Lesson GoalCreate a persuasive advertisement for a class fieldtrip that will assist students in developing the skills to meet the following Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1; 5.4; 5.6
Common Core Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1 Write opinion pieces on topics
or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others
Learning ObjectiveThe student will be able to create a persuasive fieldtrip advertisement, using the Kerpoof website, that incorporates the use of effective word(s), phrase(s), and image(s) that will appeal to fellow 5th grade students.
Rationale Students explore effective persuasive writing
practices through use of exemplary advertisements.
Students employ the use of their creativity to produce their own persuasive advertisement.
Lesson will contribute to further developing the students’ persuasive writing skills.
Lesson OverviewDay 1
•Students are introduced to effective advertising practices by clipping examples from print media and discussing them as a class.
Day 2
•Assignment is explained and students begin the planning their advertisement for a 5th grade class trip
Day 3
•Students are introduced to Kerpoof website and create their advertisement.
Day 4
•Students display their add and cast their vote for the most appealing fieldtrip advertisement.
Technology Students will practice basic computer navigation
and keyboarding skills.
Students will begin building skills in graphic design.
Lesson employs the use of two websites:
Creativity Lack of opportunities in the classroom
for students to utilize creative abilities
Decreased appreciation for the arts
Fosters an environment that values multiple gifts and talents
Evaluation End product will be evaluated based on
a 4-point rubric
The rubric will evaluate the use of: Descriptive Words Effective Phrases Images Audience
