W HY W ASH YOUR HANDS

Careful handwashing is one of the best ways to stop germs from spreading.

Here are some ways to share the message:

Ask the children to list all the things that they do with their hands: clap, paint, dig in the

garden, stroke pets, carry food to their mouth etc. Hands are very busy and must be

washed with soap and water to stop germs spreading

Use a magnifying glass so they can look at their hands. Remind them that dirt and

germs can hide in the lines, cracks and wrinkles. They might see the dirt but they won’t

see germs – they are too small.

Some germs can stay alive on our hands for up to three hours and in that time they canbe spread to all the things we touch – including food and other people. Talk about when

we should wash our hands throughout the day. The children could make a list or do

some artwork for display in the classroom:

Important times to wash your hands are:

Before

• Preparing food

• Eating

After• Going to the toilet

• Coughing or sneezing – especially if you are ill

• Handling or stroking pets and other animals

• Touching rubbish or bins

• Gardening – even if you wear gloves

Familiarise yourself with the ‘Best Practice’ handwashing technique.

i.e. using soap and water with singing ‘Happy Birthday to You’ through twice as a guide

for timing

Ensure there are good handwashing facilities available for the children – warm water,

soap and hand drying.

Familiarise yourself with the use of the Handwashing Cabinet. This helps children see

how easy it is to leave bacteria on their hands as the lotion glows under UV light and so

highlights areas missed with a poor handwashing technique.

HANDWASHING TECHNIQUE

We all think we know how to wash our hands but many of us don’t do it properly. It’s all

about good technique and time. Simply rinsing your hands in cold water is not effective

- always use warm water and soap. Also, germs spread much faster from wet hands and

so it is important to dry your hands after washing them.


• First wet your hands and then apply the soap.

• Rub hands palm to palm

• Wash the back of each hand

• In between the fingers – rub hands together with fingers interlaced.

• Backs of the fingers - rub fingers of your left hand in the palm of your right hand,and vice versa

• Thumbs - rotate each thumb in the palm of the other hand

• Tips of fingers – rub your right fingers in your left palm and then vice versa

• Wrists – don’t forget to wash your wrists

• Dry your hands thoroughly

It should take around twenty seconds to wash your hands – about the time required to

sing ‘Happy Birthday to You’ through twice.

Good quality handwashing is about good technique and doing it for long enough.

Sing ‘Happy Birthday To You’ twice = 20 seconds.

USING THE HANDWASHING CABINET

The Handwashing Cabinet is designed to help children visualise germs they may have

missed when not washing their hands properly by highlighting the areas missed with

fluorescent lotion.

The cabinet must be placed on a level secure surface, preferable in a shaded or darker

area (sunlight diffuses the result). DO NOT place on a draining board or sink. For

convenience it is best to place the cabinet near to handwashing facilities.

1. Pump one very small squirt of the lotion (Glitterbug) onto the palm of each child’s

hand. Please note that using too much lotion makes it difficult to wash off and is

wasteful - the lotion is expensive.

2. Ensure each child rubs the lotion all over their hands, paying particular attention to

the crevices, between their fingers and around their wrists.

3. Ask the children to wash their hands the way they usually do.

4. Switch on the cabinet – it does not need to warm up.5. Ask the children to place their hands inside the cabinet. Any remaining lotion will

shine blue (fluoresce) under the UV lamp and show the areas that they missed when

they washed their hands.

6. Explain and demonstrate the correct handwashing technique.

7. Now ask the children to rewash their hands using the correct technique.

8. Ask the children to put their hands back into the cabinet – if no lotion remains then

a good handwash has been achieved.

9. It a child has still not correctly washed their hands it is important to send them back

to wash them again, until all the lotion is removed.

10.Complete a certificate for each child

After Use

Please ensure that all the resources provided (spare tube, Glitterbug potion, instruction

sheet etc) are replaced in the bag. This resource will be going directly to another

recipient so please return it in the condition you would wish to receive it.

Spare Tub e

The tube is located behind the electrical panel inside the top of the cabinet and is fitted

in ‘rotor bi-pin’ holders. There is a spare light tube supplied in the cabinet bag. Pleaseensure this is stored carefully while the cabinet is in use.

To change the tube:

• Unplug the cabinet.

• Remove the old tube – rotate through one-quarter turn and push out of the holders,

away from the panel.

• Fit the new tube – hold the tube with the pins horizontal and insert the pins into the

holders from the rear (one end first then the other).

• Make sure both ends are fully home.

• Then rotate the lamp through one-quarter turn until it clicks into position.

Please note that it is possible to over-rotate the lamp, in which case it will not work. If this happens simply rotate the lamp one more click.
