Tea Parties: The Voice of America Case Study: April 15 th 2009 Tea Parties, Despite Media’s insinuations they’re not just a Republican power play ` The United States of America was created to provide a haven and home for immigrants and has developed into one of the biggest and diverse countries in the world. Our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution in order to provide Americans with guidelines and hope for a new country and way of life. Now hundreds of years later Americans are trying to find the voices they used to call out to England and the world demanding they be recognized. The difference is today it’s happening in their own towns and they’re pleading for their own government, the one created to protect and help them, to do as they have promised. Through the omnipresence of cameras for everything today it was a reasonable expectation that their fight would be shown on the news and listened to. Instead they were either ignored or berated as fools. The media gave the people a dialogue of anti‐Americanism using sound and image bites to give the audience the impression of rabble rousers. The freedom of speech allowed to them by the shapers of our country was in full effect. The Tea (Taxed Enough Already) Parties took place on April 15 th 2009, all across the country. It was a gathering of people to protest taxation primarily and harkened back to the original Tea Party held in Boston when the Sons of Liberty tossed chests of tea into the harbor to protest unfair taxation. Many news outlets suggest that the entire concept of tea parties was a move by Republicans and Fox News to overthrow the Democrats and spread vitriol about the new President since Fox News was a sponsor. Paul Krugman of the New York Times wrote, “It turns out that the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass roots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects. In particular, a key role is being played by FreedomWorks, an organization run by Richard Armey, the former House majority leader, and supported by the usual group of right‐wing billionaires. And the parties are, of course, being promoted heavily by Fox News.”
