From The Principal...

Tena koutou katoa Thursday 15th May 2014 Term 2, Week 2

A big thanks to the staff and families of Te Ranga School as I have had a great first couple of weeks of being the principal here. I immediately noticed how friendly and welcoming this community is and have been struck by parents’ generosity. In our first week back at school we received baking, coffee supplies and resources for the students. I am also enjoying having two of my own children at school, although I am not so sure they appreciate me checking their books and homework more thoroughly than I did in the past!!

I hope everyone enjoyed the first weekend of winter sports. Te Ranga entered a netball team for the first time in 16 years and played commendably. It was a great turnout of staff and parents to watch. With some shooting practice under our belt, the team looks to have a positive future. Thanks to Jason Ward for supplying our balls, other parents help with coaching and Eileen Hansen’s expert managerial skills. The school hockey teams start this week-end - I would also like to wish them well.

It is a busy term coming up with senior camp, Trash to Fash, rippa rugby and the Police Education show coming to school. I believe it is very important that families feel connected to the school and feel comfortable to contact teachers or myself. Please don’t hesitate to approach us about concerns or to pass on positive feedback.

Kind regards,

Brendan Wilson Principal

Thank You! Big thanks to Jason Ward who kindly donated netballs for our new netball team to practice with!

Big thanks also to Te Puke Rotary for coming up to school last week and supplying each of our Year 4’s with a beautiful dictionary each. Our guests shared a little about the work of Rotary, named the dictionaries and had a look at how they may assist us with any pool upgrades.

THE HOUSE SHOOK

A holiday recount By Fraser Pugh

The house shook, the wind battered the 100 year old house. I lay awake in bed with my Marmot sleeping bag wrapped around me, I gazed up at the tall ceiling and walls, looking at all the Japanese artefacts scattered all over the flowery wall paper. I wondered if it would ever end, I checked my watch, the small orange light flicked on 6:00 then off. I got out of bed and trudged tiredly down the wooden floor hallway into my parent’s room. They were up on their phones looking at the weather. I sat down on their bed, then darkness. The only lights were my parent’s phones which looked like ghosts in the dark room. “I’ll call Mike’’ [the person who owns the house] said Dad. I thumbed along the dark hallway to my room, I rummaged through my bag and pulled out my Kathmandu headlamp. I switched on the two small LEDs and found my way to the toilet. While I was going I heard muffled words of the conversation over the rain. ‘’Hi Mike…power out…ok.’’ We waited for another 2 hours before the power came back on then Mum made a hot chocolate and a big plate of bacon, eggs and tomatoes.
