TEAM 2: SUPERHEROES, A LITTLE HISTORY The mythologies of many ancient civilizations feature pantheons of gods and goddesses with superhuman powers, as well as demigods like Hercules and heroes such as Perseus. Later, folkloric heroes such as Robin Hood (on the left) had superhero conventions such as (telles que) secret identities. Stories like Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, and Zorro all influenced superhero characters. Comic strip characters like Dick Tracy (1931) and The Phantom (1936) catapulted the idea of superheroes and comic books into modern day media. THE SEVEN MOST INFLUENTIAL SUPER-HEROES The first Action Comics was published in 1938: it was a man with a red cape and blue costume who was strong enough to lift an automobile over his head. Superman had arrived and become the first comic-book character to have powers much greater than any human being. Batman (1939) was the first non-super superhero. His only powers came from his self-developed physique and trained detective mind. He supplemented his natural abilities with gadgets. Two years later, the first super heroine was introduced. Wonder Woman started as the Justice League Society secretary, but she became as popular as Superman and Batman. Beautiful, strong and intelligent, Wonder Woman acquired her powers from gods and goddesses, and she has a magic, golden lasso. Spider-Man, created by Stan Lee, first appeared in the August 1962 issue of Amazing Fantasy. Spider-Man is perhaps the most truly original superhero of the 1960s. His personal problems - love, financial, and family - made him unique among superheroes Captain America is the most famous creation of the Joe Simon [writer] - Jack Kirby [artist] comic-book team. His adventures started in March 1941. He symbolized American values during World War II (1939-1945) Captain Marvel, originally appeared in February 1940. He is the best selling superhero comic of all time. Captain Marvel is the classic example of American happiness and eternal optimism. Plastic Man was created in August 1941. Plastic Man has been a favourite character of many comic book creators. His adventures are funny and different from the serious crime fighters. A.
