What Educators Want from Digital Instructional Tools

TEACHERS PERCEIVE THAT MORE RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE AND SUFFICIENT
© 2015 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation |
9
DIGITAL RESOURCES ARE NOT ROBUST ENOUGH BECAUSE THEY…
Do not fully support student mastery
Are not fully aligned to standards
(including Common Core)
Are supplemental only
Are not fully aligned to assessments
Are not in a usable format for my
classroom
Do not match my approach to teaching

BARRIER: STUDENT ACCESS AT HOME

“Districts need to give the teachers a chance to
check out the technology before the school buys it.
The district needs to learn the teachers’ needs
before they just purchase a product.”

BARRIER: MOST TEACHERS DON’T HAVE MUCH CHOICE

WAIT! TEACHER CHOICE MATTERS
When teachers don’t get a choice, we’ve seen
time and time again that:
USE
PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS
Schools may opt to discontinue
renewals/subscriptions when they see how much
$ is wasted.

Making Data Work
However, more than two-thirds (67%) say they are not satisfied with the effectiveness of the data from the tools they use in the classroom
Teachers believe in the promise of data driven
instruction, but challenges remain.
78% believe data help validate where their students are
and where they can go
69% believe tailoring instruction to meet the needs of
individual students is required to improve student
achievement

TOOLS TO HELP TEACHERS USE DATA –MAJOR UNMET NEEDS

Digital instructional tools are often:
Overwhelming
Incompatible with one another
Inconsistent in the level of detail provided
Too slow to provide actionable information
