Herlihy drives away with top New Year’s honour BY COLIN THORSEN TONY HERLIHY driving the Barry Purdon trained Pembrook Benny in the Interdominion Metro Harness at Alexandra Park last year. NZ HERALD PHOTO I actually saw a smile on his face that I’d never seen before, it was amazing, you had to be there to witness it. DIANE JONES sister of Tony Herlihy (pictured) The past year just got better and better for legendary trotting driver/ trainer Tony Herlihy made a Member of the New Zealand Order Of Merit in the New Year’s honour list. The honour — one of the highest awards ever given to a member of the harness racing industry capped another stunningly success- ful year in which the former Te Awamutu youngster became New Zealand’s first driver to nail 3000 winners. Horses, training and driving and the passion and energy of the sport of harness racing flows through the veins of Herlihy, who was born in Te Awamutu in 1958 and grew up here. No-one is more proud of him than his sister Diane Jones of Te Awa- mutu, who was at Alexandra Park to witness his 3000th winning drive. ‘‘Tony made us wait a while for the magic moment. ‘‘I travelled up to Auckland three weeks in a row to see him reach the milestone.’’ But Jones says the return treks up to the City of Sails were well worthwhile. ‘‘I actually saw a smile on his face that I’d never seen before, it was amazing, you had to be there to witness it. ‘‘Since his New Year’s honours, he’s become ‘The Man’ at the races his daughter reckons she’s never seen so many young people coming up and shaking his hand. ‘‘The younger set and his workers seem to idolise him. They look up to him, they think he is marvellous.’’ Herlihy was quoted as saying: ‘‘You never think you are going to be asked to accept something like this but the response I’ve had has been great. I’ve received so many texts and phone calls from people, I suppose it’s recognition for the industry as well, so I was honoured to accept it.’’ Herlihy recorded his 3000th win on one of Sandy Yarndley’s syndi- cate fillies, Veste. The local harness breeder says Herlihy’s New Year’s award is a case of another Te Awamutu boy who has made good. ‘‘The award is richly deserved, Tony’s done a great job for the industry and has represented New Zealand with distinction several times.’’ Mrs Jones recalls her uncle, Arnie Gadsby, training horses in Auckland and, from the age of 10, Tony Herlihy would visit to help out. ‘‘He learned a lot from uncle Arnie, as well as the several other trainers he worked for after leaving school aged 15.’’ He became a freelance driver and also had a full time job employed by Barry and Roy Purdon for many years. He married Roy’s daughter, Suz- anne Purdon, and in 1990 they bought a property at Ardmore. Herlihy has been honoured with some notable awards including induction into the Te Awamutu Walk of Fame in 2007, induction into the Interdominion Hall of Fame for driving achievements in the transtasman series, but has been most successful in the Trotting Grand Final recording four victories with Diamond Field (1994), Pride Of Petite (1997), Buster Hanover (1998) and Delft (2006). The one big race that does not appear on Herlihy’s roll of honour at this stage is the Interdominion Pacing Final. The closest he has come to winning an Inter Dominion Pacing Grand Final in more than a dozen appearances was runner-up with Chokin in 1995. His CV nonetheless makes impressive reading, including New Zealand Cup wins with Luxury Liner (l988), Christopher Vance (1991) and Chokin (1993), as well as winning an impressive eight Auck- land Cups with Comedy Lad (1986), Luxury Liner (1987, 1988), Christo- pher Vance (1991), Chokin (1993, 1994), Sharp and Telford (1996) and Gotta Go Cullen (2008). Other top Australian-based vic- tories included three Miracle Mile Pacing Invitational’s with Christo- pher Vance (1991) and Chokin (1993, 1994). He also scored in the Victoria Derby in 2001 with Rare Gem and again in 2003 with Bella’s Boy, which he co-owned with John Season. In his 300th winning victory speech, Herlihy commented that when you have a long career and are lucky enough to get to that number of wins, you have to thank a lot of people. ‘‘So many trainers have put me on horses and owners who have supported me. And there are all the people who work with the horses who do their part too.’’ He paid special tribute to his family, wife Suzanne and the kids. ‘‘They have been wonderful and supported me all the time, I couldn’t have had this career without them.’’

YOUR LETTERS

Praise for councillor’s viewI have never previously commented on

readers’ letters in the Courier, but in thiscase I find I must support Vern Wilson onhis views concerning the change of policyby the Editor regarding councillorscommenting on ‘public’ meetings.

How totally arrogant of the Editor tostate his opinion (in his comments toVern’s letter) and apparently arbitrarilybar councillors comments, and then tohave the unmitigated gall to state ‘‘Ibelieve in freedom of speech’’, obviouslyonly when it suits you.

Vern may be a councillor but he is alsoa member of the public and where he is

commenting on open source informationand it is not confidential, I for one wouldlike to hear it, particularly as having beenresponsible for taking minutes I knowhow much content is left out.

I would be interested to know howmany other readers see this as an attemptto gag outspoken councillors that don’t fitin with the Editor’s opinions, and hisviews on what constitutes freedom ofspeech, I respect the right of the Editor toexpress an opinion, but not to deny thesame right to others for what seems likean editorial whim, or maybe somethingmore sinister?.

The Editor will of course say ‘‘butthat’s why we set up the CouncillorForum’’, but as he will select issues anddecide on what is open for debate I don’tsee much democracy or freedom of speechthere either.

RICHARD BEARD

Editor’s note: Please be clear that I didnot say that Mr Wilson’s opinionsdon’t fit in with my opinions. That isnot the reason for my policy. Also notethat I have invited the public tosuggest topics for the CouncillorForum.

Cr Wilson preparedto ‘speak his mind’

I agree with Cr Vern Wilson regard-ing his letter to the Courier on January11.

He is the only councillor prepared tostand up and speak his mind.

His letters to the newspaper havebeen truthful.

The ratepayers have a right to knowwhat is going on.

I disagree with the editor DeanTaylor that once a Councillor has votedthey have a collective responsibility toaccept the decision — even if theyopposed it during discussion.

Has the new editor become a puppetunder the mayor’s dictatorship alongwith most other councillors?

To prove that this hasn’t happened

let Cr Wilson carry on writing his ownletters.

We don’t want half reports like thelast one on the Cambridge swimmingpool which was written by council staffas there was no Courier reporter thereand what council reported was veryincomplete compared to the CambridgeEdition report.

I attended that extraordinary meet-ing on December 6 so I know what I amtalking about.

The Courier needs to open its eyesand report all the facts, even if theeditor disapproves.

As he has stated, he believes infreedom of speech. Let’s see some proof.

MALCOLM HUME

Informingratepayers

I agree with Vern Wilson and hiscomments regarding accepting lettersfrom elected members about what issaid and by whom at council meetings.

As a ratepayer I want to know thesethings so I know who is for me and whois against me on any topic which comesbefore council.

This way I can determine whom I willor will not vote for in future elections.

I do not know what the Councillors’Forum will produce so will wait and see.

In the meantime I urge the Editor tocontinue to allow comments from coun-cillors as has been the practice in thepast.

This is generally the only way rate-payers can be kept informed of what isbeing discussed at council meetings.

Sergii goes one betterwith Australasian title

TC170112SP03

AUSTRALASIA’S top Holden technician Sergii Zablotskyi receives his trophy and congratulations fromHolden New Zealand managing director Jeff Murray (left) and general manager sales and after salesTerry McEwan.

Last year Rosetown Holdentechnician Sergii Zablotskyi wasthe top Kiwi in a competition ofautomotive engineering skills inAustralia.

His bosses were rapt theirtechnician gave the Aussies arun for their money and finishedfourth overall in theAustralasian event.

This year Mr Zablotskyi dideven better — taking the top spotoverall.

The event is run by theHolder dealer TechniciansGuild.

Over 20 years ago Holdenidentified a need that could keepHolden Technicians and mech-anics up to date and totallyconversant with the then rapidlyevolving technologies incorpor-ated into their vehicles.

Instructor and web-basedtraining solutions to whichHolden is heavily committed to

provide part of the solution. What remained was a need to

motivate and mentor techni-cians to passionately envelopethemselves in the rapidly evolv-ing technologies in time withvehicle releases to market.

The solution that evolved isthe Holden Technicians Guild.

All Holden technicians inAustralia and New Zealand areannually invited to enroll andparticipate in the guild whichpublishes a series of technicalpublications each year.

In conjunction with these aseries of questionnaires andregional examinations are heldcumulating in the best of eachregion gaining spots in a grandfinal held in Melbourne eachNovember.

Mr Zablotskyi won the 2011event, earning a trip back toAustralia for a V8 DrivingExperience with a V8 Supercar

driver at the Holden DrivingCentre.

Rosetown Holden owner StuTervit says the story of MrZablotskyi’s success is fascinat-ing.

Born in the Ukraine where hehad worked in two dealershipsspecialising in American cars,he came to New Zealand in 2006.

His mother-in-lawapproached the company’s ser-vice manager about a job oppor-tunity, and although MrZablotskyi did not have a firmgrasp of English, his referencespointed to a degree of skill as amechanic and with electronics.

Mr Sharp put Mr Zablotskyito the test and reported back tohis boss — ‘he blew me awaywith his skills’.

Mr Zablotskyi was hired andhas flourished to now beregarded as the best Holdentechnician in Australasia.

Wet end to year matches startWeather-wise 2011 finished in

much the same way as it started —wet.

Resident weather watcher PaulHobbs recorded 218mm of rain inTe Awamutu in December, a 20year high.

It was the second wettestmonth of the year — the wettestbeing January with 269mm.

February then produced theleast rain, just 30mm.

To complete the unusual pat-tern August, traditionally one ofthe wettest months with averagerainfall of 138mm over the past 21years, produced just 33mm in 2011.

Total rain for the year was1585mm, making it the secondwettest in 21 years behind 1996’s

1702mm.Unlike 1996, were it rained the

most days (138), 2011 had just 110days of rain, which is below theaverage of 115. But December wasalso hot, with temperatures sel-dom dipping below 20degC.

Mr Hobbs says the patternappears to reflect the La Ninacondition in the Western Pacific.

Top vegie garden prize for Carol

TC170112DT01

GREEN fingered Carol Jane Oates in her award winning vegetablegarden.

A little piece of a Te Awamutubackyard has been judged as one ofthe top three vegetable gardens inNew Zealand by Yates.

Carol Jane Oates confesses sheis passionate about gardening andshe has entered the Yates VegieGrowing Challenge all three timesit has been run.

The event runs twice per year, once for a Spring garden and oncefor an Autumn garden.

Ms Oates has previously won aencouragement prize, but in the2011 Spring Challenge she was oneof the three major prizewinners.

She received her $1000 PrezzyCard last week and says she mayjust use it to treat herself tosomething special.

She is also in no doubt thatsome of the winnings will find itsway back into her vegie garden.

To be eligible for the competi-tion, members of the Yates GardenClub must enter and then post ablog at least once per fortnight onthe progress of their garden.

Yates recommend a selection ofvarieties to choose from and theymust all be grown from seed.

Ms Oates says she usually justplants everything on the list andrelishes the challenge of growingnew varieties.

She subscribes to the full Yatessystem for best results.

Another key is getting outsideevery day and doing a little bit tokeep everything going.

Ms Oates grows much morethan she needs, even on her smallproperty, and enjoys sharing withfriends and family.

She encourages everyone togive it a go and says the results areworthwhile.

‘‘The vegetables taste betterthan bought ones, they are fresherand there is a lot of satisfactionand pleasure knowing you grewyour own food,’’ she says.

Ms Oates also says gardening is

a great hobby, especially forpeople like her who spend much oftheir working day indoors.

Paper targets obesity, diabetes

A—161107splobes

A British advert from the National Obesity Forum. It uses the line: Theeating habits you give your children can last a lifetime. FILE/PHOTO

The intense marketing of fastfood is one of the reasons whyobesity and type 2 diabetes havegrown, according to a discussionpaper issued by Waikato DistrictHealth Board’s PopulationHealth service.

The paper Obesity, diabetesand fast food — the impact ofmarketing to children, looks ath o w m o d e r n ‘ o b e s o g e n i c ’environments including car-based urban design, sedentaryjobs and passive forms of recrea-t i o n p r o m o t e t h e o v e r -consumption of food and drinksand limit opportunities forphysical activity.

‘‘The aim is to get communi-ties and individuals thinkinghow they can change to a health-ier environment — for the sakeof their chi ldren’s futurehealth,’’ says the paper’s authorNick Chester, Population Healthpolicy analyst.

The marketing of energy-dense, nutrient-poor food to chil-dren is of particular concern.Although obesity prevalence inchildren has remained relativelysteady in recent years, one infive New Zealand children areoverweight, and one in twelveare obese. Children who areobese are more likely to remainobese into adulthood, adding tothe likelihood of future ill healthand the cost of treatment.

The 2006/07 Health Surveyfound that 70 per cent of childrenbetween the ages of two and 14years ate fast food at least once aweek, 14% ate fast food twice aweek and 7 per cent ate it threeor more times a week. Thesefigures suggest that the con-sumption of fast food is a com-mon and well established pas-time for the majority of NewZealand children.

Within the Waikato region,

there are over 70 fast food chainoutlets operating.

Many other takeaway foodoutlets operate in all areas; dair-

ies, supermarkets and petrolstations all sell a wide variety ofunhealthy food.

Promotion of energy-dense,

nutrient-poor food has reachedalmost saturation levels throughconventional advertising andindirect marketing within localcommunities such as sponsor-ship.

The paper presents a numberof interventions that mayaddress concerns with market-ing, at both a policy level andalso at a local level throughhealth promotion, education andcommunity partnerships.

Current Waikato programmesinclude:

● NourishMEnt is a pro-gramme providing informationto community health workers onobesity and type 2 diabetes, andhow diet and exercise plays arole in these diseases. The pro-gramme discusses barriers togood nutrition and how thesecan be overcome in a local com-munity.

● Kai @ the Right Price is anestablished intervention withthe aim of increasing consump-tion of fresh fruit and vegetables. This is through the provision ofitems at a lower price. This hasbeen a successful interventionand has been used in manylocations within the region.

Project Energize is a projectwithin Waikato primary schoolst o i m p r o v e n u t r i t i o n a n dincrease physical activity ofchildren. The project began in2005 and is funded by WaikatoDistrict Health Board. Partnersin the project include Sport Wai-kato and AUT University, Uni-versity of Waikato, WaikatoInstitute of Technology, Sportand Recreation NZ, New ZealandHeart Foundation. A total of44,000 primary and intermediateschoolchildren are now part ofProject Energize through 244Waikato schools. A number ofevaluations have taken place on

the project, the latest being inMarch-April 2011. This showedfewer children were obese, morewere physically active and had abetter understanding of healthyeating than during the 2006assessment.

The Population Health ser-vice says affected groups need tolook at what initiatives will bemost valuable for them, and howthey can use these to best effect.‘‘Population Health service willlook to work with other agenciessuch as Sport Waikato to providesupport and advice in such situa-tions,’’ Mr Chester said.

The next stage will be to looka t h o w t h e i s s u e c a n b eaddressed in the Waikato region, and how Population Health canprovide information and adviceto schools or communities whohave concerns relating to theissues raised in the discussionpaper. This will begin early thisyear.

The discussion paper can beaccessed on Waikato DHB’sw e b s i t e a t :www.waikatodhb.health.nz/populationhealth

■ FACTS■ Obesity prevalence has risen inNew Zealand from 16.6 per cent ofmales and 20.6 per cent of femalesin 1997 to 24.8 per cent of malesand 26 per cent of females in2006/07. One in five New Zealandchildren are overweight and one in12 are obese.■ Obesity is the result of a numberof factors including genetics, butthe rapid increase in the prevalenceof obesity suggests that geneticsare unlikely to be the main cause ofthe epidemic.■ There is a disproportionateburden of obesity and diabetes inMaori and Pacific populations, andthose living in more deprived areas.

The film premiered in Christ-church as part of the New Zea-land International Film Festivaland was labelled ‘pick of the fest’by festival organisers.

The film is directed byCristobal Araus Lobos and starsOwen Black and Will Hall as

Duncan wants the land at anycost and with the help of histhuggish under-achieving sonMex tries to drive Stan away.

But for the first time in his lifeStan has something worth fight-

The appearance of the beauti-ful and mysterious Maria(Miriama Smith) into this mascu-line environment raises thestakes even higher.

As we hurtle toward the finalthrilling climax the true nature ofthe conflict is revealed: this is notabout the land, this is a primalbattle between men for power anddominance.

At its core Netherwood is aportrayal of masculinity at itsrawest when pride and status areat stake.

Waikato sevensmanager

Waikato sevensmanager David Foxsingled out TeAwamutu’s RyanMeacheam and captainStephen Ketu as histeam’s two best playersat the national tourna-ment.

Fox says some of hisplayers were inconsol-able after the gut-wrenching 22-17 semi-final loss, in extra time,to Auckland at sunnyQueenstown — ‘‘Theyhad put everything intoit.’’.

Waikato drew levelat 17-all with a longrange Tim Mikkelsontry just as the fulltimehooter sounded, only tomiss the conversionfrom handy to the posts.

Then, in extra time,Waikato starved theAucklanders of pos-session for the openingthree minutes.

But to the defendingchampion’s credit, assoon as the red, yellowand blacks coughed theball up, theAucklanders seizedtheir opportunity toscore the match winnerthrough Alex Samoa.

‘‘It was a bitter pill toswallow but we couldn’thave asked any morefrom our players, theygave it their all,’’ Foxtold the Courier.

‘‘Luck just didn’t goour way in the end.

‘‘We had to make alot of tackles in bothour games on day twoafter finishing on thetough side of the drawfollowing first day winsover Wellington andNorthland and a nar-row loss to CountiesManukau.’’

Waikato beat NorthHarbour 19-7 in thequarter-finals, whileAuckland accounted forTaranaki 17-12.

Auckland went on tobeat Otago 36-24 in thefinal.

Fox says had Wai-kato gone on to makethe final, Meacheamwould have been anexcellent chance tomake the 30 named totrial this week at MtMaunganui by NewZealand Sevens coachGordon Tietjens.

‘‘The guys who playin that last game of thetournament definitelyget a good shot at selec-tion, it was unfortunatefor the likes of Ryan.’’

Meacheam, a vet-eran of four nationaltournaments, havingfirst played for Waikatoat the 2005 nationals, played every minute ofthe three games on dayone.

‘‘Ryan has becomeour go to man. He’s amore than useful15-a-side club player

but sevens is his game.‘‘He’s an outstand-

ing communicator and

organiser on defence.‘‘We use him as a

sweeper and as a first

receiver because ofthose skills, and he cankick goals to boot.’’

He scored triesagainst both Welling-ton and Northland, aswell as kicking fourfrom four against Well-ington, a brace ofconversions againstNorthland, Countiesand North Harbour, and one conversionagainst Auckland.

Mark Murray (TeAwamutu) made a bigimpact off the bench onday two in gamesagainst North Harbourand Auckland.

Fox says his sup-port play and strengthin the tackle was out-standing. ‘‘He readsthe play well too, andruns good lines to cre-ate holes in thedefence.’’

Murray had solidperformances on dayone starting againstWellington and North-land.

The previous week-end at the MountMaunganui Sevens,Waikato finished daytwo strongly to win theConsolation Cup —beating Bay of Plenty21-12 in the final andCounties Manukau26-5 in the semifinal.

Collapse puts Tim in limboBY COLIN THORSEN

TC170112CT03

HAPPIER TIMES: Tim Gudsell winning the Tour of Sommerville in US.

Te Awamutu profes-sional road cyclist TimGudsell is at the cross-roads of his illustriouscareer after his PureBlack Racing teamfolded last month.

‘‘I’m keeping focusedriding my bike at themoment but I’ll have toreassess the situation ina month’s time,’’ he toldthe Courier.

‘‘As we speak PureBlack Racing doesn’tformally exist.

‘‘They’ve registeredas a New Zealand tradeteam but that doesn’tmean a lot — just a caseof me being able to ridein their colours withoutany pay cheque.’’

Two weeks after get-ting married, Gudsell’slife was thrown into tur-moil when hispioneering Kiwi teamPure Black Racing foldedafter being unable toraise funds to commit toa second year ridingtours in America and

Asia.‘‘Cycling has been my

living for the past seven/eight years. Now that I’mmarried I have a differ-ent outlook on life to

when I was in my early20s — I’ve got otherresponsibilities now.

‘‘I badly need a teamin order to gain thenecessary solid income

but most team spots for2012 have been longdecided.’’

Gudsell says he’s hada few teams offer himspots on the team but

with no salary attachedthat would enable him tosupport himself and hiswife Sarah.

He is currentlychasing new jobs andlooking at other options.

‘‘The timing is theworst thing, there is nota lot out there at thistime of the year.

‘‘Teams have alreadycommitted their budgets. The only way to make itwork on those teams thathave contacted me is toraise private sponsor-ship that would in effectpay my salary.’’

But that is not muchmore than what PureBlack can presentlyoffer the likes of Gudselland his Te AwamutuSports clubmate ShemRodger.

Gudsell says PureBlack are working hardbehind the scenes tryingto salvage something buttime is the issue for itsteam members whoselivelihood depends onbeing involved in a proteam.

Announcement major blow for cyclingNew Zealand cyclists will

lose a valuable pathway tointernational road racing suc-cess if Pure Black Racing isunable to secure sufficientfunding to pursue its plans.

In a statement releasedrecently, Pure Black Racingannounced that a lack of spon-sorship funding has resulted inthem curtailing plans to com-pete in America and Asia in2012.

‘‘It’s heartbreaking for NewZealand cycling that, despite afantastic debut year and greatinvestment from SheppardIndustries (Avanti), PureBlack Racing were unable togenerate the financial supportthat they need,’’ says BikeNZchief executive, KieranTurner.

‘‘Pure Black Racing hasdone a great job of promotingcycling, both in New Zealand

and internationally, especiallyby providing another pathwayfor New Zealand’s aspiringroad cyclists.’’

Cycling is one of NewZealand’s largest recreationalactivities and a sport that hasenjoyed considerable successon the world stage.

‘‘Pure Black Racing pro-vided much more than just amoving billboard. They devel-oped fantastic leadership and

an all-round developmentexperience for its athletes andpartners. It is a shame that thecurrent New Zealand marketdoes not fully understand theworldwide scale of cycling andhow great the reach and returnis compared to other sports.

‘‘BikeNZ is supportive of allcycling endeavours and wehope that Pure Black Racingcan find the support needed tobring its plan back to life.’’

Mulqueen was still ahead atthe three-quarter mark butLatham’s experience and con-ditioning came to the fore with asuperb final 1000m in 1:06 to earnvictory in 4:25.964.

BikeNZ rested a number ofriders to develop some newcombinations before finalisingthe team for next month’s keyworld cup in London and theworld championships in Mel-bourne.

Doobies play Whitianga — win new album

THIS competition is provided by ‘Fill The House Tickets Project’, proudlysupporting families of children with cancer.

Celebrate the mostwelcome and muchanticipated return toour shores of one ofmost popular Californiapop/rock bands of the‘70s, The DoobieBrothers, by picking upa copy of our featuredCD — World GoneCrazy.

Performing at TheWaterways, Whitiangaon Sunday, February 5with The Little RiverBand, The Doobies, asthey are affectionatelyknown, evolved from amellow, post-hippieboogie band to a slick,soul-inflected pop outfitby the end of that dec-ade.

A decade after theirlast studio album Sib-ling Rivalry , theDoobie Brothers re-unite with Ted

Templeman, the pro-ducer of their break-through ‘70’s hits, fortheir current release —World Gone Crazy.

The result is a tightalbum that recalls all oftheir glory days.

The lads are in fineform, writing solidsongs and givingrelaxed, lived-in per-formances, all adding upto a strong album thatsits well with theirsongs of yesteryear.

There’s noseparating the unparal-leled legacy of theDoobie Brothers fromtheir latest effort, whichgrows in unexpecteddirections.

Templeman hassucceeded unquestion-ably in reigniting thespecial chemistry thataudiences have

embraced over the pastfour decades.

Songs such asChateau, World Gone

Crazy, Nobody and FarFrom Home are realcrowd pleasers from thenew CD and often

included in their liveset.

With great hits suchas Listen To The Music,Black Water, ChinaGrove, What A FoolBelieves, Long TrainRunning, Taking It ToThe Streets, Jesus Is JustAlright, Minute By Min-ute and Rockin’ DownThe Highway , The

Doobie Brothers are oneof those enduring world-wide favourites.

Celebrating over 40years in the businessthis year, there doesn’tseem to be any sign ofslowing down for agroup that produced, and still continues toplay one of the mostdiverse and celebrated

catalogues of rockmusic.

■ To be in to win simplyput your name, addressand daytime phonenumber on the back of astandard sized envelope, address it to The DoobieBrothers CD Competitionandmake sure it reachesour office by 5pm, Friday.
