Getting started Introduce yourself, say: Hello! Welcome back to school! My name’s (Paul). What’s your name? Ask the children individually. Then ask random questions: What’s your favourite subject? What’s your phone number? What’s your email address? Write the days of the week and the months on the board and make sure the children know them. Ask questions: Which month is before (January)? What time is your English class? What days do you have English?

1 Listen and sing. 1.2

Say: Open your books at page 2. Ask the class to look at the picture and say: Do you remember our friends? These are Anita, Ben, Kim and Mark. Then explain to the children that they are going to listen to a song about coming back to school. Tell them to listen very carefully and to follow the song in their books. Play the CD twice. Let the children read the song again and then play the CD again. This time the children join in. Divide the class into four and assign one verse to each group. Play it once more. The children join in with their verses.

2 Listen and read. 1.3

Say: Look at Activity 2. Now we’re going to listen to Ben. He is answering some personal questions. He wants to join the IT club. Tell the children to listen carefully and to read the conversation. Play the CD and tell the children to listen. Tell them to close their books, and play the CD again. Ask: What’s Ben’s address? What’s his phone number? What’s his email address?

3 Now act out.Say: Look at Activity 3. Divide the class into pairs. Ask the children to write a list of questions like those in Activity 2 and then interview each other. Tell them they can also add other questions: What are your hobbies? What’s your favourite film/book/pop group? Go around the class listening to the children as they practise the exercise. When they have finished, ask for volunteers to come to the front of the class to act out the dialogue.

Finishing off Ask the children to write down their resolutions and plans for the year to display on a notice board: My name’s (Toby). I’m in class (6B). This year, I want to join the IT club. I want to learn to play the guitar. I want to play basketball twice a week.

Getting startedRemind the children of the characters in Level 6: Anita, Kim, Ben and Mark. Write the names up on the board. Ask the children to tell you something about each character.

1 Write in order, then write the letters.Say: Open your Activity Books at page 2. Tell the children that the words in the sentences have been mixed up, so they have to write them in the correct order. When they have done that, tell them to find the correct answer from the sentences on the right-hand side of the page and to write down the letter that appears next to that answer. Go around the class checking the sentences and checking that the children have written the correct letter. When you have done that, ask for volunteers to read out their sentences and ask the rest of the class to call out the correct letters.

2 Read and complete.Say: Look at Activity 2. Ask the children to fill in the information about Alex. Explain that they have to complete the sentences with the correct word or words. When they have finished, ask for volunteers to read out sentences from Alex’s profile.

3 Complete your IT club member’s card.Say: Look at Activity 3. Explain to the children that the information on a member’s card is similar to that shown in Alex’s profile in Activity 2. This time, though, they have to write their own information for their own member’s card. Go around the class checking the childrens’ work.

Finishing offTell the children to write a short description of a member of their family. Explain that they can use Alex’s profile on page 2 of their Activity Book as a guide. When they have finished, ask them to read their profiles to the rest of the class.
