Alternative Assignment

Read the article Teaching Games for Understanding in the Physical Education and Intramural Clipboard (vol.6, n.1).

When Can We Play the Game?

6. What is the basic premise of TGfU, and what is the model meant to do?

7. What are the four game categories within the TGfU model?

8. Explain why exposing students to the primary rules, fundamental skills and tactical problems associated with

Sequence of Developing a Lesson/Unit

Compare the TGfU Model with a Traditional Techniques-Based Model. Name one difference between the sequence in

which they are taught. Why do you think this difference exists?

Target Games 1. How do you score in a target game?

2. Give five examples of target games.

3. Pick two tactics from curling. How do you think each tactic could be applied to another target game? For

example, making controlled use of force could also apply when putting in golf – you need to hit the ball with the

appropriate amount of force in order to get the ball in the hole.

Striking and Fielding 1. What are the skills involved in Striking/Fielding Games?

Locomotor Skills:______________________________________________________________________________

Non-locomotor Skills: __________________________________________________________________________

Manipulative Skills: ___________________________________________________________________________

2. What are the basic strategies common to all Striking/Fielding Games?

3. Give two examples of Striking/Fielding Games or Sports. Think about the sports we did in class.

4. Using the two game examples above, provide two skills you used in both games and describe how they were

different. For example, both cricket and baseball involve hitting a ball with a bat, but in cricket we used a cricket

bat to hit on a 360 playing field, while in baseball we used a baseball bat to hit in front of us only.

Net/Wall Games 1. What are the 4Rs described in the article? Give a description of each.

2. Give three examples of net/wall games, using the information provided to help.

Invasion/Territory Games 1. What is the object of invasion/territory games?

2. What are the three principles of play?

3. Describe the three tactical awareness components.

Space Force Time

4. Give three examples of invasion/territory sports or games, using the information provided to help.

5. Choose one of the sports or games you listed in #4. Pick one tactical awareness component from each space,

force and time, and explain how it’s applied in the sport or game you picked. For example, soccer is an

invasion/territory game. Players must move to open space to receive a pass (space), kick the soccer ball with the

top of the foot “laces” in order to get the ball up in the air (force) and shoot on the net when an opportunity is

provided (time).

The last category in the TGfU model is Individual Pursuits. These are individual sport/fitness activities. Can you think

of five examples of Individual Puruits? Think about the activities we are doing this semester.

Now that you have read through the TGfU model as well as each game category, what game category do you like

most? Why?
