900 BC – 1500 AD: INDIGENOUS PEOPLE• Similar to North America, Brazil was originally inhabited by

tribes of indigenous people, called the Tupi or Tupinamba

• Tribes spoke a common language but were constantly at war with other tribes; practice of cannibalistic rituals on captured enemies occurred

• Around 1MM Tupi existed around 1500 when the Portuguese began settling

• Mostly wiped out or assimilated, a few reservations of Tupi still exist

• In 1494, Treaty of Tordesillas divided the new world with arbitrary line: west of the line was Spain’s, east was Portugal’s; Portugal unknowingly ended up with much of Brazilian coast

• In 1500, Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal

• Brazil declared its independence from Portugal and became the Empire of Brazil

• Pedro I became Emperor of Brazil; many rebellions followed

• Post-1964 policies spurred external trade faster than economy – significant growth in exports and imports

• Considerable modernization in industrial sector

• Semi-process manufactured exports - % of total exports

• 1963: 5%; 1974: 29%
