Travelin the Sky
Flying was once a dream. For a long time, people had wanted to be
up in the sky. They tried many ways. But nothing worked. And then,
227 years ago, things changed on one September day. Two brothers
(Joseph Michel Montgolfier (1740-1810) and Jacques Etienne
Montgolfier (1745-1799) from France made a very large balloon with
paper and cloth. To make the balloonfloat, they built a fire inside a
basket and hung the basket below the balloon. They thought hot air from the fire would be
light enough to hoist the balloon. They were right! Their hot air balloon traveled about 2
miles. It was in the sky for eight minutes. Nobody boarded for the first ride because they
thoughtthe firsttravel might be dangerous andbumpy. So, the balloon took off with its first
passengers, a duck, a rooster, and a sheep. They thought everything about taking off the

balloon but they did not take landing into consideration. There was no runway. The balloon
went up and disappeared. Then, they found it in the middle of a valley which was completely
offt
e beaten track. Contrary to expectations, the passengers of the balloon were alive. Two
months later, the same two brothers from France set off their hot air balloon again. This time,
they had two people inside the basket. The flight lasted 25 minutes. It also landed safely. That
was the first time men were in the sky
