Founded in 1935, Millfield’s vision is to be the world leader for the development of children. There are nearly 1300 students at the senior school (Year 9 to Upper Sixth), with a 3:1 ratio of boarding to day. Although essentially a rural British school, 20 per cent of Millfield students are international and come from more than 70 countries. (v) Assist the Head of LSC & EAL in monitoring the teaching and learning strategies and quality control for EAL students to ensure the maintenance of high academic standards

(vi) Monitoring and advising on the type and range of teaching and learning resources being utilised to meet the needs of students with AEN and ensuring the department is adequately resourced

(vii) Advise on students’ academic programmes in relation to their level of English

(viii) Liaising with all relevant parties (students, staff, parents, agents, etc.)

(b) Identification, assessment and monitoring student progress (i) Assist the Registrar with interviews and assessments of prospective students with EAL, coordinating the EAL staff team as appropriate(ii) liaise with feeder schools and/or external agencies regarding students

(iii) maintain and develop (with Admissions) processes for the initial EAL screening of all overseas students new to the school

(iv) Ensure the appropriate class and support settings for students with EAL

(v) Respond to concerns expressed by tutors, parents or students themselves and provide a process of assessment and identification for individual students who seem to be experiencing difficulties

(vi) Liaise with the SENCo where a student may have a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD)

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of the Learning Support Centre (LSC) & EAL the post-holder will provide specialist teaching in English as an Additional Language (EAL) as well as being in charge of the day-to-day delivery of EAL teaching in the Department.

The Teacher in Charge of EAL will:

• Have a recognised EAL teaching qualification (Preferably Level 7/DELTA)

• Have experience of teaching students with EAL• Have some experience of managing of staff• Have some experience of CLIL (Preferable)

As the Teacher in Charge of EAL, the post-holder will report to, and be directed by, The Head of LSC & EAL and will have the following responsibilities:

(a) Teaching and learning management(i) Quality First Teaching of students in the EAL Department and delivering intervention for students with EAL on a range of courses including the Cambridge English suite of exams (including PETfS, FCEfS, CAE, PCE), Cambridge International iGCSE ESL and IELTS

(ii) Developing curriculum, schemes of work and interventions for students with EAL

(iii) Monitoring the progress of and target setting for individual students

(iv) Advising other teachers on the most effective teaching strategies and differentiation of resources for students with EAL, including input into whole school and small group training on matters relating to teaching students with EAL

(vii) Maintain and develop processes to collect and interpret assessment data to monitor the attainment and progress of students, and keep records of this

(viii) Disseminate relevant information on the needs and levels of students (using the Millfield Levels for EAL) via iSAMS and training

(ix) Manage referrals to the EAL Department for students with EAL whose needs may require investigation, including relevant assessment of these students

(c) Communication (i) liaise with tutors to identify students requiring EAL support; (ii) liaise with the SENCo where a student has a diagnosed SpLD to put in place an overall programme of provision

(iii) liaise with students’ parents or agents where necessary and at Parents’ Meetings

(iv) Liaise with Teacher in Charge of International Students with regards to pastoral needs, Induction etc.

(v) Liaise with higher education staff, careers and universities with regards to student needs and qualifications

(d) Examinations access arrangements (i) Remain updated on exam specifications for exam courses and amend schemes of work where appropriate

(ii) Liaise with the Exams Officer regarding entries, centre arrangements, external assessors and other relevant paperwork and processes

(iii) Liaise with the Exams Office, or oversee this liaison between Exams Administrators and Exams Office regarding invigilation and staffing(iv) Oversee the management of IELTS exam coordination with i/c IELTS teacher(v) Evaluation of external examination results sharing with Head of LSC & EAL(vi) Provide the necessary information, at the appropriate time, to students, their parents, staff and the Examinations Officer concerning students who warrant extra time in examinations for the use of bi-lingual dictionaries or are permitted to use bi-lingual dictionaries(vii) Maintain and make available to staff information on students’ access arrangements

(e) Leadership and management (i) Input into the development of the School’s EAL policy (and liaise with the Head of LSC & EAL accordingly)(ii) Maintain the departmental handbook and advice for academic staff(iii) Report and ensure cover for staff absence

(iv) Manage the Health and Safety of the EAL Department(v) Monitor and advise on subject report writing(vi) Chair weekly and other departmental meetings and attend weekly meetings with Head of LSC & EAL(vii) Input into the departmental self-review and target setting(viii)Input into the Departmental timetable and staff loadings with the Head of LSC & EAL(ix) Input into the departmental budget and ordering of resources(x) Input into the delegation of departmental responsibilities (xi) Career development (Coaching and Reflection for Development reviews, departmental INSET and other forms of professional development, encouragement of staff to take departmental, school or external posts of responsibility)(xii) Assist the Head of LSC & EAL with discipline in the department and departmental sanctions

(f) Professional Development(i) Advising other teachers on the most effective teaching strategies and differentiation of resources for students with EAL, including input into whole school and small group training on matters relating to teaching students with EAL(ii) Ensure the department are updated on exam specifications for exam courses and amend schemes of work where appropriate(iii) Training teachers on the Millfield levels for EAL(vi) Organise, attend and share information from the HMC Canford Group, subject conferences, LA schools, and other local schools when necessary

Progress is measured through continuous assessment, informal tests and a formal end-of-year examination (year 10), with the final external iGCSE examination held at the end of year 11.

SIXTH FORM At Sixth form level, the majority of international students are prepared for IELTS Academic- the preferred English language qualification of most US and UK tertiary level institutions. Students sit a baseline test at the start of year 12, and a course is tailored for their individual language needs and future goals. During the year, as students improve, contact time may be reduced as required. Students keen to extend their English language skills will also have the opportunity to prepare for the Cambridge Advanced examination during their Sixth form years. This high-level English course develops students’ academic written and spoken English as well as comprehension of longer written texts and lecture style listening scripts. ACADEMIC COURSES CURRENTLY OFFERED AT MILLFIELD YEAR 9

We aim to develop students’ ability in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through extensive practice. Students are also encouraged to improve their general study skills and to communicate using English for practical, everyday purposes such as understanding straightforward instructions and public announcements, taking part in factual conversations, writing letters and making notes. Progress is measured through continuous assessment, informal tests and a formal end of year examination. Students are prepared for the Cambridge English Preliminary Test for Schools (CEFR B1) which are held in school in June. YEARS 10 AND 11

We aim to develop students’ ability in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through extensive study and practice. In this upper-intermediate level English language course, over the course of two years, students are prepared for the Edexcel English as a Second Language IGCSE. The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to develop:

• An understanding of a wide variety of complex reading texts, recognising implicit meaning and adapting own style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes

• An understanding of standard spoken language, whether live or broadcast, on both unfamiliar and familiar topics normally encountered in personal, social, academic or vocational contexts

• The ability to write clear, well-structured texts using an appropriate style, highlighting relevant salient issues, expanding and supporting points of view with supporting arguments (where relevant) and showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices

• The ability to express themselves fluently, spontaneously and appropriately in a range of speaking contexts with little obvious searching for expressions or use of avoidance strategies

• The skills necessary for further study or employment, either in English-speaking countries or where English is used as the main medium of communication for business and commerce

• An understanding of the nature of language in different cultural contexts in order to build up competence in communication.

THE DEPARTMENT The EAL Department benefits from a strong sense of teamwork which makes it a very happy and rewarding environment in which to work. There are three full-time members and one part-time member of the department and these come from different backgrounds and bring with them a wide range of experience. The de partment is strongly committed to helping students of all abilities achieve their academic potential in all areas of the curriculum and it is consequently held in high regard by students and staff alike. Class sizes range from 1:1 support to approximately ten students, but an average of five or six students is most common. As well as the teaching of English following schemes of work focussed on end of year externally assessed exams, EAL staff are expected to support the learning of students in other academic subjects, especially where students are deemed to be struggling to access the curriculum. This involves EAL teachers liaising closely with staff in other departments to see how the student can be best supported both in the EAL classroom and the subject classroom in question.

The EAL department is well-resourced in terms of textbooks, audio-visual and ICT equipment. Each member of staff has their own dedicated classroom which contains PC, Projector and telephone. All teaching staff are supplied with an iPad and extensive training on the use of mobile technology to help support their teaching and learning development. The department is also committed to enhancing the students’ education beyond the formal curriculum through exploring SMSC issues in class time through a range of texts, classroom discussions and activities.

BENEFITS OF SERVICE

Millfield School has high expectations of its staff and therefore looks to reward them with generous salary scale increments and beneficial conditions of service. All teachers are offered membership of a pension scheme and have longer holidays than the maintained sector. Class sizes are small (typical class sizes are 8-14) and most teachers have their own classroom. All teachers are issued with an iPad as part of our mobile learning project (there is a strong focus on the use of technology to support teaching and learning).

A wide range of opportunities for professional development exist and staff are encouraged to develop their skills and consider career options at all levels. There is ample opportunity to take on additional responsibilities for which there are allowances.

Fee concessions are available across the pre-prep, prep and senior school.

Millfield is set in beautiful grounds and staff are welcome to make use of the extensive leisure and sporting facilities (which includes gym, swimming pool, golf course, tennis courts, squash courts etc.) for themselves and their immediate family.

All staff enjoy free on-site parking. Heavily subsidised lunches (of outstanding quality) and free refreshments are available throughout the day.

Each member of the teaching staff has a voice on professional matters via the Common Room Chair. The ability to join a strong community through a number of social events (Staff Bar, Staff sports leagues etc.) is encouraged.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will involve teaching observation and interviews; candidates will be invited to interview in person, but a remote interview will be possible for candidates unable to travel.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All teachers at Millfield are expected to:

• Play a full part in the extensive games and activities programme.

• Be a group tutor attached to a boarding or day house. • Be attached to a boarding house as a liaison tutor,

doing a weekly evening duty. Millfield School has adopted the school-wide use of mobile technologies in teaching and learning, and applicants are expected to develop their own skills and teaching to make appropriate use of such opportunities.

Millfield School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Offers of appointment are subject to satisfactory references and DBS clearance.

Statutory induction is provided for NQTs. Staff are normally expected to find their own accommodation. A reduction in day fees is available to all full-time teachers for any son/daughter attending Millfield Schools from Reception to year 13.

Salary is according to the Millfield Scale.
