The NSW Department of Education and Communities offers you the opportunity to work with one of the largest education providers in Australia with a network of over 2,200 schools throughout NSW.

Few careers are as professionally rewarding and personally satisfying as that of teaching. It is a career where you can actually make a profound and lasting contribution to the future by positively influencing the lives of your students.

Teaching offers you the opportunity to “make a difference” which is a great reason for you to choose teaching as a career.

If you have an affinity for working with children and young people and enjoy sharing your knowledge and experience with them you could make a great teacher.

Teaching also offers a unique arena in which to express your creativity. As a teacher you have the opportunity to share your knowledgeof a subject you enjoy, and at which you excel. You can also involve yourself in the broader education of students in creative, sporting and recreational pursuits.

A teaching career enables you to give something of lifelong value to your community. What’s more, it is one of the few professions that offer an ideal and flexible work/life balance. When you train as a teacher, you are also learning transferable skills that can equip you for many professions outside and beyond the classroom.

Teaching in a NSW public school is more than just a job - it’s an opportunity to pursue an intellectually challenging and creative career.

Teach what you love

As a teacher in NSW public schools, you will be at the forefront of innovation in curriculum delivery.

You can become a qualified teacher by completing:

• a double degree program such as a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching, or

• an integrated program (such as a Bachelor of Education) which includes both subject content studies and teacher education, or

• an undergraduate degree and a teacher education course (such as a Graduate Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Teaching or a Master of Teaching).

Information on the eligibility requirements for employment and accreditation as a teacher in NSW schools, including current approved initial teacher education programs, is available from the NSW Institute of Teachers website at www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au.

Early childhood and primary teaching areas

The undergraduate subject content studies in your degree should be aligned to the subject(s) you wish to teach. For primary teaching you need to have a range of subjects that cover all the primary curriculum areas.

Guiding students through their first years of learning is one of the most important responsibilities you can have as a teacher and one of the most rewarding.

Secondary teaching areas

NSW secondary school teachers deliver one or more subjects to students from Year 7 to Year 12. These subjects are broadly grouped into eight key learning areas: creative arts, English, human society and its environment, languages, mathematics, personal development, health and physical education and science and technology.

When you’re choosing what to study for an undergraduate degree and you’re not entering a Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching, choose a degree that is aligned with the key learning areas you want to teach.

Specialist teaching areas

With additional study, you can broaden your teaching range and expertise by teaching in a number of specialist areas including: careers advising, English as a second language, school counselling, special education, teacher librarian and vocational education and training.

Visit the teach.NSW website for more detailed information about individual teaching areas.

There is currently a high demand in NSW public schools for mathematics, science (with physics) and special education teachers as well as school counsellors. If you specialise in any of these areas your opportunities for employment as a teacher are greatly enhanced.

Become a teacher in a NSW public school and make a difference to your community and to the next generation.

Page 12: TEACH - make a difference in NSW public schools

At the moment, there is a high demand for teachers in the secondary teaching areas of mathematics, science (especially physics) and the specialist areas of school counselling and special education in western Sydney, south western Sydney and non-coastal, rural NSW.

Teaching in rural NSW

Teaching in the country offers exceptional opportunities for both experienced and beginning teachers. It’s a rewarding lifestyle choice that offers many advantages both personally and professionally.

Enjoying life in the country

Rural centres now offer many of the features and facilities once found only in cities, eliminating the necessity to travel to major city centres to enjoy a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Detailed and accurate information is readily available from tourist information centres via the internet, listing facilities such as schools and tertiary institutions, accommodation, restaurants, childcare facilities, hospitals and medical centres, shopping and lifestyle centres, entertainment venues and sporting facilities.

Choosing where to teach

A range of incentives and benefits is offered to supplement the salary of teachers in many rural locations. When making your selection of preferred teaching locations on your application why not consider schools offering greater employment opportunities and financial benefits and incentives? These include the school staffing areas of Bourke, Broken Hill, Deniliquin, Dubbo, Griffith and Moree.

When completing your online application, you will be asked where you are seeking employment. You can choose to maximise your opportunities by selecting “anywhere in the State”, or you can choose whole staffing areas, individual schools or a combination of both. Our online benefits calculator at www.teach.nsw.edu.au/calculator enables you to check individual schools and see what additional financial and other benefits are offered to teachers employed there.

A full list of schools attracting extra allowances and benefits is available on the benefits calculator at www.teach.nsw.edu.au/calculator where you can see exactly which benefits apply to each school.

Teaching in western and south western Sydney

High staffing demand also exists in the areas of western and south western Sydney. In recent years these locations have grown to become sophisticated metropolitan centres with modern infrastructure and family-oriented developments including parks, shopping centres, medical facilities and education institutions. More and more young families are choosing to live and work in western or south western Sydney, including teachers who have become aware of the attractive employment prospects in these areas.

Living and working in western and south western Sydney offers the best of both worlds. With Sydney’s CBD easily accessible, you’re free to experience the wealth of cultural and social opportunities available in Australia’s largest metropolis. At the same time, you can take advantage of the increased professional opportunities available to teachers in areas of western and south western Sydney.

Teacher retraining programs

The Department offers retraining programs to assist suitably qualified teachers in broadening their horizons and adding a whole new dimension to their teaching career.

Retraining opportunities are available for teachers in the curriculum areas of mathematics and technology (engineering studies).

They are also available in specialist teaching areas of special education, school counselling, careers advising, teacher librarianship, English as a second language and Reading Recovery tutoring.
