EDITORIAL:

Kia ora,

Welcome to Harete PHILLIPS as our new Convenor and Vivian BIRCH as our new Secretary on the 2003-2005 MIG Executive. All other positions remain unchanged. Outgoing Convenor Colleen PETRICEVICH was fare-welled at the AGM after serving on the MIG council since 1999. Colleen was presented with a MIG Certificate of Appreciation and a flowering potted Chrysanthemum. We wish Colleen well for the future and extend our heartfelt thanks for her dedication to the group over the past four years.

At the AGM a MIG Certificate of Appreciation was also presented to Mr. Eduard COWELL of Brisbane for his support of the group in providing a part of his personal web space to host the MIG website through www.rcyachts.net and for his assistance in uploading and maintaining our information online. This space does not come cheap from the American server and our group is fortunate to have this extensive web-space provided to us free of charge.

A further MIG Certificate of Appreciation was also pre-sented to Mr. and Mrs. Ron MATHERS and seeing guide-dog ‘Ilish’ from Waihi for their assistance in forwarding on Te Reo to our Secretary. Ron and Ilish take their task very seriously and after the newsletters are re-packed they walk to the Post Office and send the hardcopies on to the secretary for redistribution to our members. I know it seems complicated doing things like this but the newsletters might as well be included in the parcel I am posting back home as this adds very little to the postal charges. There has been no significant delay in delivering the newsletters to our members via this process. The presentation of all three Certificates were unanimously supported at the AGM. MIG Honours ap-pear on pages 8 and 9.

Two new positions have also been created, the formation of a MIG Archives was ratified at the AGM with the position of Archivist now falling within the portfolio of the

MIG Secretary with guidelines set in place. Secondly a Lookup Service has been implemented and Lorraine RICE will do a Look-up for our members at the Family Research Centre if a catalogue reference is supplied.

As mentioned above, Vivian BIRCH has now taken on the role of MIG Secretary. However, Brenda will con-tinue to coordinate all MIG correspondence and fulfill the Secretarial duties for a short time. During this transi-tional period Vivian is being prepared for the task, espe-cially in the process of forwarding on Member Interests to myself for inclusion on the MIG web page and several other responsibilities which need to be completed on a regular basis via the internet. Therefore all snail-mail should continue to be sent to Brenda until further notice, while the generic MIG E-mail address will continue to automatically process all E-mail correspondence without change [All MIG contact information appears on page 2].

Finally, there has been some concern expressed by some members about an advertisement in the May 2002 Te Reo by a previous sponsor. This was for tiles bearing Maori motifs. There was no conscious intention by the sponsor or the MIG that the “MIG” tile measuring 200mm x 200mm be used in connection with food. The three previous issues of the newsletter de-picted the tile with a family crest, of which two of these sponsor’s advertisements displayed the tile framed.

Two tiles depicting the MIG logo were donated to the MIG. One is on display at the Family Research Centre while the other was displayed at the MIG AGM, and neither is used for food. They are displayed as plaques on stands which was their original intended use.

I sincerely regret if any member has been offended. I would be grateful if any member can provide more spe-cific details on this type of protocol for a future newsletter which would be very interesting and obviously useful.

We are extremely grateful to all past and present spon-sors for their funding, as without such support Te Reo would not be economically possible.

Our new committee is keen and we are looking forward to the next couple of years.

Hei kōnei ra,

Bruce MATHERS. August 2003

A TALE OF FIVE CAMPAIGNS PART FOUR :

The ‘Kerry Bull’ Campaign 1866—Major General Trevor

Chute’s March Around Mount Taranaki.

The Cause: The Ngati Ruanui and Nga Rauru tribes refused to receive the Governor’s peace proclamation, which was made after Weraroa. Sir George Grey was determined to settle his south Taranaki problems once and for all. His instrument was the newly appointed Commander Major General Chute who had fought in the first Taranaki

war as a Major. On the Bluff and the Pugnacrow Chute was known to his Troops by the appropriate nickname ‘The Kerry Bull’ (a very runty breed of cow).

The War: 30th December 1865 General Chute sets out on his march from Wanganui to New Plymouth. 10th January 1866 Otapawa Pa near the present town of Hawera falls to Chute, 26th January 1866 British and Colonial Troops reach New Plymouth after cutting their way through the bush inland at Taranaki. 1st February 1866 Chute com-mences his return march to Wanganui. 9th February 1866 the force reaches Wanganui after circling Mount Taranaki, having destroyed seven Pa and 21 unfortified villages.

The Outcome: This campaign was believed at the time to be successful, but only caused further bitterness and strengthened the will of the South Taranaki tribes to resist. PA4

MIG member Peter ALLEN from Hamilton has kindly supplied us with five very interesting short tales; they are being printed in several issues of Te Reo as part of a series which started with Tale Number One in the Noema 2002 issue. Thank you Peter for your contin-ued support of the newsletter, which is genuinely appreciated. BM

WHO WANTS TO CELEBRATE 2004 ? Expression of Interest Only.

Although the MIG formed in 1993 it will officially be ten years old on the 3rd December 2004. Are any MIG members interested in gathering to celebrating this event? If so, can you please contact Brenda.

If enough people are interested in such a gathering a suitable time and location will be discussed further at a later date. One possible venue could be the FRC Dec 2004—although nothing definite has been decided at this early stage & will depend on the level of interest shown amongst our members. If you’re keen, please let us know!

INFORMATION OFFERED

Te Waipatoto Centenary (1896 - 1996) : 21pp with over 50 B&W photographs.

Two copies of this booklet which was produced by the Oparure Marae (Te Kuiti) have been kindly donated to the group by Mrs. Heeni PAYNE of Mooloolaba and have been sent to Brenda to be added to the FRC library holdings.

After cataloguing, one copy will remain at the FRC for reference purposes while the second copy will be made available for borrow-ing by our members.

Heeni is also trying to locate a copy of a second booklet printed to commemorate the opening of the second Marae - Te Waipatoto Tua rua to donate to the group BM

Taonui Manuscript :

This document is named after the person who recorded the genealogies in 1849, including some very detailed whakapapa of the Tainui (Nga Puhi), starting with Kupe. It is in both Maori and English although a little difficult to read in places. The first pages also give details of how the manuscript came to be written down which makes inter-esting reading. If any member is interested in a copy, please send Brenda 3x40¢ent stamps to cover photocopying plus a SSAE asking for the Taonui Manuscript. It is hoped extracts from the manuscript may also be included in future issues of Te Reo BM

The canoes that Maori arrived in traditionally gave rise to the different tribal groupings: the Genealogy of Maori culture derives from each canoe of their ancestors.

The Fleet was, according to tradition, inspired by Kupe, the great navigator who, according to who tells the story, either discovered New Zealand intentionally, or was blown away from Hawaiiki, and accidentally discovered New Zealand some time around 925.

Either way, he returned to Hawaiiki and brought back his people to this new land he named "Aotearoa" or "Land of the Long White Cloud", inspired by the clouds that hov-ered over the length of the Southern Alps.

The tribes of the South Island believe that Rakaihautu discovered New Zealand - as he is said to have had little food aboard his wakas, he moved to the South Island where Moas were available as a food source.

In 1350, after the main Fleet arrived in New Zealand, these Southern tribes were eventually overrun by the North Island arrivals, culminating around 1600 in an invasion by the Katimamoe, and a hundred years later by the Kaitahu.

Both tribes fought until the Katimamoe were forced to the remote south-west of the South Island. One of the last battles is thought to have been at Preservation Inlet in the Dusky Sounds, when Maru, a chief, led a war party against the Katimamoe - he overcame them, but his canoes were lost, and he was marooned there. He was discovered by Captain Cook, the last of a vanishing tribe that after Cook left, were never seen again.

MARAE DIRECTORY

I have compiled a Marae Directory from information available on the Internet through the www.maori.org.nz website for the benefit of our members without online ac-cess. There are contact details for approximately 460 Marae listed throughout the country and the database runs to about fifteen (15) pages, which is obviously too large to be reproduced in its entirety here. Therefore, the list has been printed in several issues of Te Reo as part of a series which started in the Noema 2002 issue. The series will be completed in the Noema 2003 Te Reo.

I would also appreciate MIG members reporting any errors, omissions and additions to Brenda so that we may have an accurate list of Marae throughout New Zealand (and overseas). BM

DISCLAIMER

The Editor and Webmaster wel-come contributions for publication, but reserve the right to edit as necessary. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the Society, MIG, Editor, Webmaster and/or the Committee, and we therefore do not accept any respon-sibility for information or opinions expressed.

All information is provided in good faith as a general reference source only and which is given for Genea-logical purposes as possible finding aids. The Society, MIG and their executives cannot vouch for the accuracy of any reference material.

The Maori Interest Group occasionally provides Maps as a general reference source only and the researcher should undertake more in-depth research, once the broad proximity of the Iwi has been identified.

When corresponding with officers of the MIG always quote your NZSG Membership Number and include a LARGE Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope [SSAE] with your letter if a reply is anticipated. BM

N.B. I am very reluctant to publish member’s E-mail addresses only in Te Reo – I don’t think that this is being fair to those members without the Internet and it is also limiting your own chances of receiving a reply to only those members with the Internet. BM

MIG OBJECTIVES

1/. To assist others researching Maori Whakapapa by way of sharing our knowledge of areas of research.

2/. To compile a list of repositories, books etc that will assist with Maori research.

3/. To acquire books purchased through the Maori Inter-est Group and from donations [and group badge pro-ceeds] for all [NZ] members to use.

4/. It is noted we will not be researching for others but offering assistance to give others a channel of research that may help them. We have a research officer who will offer assistance in an advisory capacity.

MIG Services: Quarterly Newsletters; February, May, August & November. Published Newsletter Queries. Brief Research Queries Answered. Members Surname/Whakapapa Interest List.

MIG Subscription: As from the 1st November 2001 Membership of the New Zealand Society of Genealogist Maori Interest Group is free to all Financial Members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists.
