Using an industry-proven tool, students develop an overall assessment of venue operations and create a report for the venue manager. A copy of the assessment is included in the handout. The students share their model and articulate their view(s) based on the model’s representation. The final component engages reflection on challenges faced, outcomes, and assessment. Riemer (Eastern Michigan University) Candy Bars and Finance COSMA CPC: Principles of Sport Finance This display features how to incorporate a student activity in a sport finance course. Students have an in class sales assignment for understanding cost, revenue, and profit. In short, they have one hour to sell candy bars on campus. Experiential/Service opportunities expose Sport Management majors to practical applications of workplace knowledge and skills included in settings such as internships, game/event management practicums, and study abroad service projects. Nicholas Watanabe (University of Missouri) Employing NCAA Data in Economics and Finance COSMA CPC: Economics of Sport, Principles of Sport Finance This display will present the use of financial data sources, such as the Equity in Athletics Database website in the classroom setting. The revenue, expense, and other financial data on these websites can be employed to perform statistical calculations and analysis in: class, projects, or even homework and additional assignments. This presentation provides an overview of the collaborative efforts that led to the development of the LGBT Issues in Sport: Theory to Practice Blog. An instructor’s guide for how to use the blog as a resource to engage sport management and sport media majors will be offered as a handout.

This “current events” exercise enables students to test their abilities in reacting to crucial situations that emerge in sport organizations. Students self-select topics based on sport-related issues in the news, role-play a sport manager who prepares an appropriate statement to read to the media (the class) and responds to questions. Reese (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor) Planning, Organizing, & Implementing a 5K Running Event COSMA CPC: Management (Sport Operations Management/Event & Venue Management) This display explores the application of a student centered management education experience. Students enrolled in a Sport Venue/Event Management course planned, organized, and implemented a 5K running event. McCullough (Bowling Green State University) Hands on Case Study – Create and Propose Solutions to Managers COSMA CPC: Finance/Accounting/Economics This display will feature a series of assignments for sport finance students to apply concepts to real-time issues within the industry. Student lead discussion groups perform equally as well on exams and have the potential to produce greater interest in course material compared to traditional methods. However, assessing the performance of these groups can be quite difficult. This display will present a solution to overcoming limitations while reducing instructor workload.

Ted Peetz (Belmont University) Beyond PowerPoint: Building a more effective presentation COSMA CPC: Integrative Experiences This display features lessons learned through a Sloan Consortium Workshop on web-based presentation alternatives which engage learners, build communities, and provide full discussion and continuing dialog for online courses. The display hopes to expand current knowledge and skills in online and blended teaching and learning strategies. Handouts will be provided. Utilizing COSMA principles, this case study proposes how key content areas can be retained while still collaborating with other business management disciplines to provide the efficiencies management demands.

Soojin Kim (Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) and Yongjae Kim (Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) Incorporating Technology in Classroom: SurveyMonkey COSMA CPC: Sport Marketing This presentation features incorporating the SurveyMonkey software into sport marketing class. Based on a given scenario, this in-class activity requires students to develop and post survey questionnaire on SurveyMonkey site. The presentation will address the significance of technology based activity and provide sport management educator with a useful teaching method. Through these requirements to assess all aspects of CPC areas, students are given the opportunity to gain a more holistic set of relevant experiences in a practical setting. Lupinek (University of Minnesota) Development of the Teaching Images Made Effective (TIME) Database COSMA CPC: Sport Marketing This presentation features the most used sport-marketing images used in teaching, as given from top sport management instructors worldwide. The results serve to broaden the media database of instructors so they may use these images to engage in effective classroom teaching. Wilson (University of Tennessee) Flipping the Sport Management Classroom COSMA CPC: Social, Psychological and International Foundations of Sport Management Integrating the “flipped classroom” instructional delivery method into a traditional course allowed deeper connections and more meaningful applications. In-person class meetings of an undergraduate Recreation and Sport Management course (Social Issues in Sport) were bolstered with online presentations, assessments, interactions, and extensions making class time more productive. Tim Newman (York College of Pennsylvania) Branding/Recruitment Video Assignment COSMA CPC: Sport Marketing This recruitment video is the final product of a branding study by Sport Marketing students. The first part surveyed current students and alumni. The second part involved the Public/Media Relations in Sport class producing the video based on the branding study results. Former students are featured in weekly “Professional Perspectives” forums that coincide with a six-week unit on Career Development. A handout describes the activity and participant perceptions.

Krill (Ball State University) Integrating Graduate Students as Managers of Undergraduates in an Event Management Course COSMA CPC: Integrative Experiences This display will demonstrate an integrative approach to sport management education funded by a Community of Engagement grant whereby graduate students in a management theory course served as managers to groups of 3-5 undergraduates during execution of community-based events (i.e., golf tournament, 5k race). Each podcast includes an expert describing a scenario. Students write a paper answering the expert’s questions posed in the podcast. The template for creating a podcast and written student assignment are available in handout format. Workman (Barry University) "Flipping" Out Over Facility and Event Management COSMA CPA: Sport Operations/Event and Venue Management Flip teaching is a form of classroom instruction that emphasizes technology and interaction over lecturing. This display presents techniques for reconstructing the traditional facility and events course to create a “flipped” classroom model. Handouts will be available.

The use of technology for analyzing information has become commonplace in the sport business industry. Use of Excel for financial data is ubiquitous. Students used smart phones, tablets, or computers to click on hyperlinks to ethical queries and post responses, appearing as “sticky notes” on the canvas. Derived from practical experiences, a highlight will be made on specific procedures for constructing effective social media platforms for current and future student interns.

This presentation will highlight the utility of a field-based project that stretches across multiple courses and instructors. The project involves three stakeholders including an American Hockey League (AHL) team, a graduate Sport Finance and Sales course, and a graduate Event and Facility Management course. Further, post-tour debriefing encourages student reflection in examining potential careers, and classroom discussion links course concepts to sport management practices. Prohibited behaviors include: watching, listening, or talking about sports; wearing apparel; and engaging in sport social media. Robert P. Mathner (Troy University) and Anthony W. Dixon (Troy University) Sport Event Management: Planning, Organizing, Leading and Evaluating Student-Led Sporting Events COSMA CPC: Integrative experience.

This display features information related to an undergraduate Sport Event Management course whereby students are provided opportunities to plan, prepare and administer three separate sport and fitness related events. Students work as a class to collect consumer data regarding a real-life sport marketing issue, then use that data to develop group solutions. Research indicates rapport is associated with increased student participation, motivation and learning. However, effective strategies for male professors may not be for female professors. Zhang (Advisor, University of Georgia) Providing Sea Sport Activity Classes for University Students during the Summer Sessions through Collaborations with Sea Sport Services COSMA CPC: Sport Marketing Sea sports (e.g., sailing, surfing) are a growing segment of the sport industry; however, university students in the U.S., especially in landlocked states, rarely have accessibility to these activities. This presentation highlights the need of collaborating with sea sport services so that courses can be offered during summer sessions. Zhang (Advisor, University of Georgia) It Is Off Screen This Time: Developing Teaching Modules on Promoting Chinese Traditional Martial Arts in North America COSMA CPC: Integrated Experience Kung Fu Panda has pushed consumer interests in Chinese traditional martial arts to a new height. Contradictorily, their lack of off-screen popularity requires much promotional effort to garner a broader appeal. This presentation offers teaching modules on promoting martial arts to be incorporated into a sport marketing or activity course. Davies (University of Northern Colorado) Double-Entry Journal with Application (DEJA) COSMA CPC: Activity requiring critical thinking and cooperative learning The double-entry journal is an ongoing assignment which requires students to read from the textbook and synthesize the material into a practical application of the knowledge. Gray (University of Northern Colorado) & Janet Howes (University of Northern Colorado) Hot Topics Debate and Nominal Group Technique COSMA CPC: Sport Marketing and Communications The Hot Topics Debate centers on the application of course content to contemporary industry issues. A Nominal Group Technique assists students in identifying issues. Students must research, analyze, and substantiate their findings in the context of a weekly staff meeting. Hospitality and Food Management majors join Sport Administration majors in two separate classes with two separate events: a 5k and health fair and golf tournament fundraiser. Students are able to compare their research results with traditional American models.
