he volume in the bar levels out, with the constant chatter, clanki ng bottles a nd thetr umming of the guitar filling the air at King’s Court Tavern in D ow ntown Le esburg.
Andy Hawk is teacher at Loudoun County High School by day and songwriter and performery night. The crowd at King’s Court slowly trickles in on a slightly cold First Friday night.
his is Hawk’s 68th show at the tavern, although that may seem monotonous, it still draws arowd. Now, it’s not a riot scene, but an all around good time; definitely something you needn a Friday evening to unwind from the week.
He’s been writing since his 20s. Now 45, Hawk has played more than 300 times in and aroundeesburg since 2003.
It took me years to unfold. Now I can stand and do it. It was scary but it was always what Iwanted to do,” Hawk said. “I just did it 15 years later than I should have. But I did it anyway.”
He has written over 150 songs and has a total of five albums out with the sixth one due to hithe streets in June.
I was just sort of artistic. I always had to have an outlet. The thought of quitting never crossedmy mind,” Hawk said.
xtremely humble, he doesn’t think he’s the best thing out there, although his crowds may eem to disagree given his growing and longstanding popularity in the area.
I think I am a good songwriter. I have to get them out there someway, so I sing them,” Hawk aid. “I have a good enough bar-band singing voice, but I think someone else doing my songss something I really want. Musically, no, I just bang on chords.”

Over the years, his music production has improved. Having recorded his second album in theitchen of his Frederick, Md. home, Hawk now has a studio in his home in Hamilton that heecords his albums.
he finished product is sent off for mass production in Austin, Texas by Merel Bregante –ormerly a performer with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Loggins & Messina. He evenrummed for Steve Martin’s song, “King Tut.”
Gary Rudinsky, who’s been performing with Hawk for a little over three years says that Hawk s a “super songwriter” and he loves his songs.
hey both come from the same area around Pittsburgh, Pa. so they have the same mindsetbout growing up there.
A lot of his songs have a lot of those rust belt feel to them,” Rudinsky said. “They’re notxactly happy songs, but I guess you can take rest in the fact that somebody else is thinkinghat way.”
During Rudinsky’s sets of 35 songs, about 12 of them happen to be Hawk originals.
The one thing that I like is that he shares it with everybody,” Rudinsky said. “And he bringshe kids into it. He thinks he’s not a teacher, and he wants to be a songwriter but he is, heives the kids an opportunity to come out.”
I hope someday somebody big picks up his songs, because he deserves it,” Rudinsky ontinues. “He works really hard. I don’t know anybody else who works that hard. He takes it
ery seriously, and it’s evident, because it’s in his words and lyrics and just the way he puts itogether.”
As for what’s next for Hawk, touring may not be a huge option with his wife, step-child andog.
My goal is people will start doing my songs, I don’t care if it’s on a local level or a nationalevel,” Hawk said. “I still will be writing songs and recording them, because who else is goingo do it?”
I think the quality of the songs and recordings are getting better,” he continued. “I think opefully there will be people all over the place doing my songs, and someday I can quit ande the songwriter.”
