Teaching goals and Methods
Goal: Communicative competence.The purpose of the language learning is the ability to communicate
competently, to put in another way, achieve the student will able to
communicate properly in the foreign language.
To achieve this communicative competence, there are four areas:
o Linguistic competence: Its knowing how to use thegrammar, syntax and vocabulary of a language.
o Social competence: its knowing how to use and respond tolanguage appropriately in a setting or specific topic.Expressing and knowing attitudes.
o Discourse competence: its knowing how to interpret thelarger context and how to get what we express is coherent
when we write email or speeches or create conversations.
o Strategic competence: it's knowing how recognize andrepair communication breakdowns when we try to express
my ideas or understand someone ideas.
The class language must focus on the learner and the learningprocess that will resemble the one that students learned their first
language and they'll actively participate in the learning process.
Method: Learner-centered instruction.o Input-output models. The teacher provides information (input)
which students will use it (output).
o Classroom activities incorporate real-world situations.o Encouraging students because they gain confidence in their
abilities.
o The teacher will include in his class how to use learningstrategies.
There's a problem with this method. If the students are accustomed
to more traditional teacher-centered, they may resist the learner-
centered because they must be more involved in the learning
process. However they change their opinion when they realize that
improve their communicative competence.

Guidelines for communicative, learner-centered instruction.There are ten guidelines which will help us in learner-centered
instruction.
1. Provide appropriate input. Input is the language to whichstudents are exposed and it gives learners the material they
need to develop their ability to use the language on their own.
We can give input through two ways:
a. Finely tuned input. We can say that type of input is thetraditional language learning. Is matched to learners
current comprehension level and connected to what
they already know. It focuses on conscious learning of a
specific point. Its controlled by the instructor or textbook
author.
b. Roughly tuned input. Learning goes beyond the student'sprevious knowledge. It focuses on authentic use of
language in listening or reading passages. There's a
minimal alteration by the instructor or textbook. It
supposes challenges to use listening and reading
strategies.
Use language in authentic ways.Student not only must limit to learn about language, he needs and it's
very important, hear and read the language, and instructors can
make this happen in two ways:
1. Teacher talk: Always try to use the language as naturally aspossible when you are talking to students. Use vocabulary and
sentence structures with which students are familiar. He uses a
different ways to explain the same idea.
2. Materials: Providing real reading material appropriate to theirlevel, this motivates students because they can use the
language in real situations. Introduce relevant vocabulary and
grammatical structures in advance. Provide context by
describing the content and typical formats for the type of
material.
Provide contexts.

Instructors can help students to have an authentic experience of
understanding and using language if they ask them about the topic
of that they can predict from the title or a heading of a reading or
they review the vocabulary and sentences and review social and
cultural expectations.
