    NEW MIG WEB ADDRESS

Below is a message as recently received from Netscape – our MIG web space provider.

Attention Netscape Web Site Members Alert -- Editing Ends Nov. 17 ”Starting November 17, 2001 you will no longer be able to use the Site Maker and File Manager tools, or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) offered on Netscape Web Sites. You will still be able to view your pages until Feb-ruary 2002. Because of this, we're asking all Web Site members to move pages and content to the new and improved Netscape My Webpage.”

    This basically means that Netscape are upgrading their system and our MIG web address has changed and will no longer be available after February 2002 at the previously advised address. So please update your bookmarks/favourites with the below NEW MIG WEB SITE ADDRESS;

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but this is totally beyond my control (we are totally at the mercy of Netscape). However, hopefully with Net-scape upgrading their system, this will now solve some problems members may have experienced in accessing the MIG site previously.

Most members will already have heard about the enormous fee increase Central Registry implemented in early October regarding NZRGO BMD Certificates and more importantly BMD “photocopies’ (for genealogical purposes).

BMD PHOTOCOPIES (*A4 Micrographic copies) have increased from $9.00 each to $30.00 each – something approaching a 240% increase!

    EDITORIALS

A FEW WORDS FROM HARETE: Tena Koutou Katoa Thank you for all your contributions to the "Te Reo", the first issue of our new look newsletter. The MIG Website that has been created by our web-master has been a great advantage. This facility has proven to be beneficial to members wishing to search for their whakapapa. Our web-master stated the advent of the Internet has been a great help to family historians but it cannot always replace the "hands on" approach. Please keep in touch with our Secretary, Brenda, with your news, views, new resources, helpful hints, useful websites and research queries. Harete Philips.

A FEW WORDS FROM BRUCE: Kia ora. As already detailed above, genealogy in New Zealand has re-ceived a severe blow in recent weeks when Central Registry increased the p r i ce o f an *A4 pho tocopy (micrographic copy) of a Birth, Death or Marriage entry from $9.00¢ to a massive $30.00¢. BMD Certificates fared no better, these too also now cost $30.00¢ each.

I for one am not ashamed to confess that I was (and still am) extremely an-gry when I first heard of these incredi-bly insane increases. Like many oth-ers on a fixed low income, it is now impossible for me to even consider purchasing an *A4 photocopy for gene-alogy – I must hasten to add, that even our more affluent members would

surely also have second thoughts about ordering a $30.00 *A4 photo-copy! Especially when these photo-copies are not even legal documents, but for inspection purposes only!

I cannot see why any member would now purchase an *A4 photocopy for genealogy from Central Registry when for exactly the same amount of money they can purchase a full Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate – a ‘legal’ docu-ment, certainly with a lot more colour about it! I know “photocopies” give us a bit more information (and even in one instance gave me additional hand-written notes in the margin) and lessen the chance of further (typing) errors during the transcribing process than actual Certificates, but given the

    (Continued on page 8)

  • PAGE 8 TE REO

choice between a $30.00¢ *A4 photo-copy or a $30.00¢ full Certificate, the choice in my opinion is obvious!

I posed the question to the Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. George HAWKINS through my email to him dated 11 Oct that, was this his actual intention, to do away with their “photocopying” service all together in lieu of “Certificates.” Unfortunately, the Minister never an-

swered my email to him, but instead he instructed the Registrar-General to respond to me on his behalf. I have included a copy of this email from the Registrar-General below, for the inter-est of all our members.

    (Continued from page 7)

-----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2001 6:26 AM To: [email protected] Subject: BDM Fees 3357 Dear Bruce Mathers On behalf of the Honourable George Hawkins, Minister for Internal Affairs, thank you for your email concerning changes to Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) fees. The Minister appreciates that this is an important issue for you, and has asked me to reply to you directly. You have expressed your concern about the increase in the fee for a micrographic printout. The department acknowl-edges the increase is significant. The new fee covers the cost of providing this service now and also makes some con-tribution towards new products and services. A micrographic is a full printout of a birth, death or mar-riage registration record. It may be copied from a paper based record, a microfilm record, or from one of the images that are currently being captured as we convert paper based records to electronic formats. Over recent years the major-ity of printouts have been sourced from the microfilm re-cords, hence the term micrographic. The fee for a micrographic printout has not increased since 1995. When the fee was set in 1995 the actual cost of pro-

  • PAGE 9 TE REO

viding the micrographic was not reflected in the fee charged to customers, as overhead and other costs were not fully covered by the fee at that time. The new fee of $30 covers not only the cost of producing a printout of the record, but also the costs of holding and accessing the records. Producing a printout is not simply a matter of pushing a button. Staff are involved in handling the incoming request and loading it into the document tracking system, processing the request against the record database, checking that the correct record is being released and that the release is appropriate, issuing or mailing the product, and closing off the order in the tracking system. Other costs include items such as rent, utilities, printing, stationery and customer service costs. I am sorry that you feel your hobby of genealogical research has become too expensive for you to carry on with at this time. I understand that genealogy is very important to you. I am confident that the new products and services we are developing, such as on-line access to the BDM indexes, will go some way to making it possible for you to pursue your interest again in the near future. On-line access should become available in the next 12 to 18 months. If you have any further enquiries please contact us again on 64 4 4748000. Yours sincerely Brian Clarke Registrar-General Births, Deaths and Marriages

I must confess to being a little per-plexed by the fact that we are getting down to the nuts-and-bolts of record keeping when power, water, gas (“utilities) and rent are being specifi-cally calculated factors at Central Reg-istry in considering the production costs of Certificates and Photocopies.

As my cousin so rightly pointed out recently, the Government are obliged to keep these records anyway.

A point someone else made to Brenda - and very valid, I think. On-line data will have been transcribed and there-fore subject to error. You could not

    (Continued on page 10)

  • PAGE 10 TE REO

really call it a primary source.

I can only urge all of our members to please consider writing to the Minister of Internal Affairs to let him know ex-actly the impact these huge increases have had on our hobby – you may feel that your ‘one’ opinion will have no effect, but it only takes ‘one’ point to

win a game, ‘one’ vote to win an elec-tion and if we can show a united front, perhaps your ‘one’ letter may tip the scales back in our favour!!

    (Continued from page 9)

On to more positive matters, we would like to thank all those members who have sent messages of support and encouragement after receiving their first issue of the new look MIG news-letter – your positive messages have been a great reassurance. Many thanks also to the member who sent our group a generous donation after receiving Te Reo.

I am also excited to report that both Convenor Colleen PETRICEVICH and Secretary Brenda JOYCE have ad-vised me that they have been receiving messages from people since their re-search names went on the MIG web-site – Brenda in particular has made contact with a family member, which is excellent news.

    CONVENOR’S REPORT

Thank you Bruce and Harete for a great magazine in August; it was easy to read and was full of information. Thank you also to all the contributors, without you the editors’ job would be more difficult. We have purchased another helping aid for us to use to trace our tipuna (ancestors). This is a booklet, a Supplement to the New Zealand Gazette of Thursday August 11th 1892 and is a list of Trustees under Maori Real Estate Management Acts 1867 and 1877. It lists the name of the trustee, with name, sex, and age, of persons “Under disability” (mostly underage) and the lands in respect of which Trustees are appointed. I am indexing the list at the moment and when I have completed it, I will give the book to the NZSG library. I will keep you posted as to progress. I hope you are sending Brenda your names for the web site. I have heard from two people since my names went up so people are reading our page. Some people have written in to borrow the CD ROM Iwi Index and He Toto by John STEEDMAN. Both of these items are in the New Zealand section of the library, but, while the new premises are being altered and all the books from the

libraries are coming in to the Centre, there is no borrowing. Please be patient and next year we will have this wonderful resource in Panmure, Auckland. If you wish to receive the newsletter by post you will still need to send Brenda JOYCE, 17 Peterhouse St. Tawa, Wellington 6006, four A5 envelopes with .90¢ stamps on each. MIG SUBSCRIPTIONS

Members are reminded that as from the 1st November 2001 membership of the Maori Interest Group is now FREE to all financial members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. This was decided at the MIG AGM on the 4th June 2001 as held in New Ply-mouth. Therefore, NO Membership Renewal/Application forms will be included with this newsletter (or will be available online). Only those NZSG members supplying four (4) A5 size self-addressed envelopes with .90¢ stamps on each envelope will receive hardcop-ies of Te Reo. For those members running Microsoft® Word (Office 2000 etc), can you please advise the MIG Secretary who can then send you Te Reo via email as a document attachment. But please be prepared, it will take several minutes to download if you wish to receive an electronic version of the MIG newslet-

    ter in a format similar to the hardcop-ies. Alternatively, the newsletter will still be available online through the MIG web site;

    http://mywebpage.netscape.com/maoripage/index.htm

Although I am not very happy with the web page version of Te Reo at this time and I will endeavour to work on a better-looking web format of the news-letter sometime in the future. E-mail the MIG Secretary at; [email protected] if you are prepared to have the newsletter sent to you as an email attachment.

    When sending snail-mail to officers of the MIG, always quote your NZSG Member-ship Number and include a LARGE Stamped Self-Ad d r e s s e d E n ve l o p e [SSAE] with your letter if a reply is expected.

    WHERE TO WRITE : MIG

At this stage, “All Correspondence [is] to be addressed to the [MIG] Sec-retary.” As it has been decided that Brenda will coordinate all Maori Interest Group correspondence so that we do not have mail heading in all directions within our group. Brenda will then arrange for any news-letter items and members’ interests to be forwarded (emailed) on to my-self for inclusion in the next available issue of Te Reo.

As with any research interests, please contact the MIG member directly for further information on their particular whakapapa/research queries.

The addresses which appear within the front cover of Te Reo are pro-vided as a courtesy only – members have a reasonable expectation to know who and where their executive committee is and as not all mem-bers have access to the Internet, it should not be assumed that E-mail addresses alone would suffice.

Our group Secretary will gratefully accept all and any contributions for the newsletter. I hope this adequately explains the most unusual situa-tion our little group finds itself, with an editor in Australia. BM

    IWI CD

The Iwi CD kindly donated to our group by a member is now with us. Colleen is setting up a system so MIG members can write in for a ‘look-up’. Further details will be available after the new NZSG Research Centre in Panmure (Auckland) is formerly opened by the Governor-General in late February.

    DO THE RIGHT THING!

Even if you cannot help another re-searcher and/or you don’t appear to be related, do the right thing and at least acknowledge their letter – there is nothing more frustrating than waiting in excited anticipation for a reply from possible kin which never arrives. Some people also seem to forget that there is no ‘magic tree’ in the bottom of the garden, which miraculously grows Photocopies and Postage Stamps – these things cost money!

E-mail etiquette is also something to be desired these days… something as simple as a “Hi” at the start and “Thanks” at the end will surprisingly work wonders as far as I am con-cerned. I recently received an Email query through my personal web page; there was no introduction, no hint of an attempt to reciprocate information and no mention of covering any expenses that may be incurred (not that have

ever charged anyone or accepted pay-ment for my information anyway) and the message actually said, “I am inter-ested in all of your information on this surname.” This person was actually interested in my MATHERS surname, at a rough guesstimate this involved at least $80.00¢ in basic photocopying, let alone photo reprints, miscellaneous photocopies and postage etc.

I know we all lead busy lives and an email straight to be point is a time saver, but there is also no need to be impersonal (rude!). Needless to say, with not even a “thanks” at the end of the message, this person has a long wait to hear from me!

Treat others as you wish to be treated, common courtesy never killed anyone, a simple reply to a polite request is greatly appreciated, silence is being inconsiderate and bluntness is just being ignorant! And not using a sup-plied SSAE is a big no, no! But don’t forget to include your SSAE either.

RESEARCHING IN THE BAY OF ISLANDS OR

    THE HOKIANGA

The families I am researching were living in the Hokianga and the Bay of Islands in the nineteenth century. Here are some books that I have found most helpful and that I can recommend as they include lots of names and stories of the per-sonalities of the time in these areas of New Zealand. ‘I have named it the Bay of Islands’ and ‘Hokianga’, both by Jack Lee. The former includes extensive whaka-papa, which you could find helpful. ‘Of Captains, Colonists and Convicts’ by Des-mond F Price has much information about the Cook and Williams families who both married into Maori families.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The Maori Interest Group is officially seven years old on the 3rd Decem-ber 2001– the MIG was ratified at the NZSG Council Meeting on the 3rd December 1994. Although the group is actually a few months older than that, interest in the formation of the Maori Interest Group was mentioned in the Sept/Oct 1993 issue of The New Zealand Genealogist and the first newsletter was produced by joint coordinators Lynne RICHARDS and the late Julie BARLOW on the 1st November 1993.

    CHRISTMAS HANGI

Undeniably, Christmas is a very busy and sometimes-stressful time of the year and understandably most people put their research aside until after the holidays and for when things have returned to ‘normal’. But Christmas is also the time when we get together with friends and “family”… family we now have at our fingertips to ask ques-

tions of and to fill in a few more gaps in the family tree, while we enjoy their company and relax savouring the last of the Christmas Hangi.

Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, site owners of www.culture.co.nz have kindly given us the use of the below Hangi guide-lines.

Rocks - Preferably not sandstone styled rock as this will explode in the fire. Use volcanic rock. Some people use irons as well however these can tend to burn the Hangi and don't hold heat as long as rocks do. 2) Steel Bas-kets - Steel bread crates can be used, even steel chicken wire can be used to wrap the food and placed on the rocks. 3) 6-7 Potato Sacks - Any type of cloth styled potato or sugar sacks (If you have access to Banana leaves, use them as well. 4) W h i t e B e d Sheets - Prefer-able mutton cloth but bed sheets will do. 5) Water Hose. 6) 3 Shov-els. 7) 2 Steel Garden Rakes. 8) 44 gal Drum - This is used to soak the sacks overnight. 9) Tin Foil - Use this to hold food that may easily slip through the crates. 10) Oven Bags. 11) News-paper. 12) Firewood - A variety of small to large slow burning wood. Enough to keep a fire going for at least 2 hours. Don't use treated wood!!! Food List. Most common food in the Hangi are – Pork – Mutton – Chicken – Cabbage – Kumara – Pumpkin - Bread Stuffing - Steam Pudding. Cooking Directions: Food Preparation, Usually most of the preparation is done the night before so that everything is ready for the morning lighting of the Hangi. However if you don't have enough large pots to hold the peeled vegeta-bles in (must be left soaking in water) then peel them and prepare them in

the morning. Placing the food in the correct order in the baskets is crucial, as everything will be cooking at the same time. So place the large roast meat on the bottom of the baskets with chicken on top of that. Put the pota-toes and kumara on next and cabbage quarters to fill in any gaps. Finally place the stuffing in an oven bag or mutton cloth on top. Salt Ground Preparation Use your basket size as a measurement to size up the hole you need to dig. Make the hole a bit bigger

than your basket size so you can tuck the sacks and mutton cloth down the side. The hole doesn't have to be very deep, probably just enough for the rocks and about a third the depth of you crate. Some people differ in

this next part as to preference but most Maori build the fire over the hole and others build the fire on the side of the hole. We will explain the fire over the hole technique in this site. Now that you have dug your hole, you need to fill the hole with screwed-up newspa-per, as this will be used in the morning to ignite the fire. Next place the small kindling wood on top of the paper and build a typical fire placing bigger and bigger pieces criss-crossing by layer until all the wood is used. Then stack the rocks on top of the wood. Other Preparation Cut the sacks open down the two sides so that they open up to their full length and place in a full 44

gal drum of water to soak overnight. Place mutton cloth or sheets in the drum as well. Place a protective cover over the fire-stack to keep the over-night dew off to ensure a dry start in the morning and then you are ready to roll. The Next Day The whole process from the fire to the completing of the cooking will take about 6 hours. So pace your day out so that the Hangi will be ready for when you need it so it stays hot. Lighting the Fire Take a rolled up piece of newspaper and light the screwed up newspaper underneath the fire-stack. Allow to burn until all the wood is embers in the hole. This should take about 1½ - 2 hours. Use the shovels to reposition any rocks that fall out of the fire. The rocks should burn almost white hot. Once the fire has burned down, use the shovels and rakes to scoop out any smoking em-bers so that there is only rocks left in the hole. Rake the burning embers away and dowse with the hose. Any ashes left floating around can be dissi-pated by a quick spray of the hose on the rocks. Putting Down the Hangi Flatten out the rocks as much as pos-sible and place the basket on the stones. Get the wet mutton cloths or sheets and lay them over the basket allowing the edges to go down the sides of the hole. Immediately before doing this though you need to give the stones and basket a quick spray with the hose to create some steam, then immediately place the cloths over-top.

On top of these cloths, place a potato. This is used as a kind of indicator for later to tell you whether everything is cooked. Place the wet sacks on this, layering them as to cover the basket but dot allow them to go down the side of the basket so that they lay on the top of the ground. Place the dirt on top of this covering the entire area and sealing off any places where steam is escaping. The cooking time for one basket is around 2½ - 3hours but it doesn't hurt to leave it in for 3½ 4hours. It is quite difficult to overcook a Hangi as the longer it is in the ground the more the rocks cool (a bit different to an oven which stays constant in temperature). Pulling out the Hangi Uncover dirt from the sacks and peel back the sacks being careful not to spill any dirt into the basket. Check the potato to see if it is cooked. Remove the cloth and use the sacks as protec-tion to hold the hot basket. Take to the kitchen and serve. I remember as a kid sitting outside by the hole (Umu) after the Hangi had been taken away, eating the remaining meat from off the top of the rocks with the rest of the workers.
