and Haggar the free verses the bond woman:

– Haggar was given to Sarah by the Pharaoh after being part of his household.

– Hagar was Egyptian of the descendants of Cham, whereas, Sarah was a descendant of the house of Shem

– For Sarah to suggest Hagar be a surrogate on her behalf, she had to be have become a close confidant and trusted by Sarah.

– Ishmael is technically Sarah’s child based on the norms of the people.

Was Paul using this incident to make a comparison between Hebrew and Gentiles as per the Covenant with Abraham, the Anointed One’s death and resurrection, and how this group fits into this reality? Paul’s ministry started with Gentiles:

– (Act 15:1-3 KJV) 1And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses (Please note they did not say “after the manner of Abraham”. Immediately what should come to mind is the doctrine of men), ye cannot be saved. 2When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. 3And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

The Bond and Free WomanA letter of explanation

Paul is making a comparison, using this instance with Sarah and Hagar, to those who are ‘Not of the seed’ can be partakers with the seed. Paul is doing what is termed Midrash:

• What Is Midrash? - ( מדרש) is an interpretive act, seeking the answers to religious questions (both practical and theological) by plumbing the meaning of the words of the Torah. (In the Bible, the root d-r-sh [ [ דרש is used to mean inquiring into any matter, including occasionally to seek out God’s word.) Midrash responds to contemporary problems and crafts new stories, making connections between new Jewish realities and the unchanging biblical text. https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/midrash-101/

• Abstract excerpt - The Psalms are the most cited portions of Scripture in the New Testament. This paper investigates Paul’s use of the Psalms and seeks to answer the concern that his citation strategy is both arbitrary and self-serving. Inasmuch as it has sometimes been concluded that Paul, in midrashic fashion, forced his citations to say something contrary to a more natural reading. This paper suggests that Paul uses citation criteria very carefully.(PAUL’S USE OF THE PSALMS. BEYOND MIDRASH, JOHN K.STAFFORD, University of Manitoba, 2013 https://www.degruyter.com/downloadpdf/j/perc.2013.11.issue-2/perc-2013-0011/perc-2013-0011.pdf)

Also, he is using letters in like manner as Jeremiah (Jer 29: 1 MT/Jer 36: 1 LXX) to the Gentiles as he addresses issues that has arisen.

The Bond and Free WomanA letter of explanation

Paul may have never stopped being a pharisee:

• (Act 23:6 KJV) 6But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men andbrethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. (Please read the entire chapter in context)

• (Php 3:5 KJV) 5Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; (Please read the entire chapter in context)

Paul’s schooling in phariseesism is understood to be “at the feet of Gamaliel” who is a revered sage within Judaism and one of his mentors:

• (Act 22:3 KJV) 3I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

His training under Gamaliel transitioned into his approach, with primarily Gentiles, and others he was giving leadership support to. Thus, him using this instance with the free and the bond is to reconcile issues being encountered with those who have aligned themselves to him and choosing the path he is now living.

The Bond and Free WomanA letter of explanation

Thus Paul, is using the midrash tradition to explain to the Gentiles, using Sarah and Hagar, two women who were brought together through unique circumstances to let this audience know where they stand as per the ‘law’, ‘The Anointed One’ and ‘covenant’ in relation to the ‘home born seed’. The Gentiles is being compared to the ‘bond woman’s’ seed who was exiled from Abraham’s tent of the flesh, whereas Israel is compared to the ‘free woman’ seed remaining in the tent and enjoying the benefits of this status through the son of promise. Given this approach, it is easy to draw assumptions which may be out of context of the letter written by Paul to the Galatians.

My SonA father’s love for his son(s)

Is there, or was there, doubt in Abraham’s spirit concerning a son through his wife Sarah after such a long time being childless. Ishmael is a lad in his father’s tent and he deeply loves him. From all indications, Ishmael is not an ill mannered boy. Ishmael is a reminder of a past mistake made by all adult parties. A plan that was conceived by Sarah herself, offering her handmaid to Abraham to ‘bear seed’ in her stead for him. A handmaiden that was bestowed to Sarah because of the situation with the Pharaoh of Egypt. Now Abraham is faced with a tough situation not unlike going up against five kings to rescue his nephew Lot. He is asked, by his wife, to put his son and the handmaiden out of his tent. A son that he has love for. Even Eliazer, his chief servant, Abraham had love for as if he was from his loins. Because of Abraham’s heart, he pleaded for the potential righteous in Sodom and his feeling towards this son would be no different. Very hard decision to make, given the dependence of a woman and child on a man of that society. Ishmael has the love of his father and it shows with Abraham’s troubled demeanor. All is not lost and for good reason. Abraham is given assurance about his son Ishmael from Yah:

Bereshit/Genesis 21: 14 - 16

(Gen 21: 14 - 16 Koren Pub) 14And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Be᾽er-sheva. 15And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. (MT)

(Gen 21: 14 - 16 Brenton) 14And Abraam rose up in the morning and took loaves and a skin of water, and gave them to Agar, and he put the child on her shoulder, and sent her away, and she having departed wandered in the wilderness near the well of the oath. 15And the water failed out of the skin, and she cast the child under a fir tree. 16And she departed and sat down opposite him at a distance, as it were a bow-shot, for she said, Surely I cannot see the death of my child: and she sat opposite him, and the child cried aloud and wept. SorrowCasted out

Was it fair for Ishmael to be cast out of his father’s tent? With Adam and Eve it was understandable for them being cast out of the garden because of disobedience as they entertained the words of the Serpent. Abraham was a hedge of protection for Hagar and Ishmael. Everyone at this moment would experience sorrow. Hagar is given some provision. But wait! Abraham only gives her a skin of water and bread? Not even a mule to head back to Egypt? Something is definitely not right here with Abraham’s actions towards the cast out:

Excerpt - The Bondwoman and Her SonAnd so, as Sarah had demanded, Hagar and Ishmael were cast out of the household and sent into the wilderness (actually, Abraham's intent was most likely for them to make it to the nearest town, but they appear to have lost their way.) This seems harsh to us at first glance, yet it was God's command to Abraham that he heed Sarah's words, which tells us that there is something God understands about this situation that we might not understand, yet Sarah did. But Abraham struggled with it, so God relieved Abraham's fears for his son Ishmael by letting him know that Ishmael would survive and even become a great nation. http://mindfulofthelord.blogspot.com/2011/07/bondwoman-and-her-son.html

Abraham would have been strengthened by the ‘WORD” of YHWH Elohim concerning his son Ishmael. He, Ishmael, would also become a nation because of the covenant concerning all of Abraham’s seed. He has evidence of Yah’s word in his son Isaac, who was born to him. But the situation is still an overwhelming one for any man to manage.

SorrowCasted out

Hagar had to be a strong woman to carry Ishmael on her shoulder. At this moment Ishmael is 14yrs old as his father sired him when he was 86yrs (Gen 16: 16), and his brother Isaac being birthed at Abraham’s 100yrs. They both made it into the wilderness and everything quickly devolve for them. Food ran out, Hagar was embittered and hopeless and Ishmael wept. From a comfy tent to now a harsh wilderness. Sorrow becomes them.
