Welcome to the Level 2 Spanish (SP2000) course offered by Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu.

overview of sp2000In this course, you will work up to level 7 (Year 12) of the Spanish curriculum.

You will have the opportunity to gain up to 24 level 2 credits on the National Qualification Framework. The credits you gain will count towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

During this course you will build your communication skills in Spanish by: • listening for understanding, interest and enjoyment

• speaking to be understood by native speakers of the language

• reading for meaning and for appreciation of the language and culture

• writing for a purpose and to be understood.

This course can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence if in a single year you gain 14 or more credits at Merit and/or Excellence within Level 2 Spanish. At least three of these credits must be from externally assessed standards and three from internally assessed standards.

This course is made up of 12 fortnightly resources and six standard assessments packed with the booklets. There are five other assessments for the interacting standard which you have to request from your teacher if you plan to sit this standard.

how this course is delivered SP2000 is a print-based course, with course material and supplementary material accessed from the online teaching and learning environment (OTLE). Dual enrolled students are expected to access material from OTLE. Other enrolled students may request printed materials to be posted, accepting there will be a delay between enrolment and receiving the first posting.

You will receive an email explaining how to log in to OTLE. This email includes a link to set your password if you have not logged into the OTLE before.

You can access OTLE by clicking on www.tekura.school.nz/login. It is recommended that you bookmark this site in your browser. This will take you to a page with links to your courses.

Your username and initial password is your Te Kura student ID number. You will be asked to set a new password when you first log in. organising your studyPlan a regular time to study. Some people learn best from frequent short sessions while others do better with fewer, longer sessions. It is important to have a plan or a timetable and to keep to it.

There is a suggested planner in the back of this guide for you to plan your programme of study. You may wish to consult with your subject teacher to help you decide on your plan.

Getting your study underway is very important. Your first return of work should be two to three weeks after you first received your initial work. If you have any issues returning your work within this time please contact your subject teacher.

resources you need to get goingYou will need:

• a good quality CD player or CD player on your computer for listening

• a ring binder for your vocabulary lists, extra notes or course information

• access to a telephone to contact your teacher if you need help

• access to a computer with broadband internet connection to visit the Te Kura website and Spanish web page, and to explore other Spanish websites or email your teacher and to record your spoken activities on.

Other optional equipment includes: • a bilingual Spanish/English dictionary for reference

• a memory stick.

choosing topics and standardsNZQA advises that a one-year course should lead to 18–20 credits. You may only wish to do some topics. For example, you may want to do only internal standards for this course. You should look carefully at the course outline and make your choices. It is important to consider how well this will meet your learning goals (such as gaining enough credits to achieve your NCEA Level 2, or meeting the entry requirements for your tertiary course or any future study).

To be awarded NCEA Level 2, you will need to gain a minimum of 80 credits at level 2 (or above) including 10 credits for literacy an 10 credits for numeracy. You should discuss your options with your learning advisor and/or your teacher.

self-markingMany assessment activities are self-marked. You’ll find an answer guide towards the back of each booklet. Use these answers to mark your own work and make corrections where necessary.

Self-marking is very important as it gives you instant feedback on how well you understand the ideas, concepts or information that have been covered.

assessmentStudents are required to send in teacher-assessed work. (In SP2000 at Te Kura, students, only need to send in their teacher-assessed work – the workbook and any recordings made.) Teachers return student work with feedback and advice.

Internal assessments for this course are:

• A spoken presentation. This standard involves you preparing and delivering a spoken presentation. You will receive the assessment material with booklet SP2009.

• Interacting using spoken Spanish. Your speaking skills will be assessed from a number of conversations (portfolio) you will have. They include:

– set conversations with your teacher. You have to contact your teacher and request the assessment tasks for booklets SP2001, SP2003, SP2005, SP2007 and SP2009. Secondary dual students access the material through OTLE

or: – one conversation you have with your teacher during the course



or: – one authentic conversation you have during the course such as talking to relatives,

friends, visitors or epals. Please make sure you record these conversations and send the recordings to your teacher.

• Writing a variety of text types. Your writing skills will be assessed from a number of pieces of writing (portfolio) you will submit. They include:

– set tasks which you’ll receive with booklets SP2002, SP2004, SP2006, SP2008 and SP2010. You’ll find full instructions about the tasks at the front of the assessment activity

or: – one piece of writing you have completed during the course

or: – one authentic piece of writing you do during the course such as writing a letter or email

to a Spanish speaking relative, friend or penpal.

Your teacher will provide you with general feedback on each piece of writing and spoken interaction you submit so you can attempt to improve it (refer to the Assessment feedback chart to know the type of feedback you’ll receive for your writing). Your writing and spoken interaction will be holistically assessed from your best three pieces of writing and conversations. You have to keep your portfolios or conversations or writing in a safe place. Your recorded conversations will be saved in a Te Kura database. Towards the end of the year, you have to tell your teacher what three pieces of writing and conversations you want to be assessed on.

The detailed criteria for Achievement Standards will be given in the relevant booklets. They can also be found by searching the subject and level in the NCEA part of the NZQA website (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and then finding the relevant standard(s). There are two assessment opportunities for spoken presentation, one is called ‘SP2009Y5’ for an Achievement Standard and the other is called ‘SP2009Y6’.

External assessment preparation includes:

• Te Kura practice examinations.

time commitmentThere are 12 booklets in this course. Each booklet indicates how many study hours it is likely to require. For example, booklet SP2001 may take approximately 10 hours of work to complete at the normal pace, representing about two weeks of work at five hours per week. Before deciding on the pace of learning, read through this Course and assessment guide and ask yourself the following:

• How much time can I set aside for study each week?

• Will I be able to keep a steady pace of five hours of study each week?

• What do I want to do next year? How many credits will I need to do this?

• Will I be doing externally and internally assessed standards?

• Do I intend to sit the external examination at the end of the year?

• Do I need specific external or internal credits for next year’s study or work?



normal pace of learningAs a guide, expect to do at least five hours of work per week. This means completing three to four booklets each term so that you complete the course before the external examination at the end of the school year.

flexible pace of learningIf you have less than a year because you start later or need to finish earlier, you can decide the pace at which you work. You could still complete the whole course by devoting more time and effort to it.

cover sheetsThe cover sheets are at the back of each workbook, for example SP2001W. Fill it in and sign it before sending your work back to Te Kura. In the case of achievement standard work, your supervisor also signs this sheet as part of our authenticity requirements.

All students are encouraged to submit as much as possible of their work online via the OTLE Dropbox. When work requires authentication, students will follow the instructions provided in OTLE.

queries about your workIt is important to contact your teacher if you have any queries about your work. It helps to have your ID number, booklet code (for example, SP2002) and the activity or question number when you contact your teacher, but it is not essential.

studying a languageThe rule of thumb for language learning is a little, often, with lots of revision. Have a study plan and keep to it.

homeworkStudents studying this course in a school should complete any day’s work not completed in a class as homework. If you finish the work early, use the extra time to revise vocabulary.

using audioYou will be using audio recordings every day in this course. Keep the following things in mind when listening to or making recordings.

• The course audio files or CDs provide valuable opportunities for you to practise your Spanish. Don’t rush through the work. Listen to each paso carefully and several times for better understanding. Repeat speaking activities for more practice.

• You will be recording only at the end of every booklet so that your teacher can assess your speaking progress.



hints for making a good recording • Set yourself a high standard for recording and keep to it. If you think you can do an exercise

better, try again and again until it sounds right to you.

• Record in a quiet place. Turn off the stereo and television!

• Check your recording equipment. Make sure it’s in good working order. If it runs on batteries, check that they have enough power.

• Check your recording before you submit it.

return of workIt is important that you work regularly to consolidate your learning. We advise you to complete and return one booklet at a time. In this way, your teacher can provide you with timely feedback and order more booklets so you always have work to complete on hand. Please contact your teacher if you are running out of work. Secondary dual students access booklets through OTLE.

You only need to return the workbook and your recording for your teacher to assess your progress.

If you send in your recordings via email, make sure that you include: • your student ID number,

• booklet code and the work your recording is for in your email.

reviseBuild in time in your study plan for frequent revision of vocabulary and structures. Language learning is a cumulative process. You need to build a strong foundation of basic Spanish vocabulary and structures on which to expand as you move through the course.


how to do the work

booklet and workbookWork in the booklet and in the workbook. Make sure that you understand the explanations and learn the patterns given in the booklet before completing the exercises. Then complete the exercises, check your answers and correct them. Keep the corrections for reference and revision. The booklets and workbooks are yours to keep so you can make notes in them and highlight parts you want to remember. Each booklet is usually organised into ten días (days). Each día has between two and four pasos (steps). Expect to spend approximately one hour on each día or about ten hours on each booklet. This includes time for checking your work and revision.

hints for correcting your workCorrecting your work is an important part of your learning, so do it carefully and consistently. When you check your own answers, always:

• use a different coloured pen from the one you use to provide your answers

• tick the correct answers

• circle the mistakes

• write the correction after the exercise

• study and learn the correction. Write notes or your own explanations on loose pages, your booklet or your workbook about what you have learned from the corrections

• ask your teacher questions if you don’t understand something. You can contact your teacher by phone, fax or email. Give your name, ID number, the booklet code, día and paso you want to talk about.

audio filesYou will receive the couse audio either as audio files on OTLE or as audio CDs. Keep the CDs with their respective booklets in a safe place. Listen to all the pasos and do all the speaking activities.

recording activitiesIt’s really important that your teacher can listen to your recording. Here are some suggested ways you could do your recording.

• Record a WAV/MP3 file and email it to your teacher. Remember to type your name, ID number, and booklet number in the subject line of your email.

• Record a WAV/MP3 file and burn it onto a CD and send it with your workbook. Put your name, ID number, and booklet number on the CD.

The software we will be using to record audio or voice files is called Audacity, and can be downloaded free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download

However, you can use any other software to do your recordings but we prefer to receive WAV or MP3 files.

SPGS A grammar supplement which includes a concise grammar of the Spanish language and bilingual vocabulary lists.

supplementary materialsWhen learning a language it is important to read as much as possible. You not only improve your reading abilities by doing so, you also learn how to put words together in sentences and learn vocabulary.

The Spanish department at Te Kura has a library with magazines, sets of graded Spanish readers and supplementary activities which students can borrow. You may request supplementary materials or your teacher may send them to you. When you have read a book or magazine, please return the materials to your teacher. It is important to read Spanish for enjoyment and to revise and reinforce the vocabulary and structures you study during the course.

standardsSP2000 offers credits from Achievement Standards which count towards NCEA. Please refer to our Student Guide to National Certificates or Te Kura (www.tekura.school.nz) and NZQA websites (www.nzqa.govt.nz) for more information about National Certificates of Educational Achievement and assessment.

internal assessmentSP2000 offers three Achievement Standards that are internally assessed. This means that your teacher sets and marks all assessments that count towards credits gained for these standards.

The assessment opportunity for the spoken presentation Achievement Standard is coded ‘SP2009Y5’ and the second assessment opportunity offered is coded ‘SP2009Y6’. There are no second assessment opportunities for the interacting and writing Achievement Standards.

Your speaking skills will be assessed from a number of interactions (portfolio). Your teacher will provide you with general feedback on each piece of interaction you submit. Your speaking will be holistically assessed from your best two interactions. Toward the end of the year you will have to decide which pieces of interaction you want to be assessed on and inform your teacher.

external assessmentExternal assessment means that an external examiner marks your assessment work. This is through NZQA examinations at the end of the year.

resubmissions for internal assessmentsIf you have made mistakes in your spoken presentation standard assessment activity, your teacher may offer you one resubmission opportunity. This means you have made errors that you are capable of discovering and correcting by yourself. A resubmission allows you to correct your errors and improve your result.

te kura practice examinationsStudents should complete the Te Kura practice examinations for any external standards with an end of year examination they have entered. It is important that students complete all practice external assessments and examinations. If for some reason, such as illness, you are unable to sit the examinations at the end of the year you will only be eligible for consideration for a derived grade (compassionate consideration) if you have completed the practice examinations.

further assessment opportunities for internal assessmentsFor some standards, you will be able to complete a second assessment called a ‘further assessment opportunity’ to improve your results. These standards are indicated in the course outline. You should take this opportunity where it is available.


authenticity Authenticity means students complete and submit work that is their own. When you submit work to Te Kura, you sign an authentication declaration that the work you are submitting is your own work and was done under the required assessment conditions. Your supervisor signs this declaration to confirm this.

When submitting work online via the OTLE Dropbox, if it requires authentication, students must follow the instructions provided in OTLE.

derived grades (compassionate consideration)If for any unexpected reason you are not able to sit your end of year examination or to submit final work towards an internal standard (portfolios or projects), you may be eligible for a derived grade. Please refer to the Student Guide to National Certificates and contact your learning advisor or subject teacher as soon as possible to find out more should you feel this is necessary.

appealsYou have the right to query an assessment result if you want further clarification or disagree with the result. If you are still not satisfied, you may appeal.
