Firemen’s Benefit=fun for all
Story and photos by Holly Hemphll“ B I N G O ! ” That was the first thing I heard when I walked through the doors to Mill City’s fire-hall while a young lady waved her bingo card in the air. That night, November 23rd, was Mill City’s 69th Volunteer Fire Department Fire-men’s Benefit and it was busy! Even though the fire hall was packed everyone was su-per friendly and chattering away with their neighbors, talking with old friends and making new ones! Of course you can’t have bingo on a cold night without good food and hot coffee- the kitchen staff was busy cooking all evening long and there were of games for the little ones! Bingo winners took home either a turkey
or a ham. What’s a Bingo night without a raffle?! This years raffle included all sorts of prizes such as: (2) $100 bills, (2) $50 bills, (5) turkeys, (5) hams, (5) slabs of bacon, and (5) gift certificates! Thanks to everyone that volunteered and to everyone that came out tonight to support the Fire Department! The funds raised by the volunteers go to support the local Boy Scout Troop, the Boy Scout building heating and maintenance, the 4th of July Fireworks and the purchase of Gifts for the Giving Tree, The Fire De-partments new training materials and new equipment! Hope to see everyone and some new faces next year!

Statement from the National Weather Service A significant change in the weather pattern is expected the latter part of the Thanksgiving weekend as a very cold weather system moves into the Pacific Northwest. This system will bring snow to the Cascade passes and possibly the coast range with plenty of rain expected for the lowlands. An air mass with origins in the Arctic is ex-pected to follow this system and move into the region Sunday night and Monday lowering snow levels to a few hundred feet or even near the valley floor at this point in time. Friday and Saturday appear to be better travel days than Sunday for those returning home from the Holiday weekend, especially for those travel-ling across the Cascades.

Dear Santiam Canyon Community Members, I am pleased to announce that, in the next few months, the Santiam Canyon School District will be putting together a strategic plan to help us guide our direction and pri-orities these upcoming years. We invite the entire community to be part of this process. For planning purposes, the strategic plan will be organized into ‘buckets’. At this point I have outlined general buckets, but even they can be shaped and edited throughout this process. To help get our discussion started, we will be planning in the categories of:1. Student Success2. Staff Development & Recruitment3. Program Options & Supports4. Infrastructure (including facilities and technology)5. Governance & Communication We welcome and encourage staff, parents, students and community members to at-tend these sessions and become a part of the process. The final document will become our guide for budgeting, planning, professional development and decision-making. Karen’s mother health has taken a turn, requiring that she has care around the clock care. For now we will be caring for her in her home near the Oregon Coast to allow her to enjoy the beautiful home she created there. Tree Lighting in Mill City, with a visit
from Santa too! The City of Mill City will be hosting it’s second annual tree lighting event on Sun-day, December 8th at 5 pm. Once again the City will be partnering with local community groups and businesses to bring this wonderful event to our citizens. It looks like Santa will be able to stop in for a visit, and the Santiam Canyon Com-munity Chorus will be singing songs of the season. A new addition this year will be a canned food drive benefiting our local Mill City Food Bank. For every non perishable food item the bearer will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of many prizes do-nated by local artisans. So, mark your calendars and be sure to re-member to bring in some canned or boxed foods to be entered into the drawing. We look forward to celebrating the season with friends and family.

2013 Firemen’s Benefit a HUGE Success
Mill City Volunteer Fire Department and the Board of Directors would like to thank all the business and the community mem-bers who supported our 69th Annual Fire-men’s Benefit. We hope that a good time was had by all. The department would also like to thank the volunteer’s spouses, friends, former volunteers and their spouses who also gave their time. They are the ones that keep our kitchen going. Also, a thank you to the San-tiam High School International Club for or-ganizing the kid’s games. The funds raised during this event go to-wards the training of volunteers, new equip-ment, repair of older equipment, medical supplies and also the annual 4th of July Fireworks. Once again, we would like to thank the businesses and community members for their unwavering support of our depart-ment. The volunteers and board of direc-tors would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!

Local business applies for grant to help teach
water safetyby Holly Hemphill Good news on the ho-rizon for the water friendly? We hope so! At the latest City Council meeting Sam Drevo of eNRG Kayaking asked the city for permission to pursue his grant for a Life Jacket Loaner Station. The station would function as a kiosk that lent out life jackets to boaters, rafters, kids playing near the water, and fisherman. The station would be funded by the grant where the life jackets would be all from commu-nity donations since it would be a non profit organization. The kiosk could potentially house more than just the life jackets but could also con-tain things such as: a regular river report, some sort of boater education information, and someone to help fit a child for the right life jacket. The members of city council had few con-cerns regarding the location of the station, the return of life jackets, and the amount of vandalism that our town has – however, the council voted in favor of Sam moving for-ward with his submission of paperwork for the grant and are in favor of improving the water safety and providing more resources for the community. If the grant is approved, Thorin Thacker of City Council as agreed to be the liaison between the non profit and the council to work out the finer details of the kiosk.

By Denise Ruttan– It’s not too late in west-ern Oregon to plant spring-flowering bulbs that will infuse color once the gray days of winter retreat.Plant spring-flowering bulbs from Septem-ber to December in western Oregon, said Barb Fick, horticulturist for the Oregon State University Extension Service. The optimum planting period depends on the hardiness of each variety. In general, it is best to plant when the soil temperature reaches below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.Gardeners in eastern Oregon and at higher elevations will want to get their spring-flow-ering bulbs in the ground as soon as possi-ble, Fick said. September to early November is the best time for eastern Oregon planting.Plants have evolved several methods of stor-ing food through periods of drought, and the bulb is one of those methods. A true bulb has a hard underground storage structure formed from the plant stem and leaves, according to Fick. Other kinds of storage organs include corms, rhizomes and tubers, which are all types of stem tissue but not true bulbs. Pe-rennial plants that bear buds in underground botanical structures are all known as geo-phytes, Fick said. It’s the cool temperatures of winter that jolt geophytes into producing. So if you’re looking for certain sizes of flow-ers at the nursery, it follows that “the bigger the bulb, the bigger the flower,” said Fick, a horticulture instructor in OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences.Don’t pick bulbs covered with gray mold
at the nursery, Fick advised. Plant bulbs as soon as possible after you purchase them so they can establish root systems before the soil freezes or snow covers the ground. If you can’t plant in your yard, use potting soil and a container to plant the bulbs, or store
bulbs in a cool, dry place, such as a garage or basement.Here are Fick’s recommendations for beauti-ful and easy spring-flowering bulbs.Daffodil — These cheerful white- and yel-low- bell-shaped flowers also happen to be deer-resistant. Plus, they require little main-tenance. “They’re bulletproof,” Fick said.Tulip — The key to ensuring the continued survival of your tulips? “They will not come back if you water them in the summer,” Fick said. “Plant them in a place in your yard where you won’t water them in the summer.”
Tulips, which bloom in mid- to late spring, make a great cut flower in a bouquet, added Fick. She recommends the cultivar “Tu-lipa clusiana,” also known as “Peppermint Stick,” for its deep pink and white stripes.Crocus — One of the earliest-blooming
bulbs, some varieties flower in late win-ter. The large-flowered Dutch hybrids bloom a variety of colors in early spring. Cultivars that bloom in late winter in-clude Crocus tomasinianus, also known as “Ruby Giant”; Crocus ancyrensis, also known as “Golden Bunch”; and Crocus angustifolius, better known as “Cloth of Gold.”Hyacinth — With its intense colors and aromas, hyacinths are a spring garden staple. Two of the most recognized spe-cies of hyacinth are Hyacinthus orienta-lis, also known as the common garden hyacinth, and Muscari armeniacum, also known as the grape hyacinth.
Allium — These pretty, aromatic ornamen-tal onions come in a variety of colors. Some varieties have enormous sizes of flowers, Fick said. George J. Fuller, 74, of Corval-lis, Or-egon, for-merly of Mill City O r e g o n , p a s s e d a w a y peacefully on No-vember 21, 2013 at the Evergreen
Hospice House in Albany, Oregon.He was the youngest child of 16 born Au-gust 16, 1939 to George Wesley and Susie
(Sharer) Fuller in Sheridan, Oregon. George was preceded in death by his Wife Kathleen Ann (Bacon) Fuller.He is survived by his children; Carolyn of Gates, Oregon; Becky and son-in law John Davids of Corvallis, Oregon; Crystal and son-in law Steve Arnold of Salem, Oregon and Steven of Salem, Oregon.He is also survived by 15 Grandchildren, 17 Great-Grandchildren and a Great-Great Granddaughter. Winnifred L. BilowJuly 6, 1924 – November 26, 2013
Sublimity – Winnifred, 89, died November 26 in Salem. She was born in Garfield, WA and moved to Sublimity in 1989. Winnifred worked as a Motel Manager for 20 years. She enjoyed cooking, baking and traveling. Winnifred was a true homemaker just loving to take care of her family in her own spunky, witty, funny and ornery way. She married Charles Bilow on October 28,
1946 in Hanford, WA , he preceded her in death in 2003. Winnifred is survived by chil-dren: Linda (Dave) Morris of Mehama, Fred (Gale) Bilow of Lake Havasu, AZ, and Stac-ey (Linda) Bilow of Hillsboro; 9 – grandchil-dren; 17 – great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne in 1983, her three sisters and her best friend and neigh-bor, Bev, earlier this year. Private family services will be held. Serv-ing the family, North Santiam Funeral Ser-vice, Stayton.

Thursday, December 5 The Mill City Historical Society will have its Christmas Program December 5th at 7 pm at the Gates Fire Department. The program will include the North Santi-am Canyon Chorus. The chorus is directed by Jahn Hoover and will be accompanied by Joanne Hebing on the piano. All are in-vited to come listen to the 30 member cho-rus and join in singing Christmas songs. Brothers Alex Mitchell (age 10 at left) and Brady Mitch-ell (age 12 at right) of Gates filled their wild turkey tags in southern Oregon, thanks to the tutelage of dad, Brad, seen here in the center. They plan to roast one up for Thanksgiving, and perhaps another one or two for Christmas day.
