Showcase Unit Plan

Title: Una Fiesta de Cumpleaños (A Birthday Party)

Subject: Spanish

Grade Levels: 9-12th

Length of Time: 3 Weeks

Overview

In this 3-week unit, learners will meet 5 chapter objectives: to be able to describe

families, talk about celebrations and parties, ask and tell ages, express possession, and

understand cultural perspectives on family and celebrations.

Key activities of this unit include the Family Tree project, the viewing of the film

Fools Rush In, and the Mexican Family project. The Family Tree is an out of class activity where

students create their family tree, label it utilizing new vocabulary, and describe family

relationships using the verb tener. The film Fools Rush In supplements the chapter with a visual

representation of a typical Mexican family and the cultural clash with American life. Students

will make comparisons between how the two main characters interact with their families and

how they live out their beliefs. Lastly, the Mexican Family assignment is a two-part inquiry

project where students first browse the internet looking for information on Mexican families and

then create a display illustrating their research which they present to the class.

Rationale

The learning goals in this unit are important because learners will improve their basic

Spanish comprehension, increase their vocabulary output, enhance their ability to talk about

themselves and family, and develop an awareness of cultural differences.

1. This unit will prepare students with life skills to be successful in the real world by

improving language acquisition and critical thinking skills. Students will learn pertinent

vocabulary that will allow them to better communicate with the Latino population

worldwide. They will also gather a better understanding of the Latino culture and

consider multiple perspectives regarding belief systems.

2. Students will connect with this unit through the comparison of their culture with that of

the Latino community. They will make comparisons between parties and celebrations,

gender roles, family values, economic influences, religion, and parent/child relationships.

This unit will support creativity, choice, and personal relevance to learners through the

exploration of their beliefs, the analysis of another culture, and the personal reflection of

how each culture could complement each other. The unit will begin with a real life look

into Latino birthday parties to grab students’ attention and will conclude with their

display of choice to illustrate their learning.

3. This unit supports dispositions that will be helpful in the work place by broadening

students’ outlook on the vast differences in people’s belief systems and practices.

Not only will they become better critical thinkers, but they will be a well rounded person

in general. These abilities will help employees communicate more effectively and adapt

to a variety of situations when working with a diverse group of individuals.

4. This unit aligns directly with the prescribed standards and official curriculum for the

content area. The textbook used in this class titled Realidades outlines the standards that

are covered in the beginning of the chapter on page 220. The 5 strands are listed followed

by the standards and then a bulleted list of benchmarks. For example, in this unit students

should be able to talk about families and celebrations, read and listen to information

about family celebrations, present information about families and celebrations, talk about

new vocabulary through the recognition of cognates, and compare family celebrations

and the role of families.

5. This unit relates to the higher order concepts/skills of the discipline by challenging

students to analyze cultural differences and understand how belief systems work. Also,

students are challenged to use their knowledge of language acquisition through cognates

to recognize unfamiliar words.

Lesson Plans

# Topic Overview/Content/Process/1 Introduction to Latino Birthday

PartiesStudents will complete a KWL worksheet throughout the duration of the class focusing on what they know, what they want to know and what they learned. Teacher will provide a PowerPoint to teach students about Latino birthday parties through pictures and YouTube videos. Students will also learn some basic party vocabulary.

2 Review of Party Vocabulary & Introduction to the Family

Students will practice party vocabulary with a game. Teacher will introduce family terms and students will do exercises to practice the new words.

3 The Family Continued Students will play games and do worksheets to practice family vocabulary. They will watch a short video to reinforce party traditions and chapter vocabulary.

4 Review of Party Voc. & Continuation w/ Family

Students will review party vocabulary in preparation for their quiz. Students will then do partner activities to practice family vocabulary.

5 Introduction to the Verb “Tener”

Teacher will lecture over the present tense conjugations of the verb “tener”, while students take notes. Students will watch a YouTube clip to reinforce the concept. Afterwards, students will do partner activities to practice conjugating the verb and using it within context.

6 Continuation of the Verb “Tener”

Teacher will review what was taught yesterday. Students will do more practice activities with their partner and groups. Teacher will introduce new “tener” expressions.

7 Continuation w/ Tener Expressions & Family Tree Project

Students will watch a YouTube video that recaps what they learned before about the verb “tener”. They will interview their partners asking them questions to apply what they have learned. Teacher will introduce the Family Tree Project and students will begin working on the assignment.

8 Possessive Adjectives Teacher will introduce possessive adjectives and students will do activities for practice.

9 Movie - Fools Rush In Teacher will introduce the movie Fools Rush In and explain how it ties in with the Mexican Family Project that students will begin on Friday. Students will watch the first half of the movie.

10 Continuation of Movie – Fools Rush In

Students will watch the rest of the film Fools Rush In and have a brief discussion afterwards about the cultural clash between American and Mexican lifestyles and traditions. Afterwards, teacher will go over the Mexican Family Project that students will begin tomorrow.

11 Busca-Cultura: La Familia Mexicana(Cultural-Search: The Mexican Family)

Students will research online to find out what a typical Mexican family is like. They will look at gender roles, family value, economic influences, religion, parent/child relationships, and then write their own personal reflection based on what they learned.

12 ¿Cómo es su familia Mexicana? (What is your Mexican family like?)

Students will imagine that they are a Mexican who is about to begin a family exchange program with an American family. They will create a visual display with the most interesting aspects of their life based on their findings from internet research and the movie Fools Rush In.

13 ¿Cómo es su familia Mexicana? (What is your Mexican family like?)

Students will continue working on the Mexican Family Project.

14 Mexican Family Project Presentations

In groups, students will present their projects. After presentations, students will play review games to prepare for the unit test.

15 Review for Exam Students will play review games to prepare for the unit test.

16 Unit Test Students will take the Chapter 5A unit test covering family vocabulary, party vocabulary, the verb “tener”, possessive adjectives, and Mexican family life.
