POMPALLIER CATHOLIC COLLEGE Te Kāreti Katorika o Pomapārie learning excellence for lifeNewsletter 15: 29 September, 2017 VISION STATEMENT Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”. We have only three weeks of formal schooling to go for our senior students. In early November the senior students will commence their study break for external exams. During the next two weeks of holiday the senior students should be using some of this time to revise work and to further prepare for exams. They will have their recent school exam papers retuned to them by now, so that should provide them with some direction for further study. The students have an abundance of resources on- line to use for revision purposes. A few useful sites are: Go to: http://www.studyit.org.nz/ and look at Study and Exam Advice”. Go to: https://www.tki.org.nz/ and then look at Learning Areas”. Teachers have also created websites which students can readily access for further study. Students should know how to access these via their school google applications. Our most basic goal is to get all students to Level 2 NCEA before they leave school. Currently we have 97% of our school leavers with NCEA Level 2. The figure for Northland is 80% and that leaves a lot of students disadvantaged. Twenty percent, or 1 in 5, do not have sufficient qualifications to undertake tertiary study and that makes their future prospects rather bleak. It would be wonderful to have the Northland figure higher and that is something we are trying to enhance via our participation in a Community of Learning. BUILDING LEVY 2018 (VOLUNTARY) There are some buildings at our College which are not supported by Government funding, and we cannot use Government money to address the repairs and maintenance of such buildings. The Chapel is our most significant building in this category and it needs a replacement roof and new guttering to stop leaks. We have already used voluntary labour to paint the inside of the Chapel and to give it a good tidy-up, and now we need to address the outside. Other buildings and facilities do receive Government funding, but almost all of this goes into the common fund for Catholic schools in the Auckland Diocese. The money is then spread around all schools according to perceived need. In the next few years we would like to supplement some other existing student facilities around the school. The Canteen needs to be developed into an area which provides more sheltered seating for students and a wider menu. The Hall needs to be painted and a new sound system, better lighting, and a new stage are required. We would like to cover the netball courts with artificial turf to enable a greater range of sports and activities to be available for our students. We would also like to enhance the Year 7/8 classrooms beyond what will be provided by the Catholic Property Office. All of these projects, and many others, cost money, so the Board of Trustees is introducing a building levy in 2018. All monies collected will be held in trust by Bishop Pat under the Colleges name. We will need approval from him before we use any of the money at our College. This arrangement is to ensure that we dont build or develop anything that is contrary to the agreed development plans for the College, and to make sure that the money does not get directed towards non-property development activities. The levy will be $30.00 per student per year, commencing 2018. THOSE BUSES The College does not fund or control the operation of school buses. They are provided by the Government in accordance with their regulations relating to school transport. The Ministry of Education (MOE) co-ordinates this activity. While the MOE is responsive to our requests and suggestions, they cannot operate outside of the Government regulations. Any change in the provision of school transport therefore arises from decisions made within the MOE and not at the College. We convey their decisions to parents as required. VISION STATEMENT

Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where

all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.

The students have an abundance of resources on-line to use for revision purposes. A few useful sites are:

Go to: http://www.studyit.org.nz/ and look at “Study and Exam Advice”.

Go to: https://www.tki.org.nz/ and then look at “Learning Areas”.

BUILDING LEVY 2018 (VOLUNTARY)

There are some buildings at our College which are not supported by Government funding, and we cannot use Government money to address the repairs and maintenance of such buildings.

This arrangement is to ensure that we don’t build or develop anything that is contrary to the agreed development plans for the College, and to make sure that the money does not get directed towards non-property development activities.

The levy will be $30.00 per student per year, commencing 2018.

THOSE BUSES

The College does not fund or control the operation of school buses.

STUDENT LATENESS

Student lateness continues to be an issue, with a significant number of students continuing to arrive at the College well after the bell has rung. Our school day begins with Whānau Class, so punctuality is especially important in the morning, as a lot of information is given out during this time.

The first bell is at 8.40am and all students are expected to be at school by then. Your assistance with ensuring your child is at school on time is appreciated.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION

On Tuesday 26th September, we had two members of the Winitana family here from Te Whare Ahorangi, who are based out of Rotorua. All our Year 10 students were involved in this Mau Rākau workshop.

They were taught how to be present in the four altars; mind, body, heart and soul, in order to perform with a rākau.

Feedback on the day was very positive and students thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
