Review February 2019

Introduction At Compass School we believe in the concept of lifelong learning, and in the idea that both adults and children learn new things every day. We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Through our teaching we equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help children to lead happy and rewarding lives. Aims We believe that children learn best in different ways and this is also linked to their readiness to learn, as demonstrated by our curriculum wedge model below.

At Compass School we provide a rich and varied learning environment that allows all children to develop their skills and abilities to their full potential. Through our teaching we aim to:

Enable children to become confident, resourceful, enquiring and independent learners.

Provide children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to make a confident start in their next schools.

Foster children’s’ self-esteem, and help them to build positive relationships with other people.

Ensure there is a consistency of approach and continuity throughout the school, but that there is sufficient flexibility to take account of different barriers to learning.

Develop children’s’ self-respect, encourage them to understand the ideas, attitudes and values of others, and teach them to respect other people’s feelings.

Show respect for a diverse range of cultures and, in so doing, to promote positive attitudes towards other people.

Enable children to understand their community, and help them feel valued as part of it.

Help children grow into reliable, independent and positive citizens.

Effective Learning We know that children learn in many different ways, and respond best to different types of input; we must therefore deliver teaching in different ways to address the needs of all our learners. We take this into account when planning our teaching and ensure all learners have the opportunity to develop and learn in a variety of ways. Challenging them to attempt and try new things and not just stick to what they are comfortable with. We ensure the best possible environment for learning by developing a positive atmosphere where pupils feel safe and feel they belong, where they enjoy being challenged, but where they enjoy learning, and know that they will succeed because they know the challenge will have been set at the right level. The structure of a lesson should be planned:

To connect the learning with previous work.

To give learners the ‘big picture’ of the whole lesson.

To explain the learning objectives, and why the lesson is important.

To present the information in a range of styles.

To allow opportunities for the pupils to build up their own understanding through various activities.

To review what has been learnt, and so increase recollection.

To provide feedback, celebrating success and reviewing learning strategies.

To outline the next step in the learning before moving on. We offer opportunities for children to learn in different ways. These include:

Investigation and problem-solving

Research and discovery

Group work

Pair work

Independent work

Whole-class work

Asking and answering questions

Use of ICT

Visits to places of educational interest

Creative activities

Responding to musical or recorded material

Debates, role-plays and oral presentations

Designing and making things

Participation in athletic or physical activity. We encourage and promote our pupils to work as independently as possible, strategies to support this include:

Use of ‘prove it’ purple in our AfL Policy.

Posters/displays in zones promoting independence – for example, where pupils are encouraged to build up from consulting their ‘boss’ (teacher) to ‘buddy’, ‘board’ and eventually their own ‘book’ when progressing in their learning.

Use of learning walls in classrooms for pupils to use to recall, review, revise and add to.

Learning Objectives and/or Success Criteria is shared with pupils so they can self-assess their own progress and use as a tool to improve.

We encourage children to take responsibility for their own learning, to be involved as far as possible in reviewing the way they learn, and to reflect on how they learn – what helps them learn, and what makes it difficult for them to learn. What Does High Quality Teaching and Learning Look Like? We have identified the teacher’s role in this as:

Being a positive role model.

Investing time in building strong, positive relationships with children in their class.

Being an active participant in collaborative planning as part of PPA, JPT, team meetings, citywide subject network meetings and staff CPL.

Keeping abreast of current research and initiatives.

Liaising regularly with parents in relation to their child’s learning and how this can be supported at home.

Liaising with and learning from colleagues in order to continuously improve teaching practice.

Supporting children, with support from colleagues to remove barriers to learning.

Ensure that the learning environment is safe, calm, and accessible and that displays support the current learning.

We have identified the Teaching Assistants’ role in this as:

Being a positive role model.

Investing time in building strong, positive relationships with children in their class.

Participating in team meetings.

Liaise with teachers so that learning intentions and children’s next steps are understood.

Actively seeking to remove barriers to learning.

Keeping abreast of current research and initiatives.

Liaising with and learning from colleagues in order to continuously improve practice.

Ensure that the learning environment is safe, calm, and accessible. We have identified the main factors that contribute to effective lessons. Before the lesson the teacher will have:

Relevant knowledge of the subject.

An understanding of where this lesson fits into a sequence of lessons and the curriculum map for the year.

Identified the aims and intended learning outcomes for the lesson.

Detailed knowledge of each child’s prior learning.

Expectations of progress within the lesson for each child.

Planned the teacher’s role for the various stages of the lesson.

Planned other adult’s role for the various stages of the lesson.

Planned activities taking account of children’s age, individual needs, learning styles and prior learning and thought through possible alternative activities, strategies, support and challenge to use in response to ongoing AfL.

Provision made for all pupils to have full access to the curriculum through advice and support from the SENCo where required.

Ensured the relevant resources are available and accessible.

Planned ongoing AfL (e.g. interactive strategies, questioning, observation, review of work).

During the lesson the teacher will:

Give clear information and explanation to the children.

Motivate and inspire the children.

Tell the children the aim of the lesson and how these relate to previous and future learning.

Ensure expectations of work output, attitude and behaviour are clearly communicated and enforced using the school’s behaviour system.

Share success criteria (or involve the children in the creation of success criteria).

Respond to individual needs but have an awareness of the whole class.

Develop the children’s learning to learn skills.

Use questioning to encourage higher order thinking.

Give verbal feedback to the children.

Communicate efficiently with other adults present.

Evaluate the learning and progress being made as the lesson progresses and deviate from planning where appropriate.

During the lesson the children will always be expected and encouraged to:

Show positive attitudes to learning.

Listen attentively to teaching input.

Participate appropriately in activities.

Seek out resources to support learning.

Make reference to any support material provided.

Work hard to complete tasks in the time allocated.

Collaborate with other learners if required.

Seek help from peers or adults if required.

Evaluate their own learning. After the lesson the teacher will:

Communicate as appropriate with the Teaching Assistant.

Mark any work and provide feedback according to the school’s AfL Policy.

Assess the children’s learning and adjust future planning or build in additional opportunities to consolidate, or tackle misconceptions

Evaluate and reflect on the lesson as a whole and adjust future planning accordingly. Monitoring The quality of teaching and learning is regularly evaluated by taking into account the following evidence from the following monitoring activities:

Schemes of work for individual subjects are developed to ensure progression and continuity in the subject throughout the school. These are updated regularly and monitored by the Curriculum Assistant Headteacher.

Medium Term Plans are drawn up for each class in each subject area. Termly plans are evaluated each term and adjusted annually and monitored by the Curriculum Assistant Headteacher.

Lesson Observations – an observation of a lesson of between 20 minutes to 1 hour takes place once a term. Teachers receive verbal and written feedback in relation to the lesson, but do not receive a grading for the lesson. As part of the lesson observation feedback the teacher and their line manager/person who completed the lesson observation will also complete a ‘typicality of teaching’ review, taking in to account pupil work, progress in data, planning and the learning environment. This ensures feedback is not solely focused on the ‘snapshot’ of a lesson observation and draws together all key elements of teaching and learning practice, streamlining discussions and not having them in isolation as they all link together.

Book Scrutiny – an analysis of evidence of pupil’s learning by examining children’s work in books, as mentioned above, takes place after each lesson observation as part of the ‘typicality of teaching’ review. There will also continue to be regular monitoring of key focus areas based on analysis of data reviews for example: progress, attendance, EAL, PP. If any specific issues arise teachers will also receive individual feedback and support.

Pupil Progress Data – in relation to children taught by the teacher this information is collated half termly.

Learning walks – these have set themes throughout the year and link to our SIP.

Every term, the Leadership Team will review the ‘typicality of teaching’ so they can accurately assess the consistency, approach and impact of standards that teaching and learning is having on all children. Monitoring and Review We are aware of the need to monitor the school’s Teaching and Learning Policy, and to review it regularly, so that we can take account of new initiatives and research, changes in the curriculum, developments in technology or changes to the physical environment of the school. Appendix The following documents are used to support planning, teaching and learning and are in place as examples of good practice to be used. Compass School also use BlueSky to produce and record completed monitoring templates as part of staff CPL.

1. Primary lesson plan template. 2. Secondary lesson plan template. 3. Primary planning web example. 4. Long term plan templates examples – Primary; KS3 intervention; KS3 permanent;

Year 10; Year 11. 5. Lesson observation feedback template – Teaching Staff. 6. Lesson observation feedback template – Teaching Assistants. 7. Typicality of teaching review.

Wild

Things!

In English, I will be looking at the book ‘Where

the Wild Things are’ and discussing how pictures

are used to create an effect. We will be

discussing how words can have different

meanings. I will also spend time on my joined

handwriting, my grammar and my spellings. I will

choose a reading book and read aloud to my

teacher.

In Science, We will be

studying the life cycles of

plants and animals, particularly

insects and birds. We will be

looking at animals in the wild

and seeing how they have

adapted to their environments.

In Geography, I will be looking

at maps and using fieldwork to

map my environment. I will

observe, measure and record

things in my local environment.

In Maths, I will be using the

written method of column

addition and subtraction to solve

problems of up to 4 digits. I will

be practising my times tables

and my multiplication and division

skills, as well as telling the time.

In SMSC, British Values and in

SPICE Time, I will be learning

to work with my peers as part of

‘Mighty Mercury’ Class. We will

be looking at different cultures

and how these have influenced

our society. We will also discuss

‘What makes a good friend’.

In PE, I will be running, jumping,

catching and throwing in

isolation and in combination. I

will play competitive games

whilst learning to develop

flexibility and control.

In History I will be looking

at Mayan civilizations and

comparing this to how we live

today. We will be looking at

different gods and how they

worshipped them.

In Art & DT I will be looking at the

flower paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe

and emulating her style, painting onto

canvas. We will be comparing this to the

illustrations in the ‘Wild Things’ and

making our own pictures using the jungle

theme.

In Music, I will experiment

with different types of music

and see how these can change

our feelings. We will be

painting whilst listening to

different music.

In Information Communication

Technology (ICT), I will learn

to log on using my Compass login

details and save my work in my

own folder. I will be looking at

instruction writing and giving

others directions.
