What a great challenge for the youth of Milton who are about to begin a twelve week youth development programme. The M.A.N.A Programme (acronym for Maturity, Achievable, Nourishing, Awareness) has been developed by Tokomairiro Waiora Incorporated and the Youth Co-ordinator and with the support of Mejiro Gym, Tokomairiro High School, Department of Corrections, Public Health South and Southern District Health Board (HEHA), will run between 6 September - 26 November from 6am - 8.15am three mornings each week. The programme comprises physical challenges plus healthy eating with a focus on nutrition. The goal is to develop healthy, fit, motivated young people and develop healthy eating, incorporating nutrition and healthy lifestyles. The Programme will also encourage participants to develop and boost self-esteem and values, build positive attitudes, recognise personal ability and to develop attributes needed to be successful (i.e. responsibility, integrity, critical thinking and interpersonal skills). This Programme supports our youth to achieve their goals and we are excited about getting it underway. • Mathletics On behalf of the year 7 classes at Tokomairiro High School I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and teachers who took time off work to help us have a wonderful time at Mathletics. On Monday August 16th the year 7’s went to Dunedin Town Hall for Mathletics. There were four teams, two from Mrs Flett’s class and two from Ms Scott’s class. We had to answer as many maths questions as we could in thirty minutes. When we thought we knew the answer our runner had to take it up to be marked. Some of the questions were very hard but we had a great time. After Mathletics the adults took us out to tea. My team had KFC with another team. One team went to McDonalds. Everybody had a great time. Thank you to the people who helped with driving us, Kim MacDonald, Lisa Dobson, Craig Tough and Caroline Hadley. These were some of the comments we got from 7Ma. Sam: It was a great experience to try something different. Kane: I loved the dinner we had, it was nice. Scott: It was a great challenge. Ollie: We need to keep working to improve our maths. Rachel: When you ran you could feel the wind pushing against your face and the nerves racing down your body. Jess: There was a lot of team work throughout and although we didn’t win we still had fun.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora Congratulations to all students who participated and contributed last week. The year tens attended camp at Tautuku and attending staff, plus adult volunteers, have reported how well behaved every one was. Congratulations also to the year ten students who won the Spirit Trophy through participating in the Spirit of Adventure experience with enthusiasm plus conscientious dedication to the challenges presented. We had students who represented our school with honour at the Otago Mathletics last Monday, as did our Kapahaka group at the Taieri schools event last Tuesday. The behaviour of our students at these activities reinforces the belief that we have at Tokomairiro High School that our future is in good hands. The majority of our young people today, in spite of the growing demands of our information based society, are developing and displaying the values of good citizenship. • School Vests This week we have given out high visibility vests for our bus children to wear to keep them safer going to and from school. These have been donated to primary schools by Fonterra (Otago), Rotary Club of Balclutha and The Masonic Charitable Trust. It will be compulsory for them to be worn by the children to and from school.

Playcentre Report On Wednesday the children all went for a walk to the Library where they were greeted by a lovely furry black and white cat (aka Mary-Rose Mallon) who read the children a fabulous book called ‘Mr Muggs’. This was very special because this book was being read in all libraries in New Zealand at the same time. The children had their morning tea while being read to and were then able to colour in some great cat pictures. The children loved their time at the library and a huge thanks to Mary-Rose and the library staff forgiving us such a memorable visit. Our Milton Best Bloke Awards 2010 are being held on Friday September 10th at 7.30pm. See our ad for the contestants! You can vote for Mr Personality in the Westpac Bank with monetary donations and the Bloke with the most money wins the title of Mr Personality. Points from this are allocated and will go towards the final tally on the night. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards developing a roading area in our playground and also purchase ride-ons and scooters for the children. We look forward to seeing you there. It will be a great night out with prizes, raffles, auction items as well as our eight blokes doing some hilarious things in the race for the title. Daffodil Day The National Bank continues its support of the Cancer Societies ‘Daffodil Day’. This year is the 20th Anniversary and is being held on the 27th of August. The local National bank are running their annual multi draw raffle which local retailers have been so generous in donating goods towards, and selling various Daffodil day items such as teddy bears, silk daffodils, windmills, jewellery etc. For the first time ever we have a memory tree at the bank where people are able to purchase for a gold coin donation a decorative tribute for a special friend or loved one. These tributes can then be placed on the tree and collected after daffodil day. So come and support the girls at the National Bank and help them support our local region in raising funds for this worthy cause.

Milton Garden Club On Monday 9th August, the AGM was held in the Senior Citizen’s Rooms. After the President’s Report on the years activities, Office Bearers were elected. President; Val Cullen Vice President; Frances Grant Secretary; Jennie McIntosh Treasurer; Sheila Steel Committee; Ngarita Bearman, Jeanette Michelle, Yvonne Dobbie, Isobel Robinson, Coral Beattie. At the conclusion of the business we welcomed Helen Vollweiler who gave a most interesting talk on her recent visit to France. But instead of the usual modes of transport to see the country, she and husband David cycled their way around. Cycling about eight hours each day, they stayed in small villages, met many of the French people, sampled the food, experienced life on a French sheep farm and mingled with the locals. They also had time to visit some of the ‘fashion shops’ in the cities. Cycling along the road adjacent to the beaches of Normanby, where so many soldiers lost their lives in WW2, Helen found quite a sombre experience. As gardeners we were interested in her descriptions of the huge fields of sunflowers which were just coming into bloom. Also the colourful displays of potted plants around the houses in most of the small villages. We all enjoyed hearing of her highly entertaining and very energetic holiday. Afternoon tea and a chat concluded a busy afternoon. Competition winners; 1 Gail Coote, 2 Jean Allison, 3 Ngarita Bearman. Raffle winners; Ngarita Bearman, Leonore Pringle, Jennie McIntosh. On Monday 13th September we are visiting Wal’s Nursery and Chatsford in Mosgiel. Transport leaves Elizabeth Street, 10.30am please bring or buy your lunch. Please telephone Val Cullen 417 7213

    READY FOR ALL OFFERS!

My vendor wants it sold and invites the market to inspect this property and make them an offer. This 582m2 leg-in section is perfectly suited for a double-unit or a town-house. Grab a perfect opportunity, develop this site to its full potential, and you'll have an asset that pays you back as soon as you’ve finished developing! Call Shane today and bring your builder by for a look!

HAND-PICKED The burden of ensuring that all our valued clients and their assets were in safe hands prior to my new adventure with my family meant that for a number of months I went scouring the land, looking for someone who wasn’t just trying to capitalise on 30 months of someone else’s hard slog, but who would exceed expectations and give more to Milton. Being a salesperson is an ambassador’s job. When I met Shane last Christmas, first impressions were positive. Several months later, again Shane crosses my path, this time as a home-buyer. It turns out this Texan ex-soldier had fallen for a Kiwi girl, married, had two children, and they now wanted to settle in Milton! Fair enough– and I have some extremely successful Ray White compatriots in other parts of the country with a military background– so when I discovered the last four years he’d also worked in sales after transferring from active duty to the U.S. Army Reserves – I was convinced it was a divine appointment before I even let him know there was a business opportunity! Perfect timing– he’s been professional in his training and development, seen several sales through to completion, and has clocked up his first solo negotiation effort, the third in a row of Selwyn Wilkinson’s we’ve listed and sold (well done Selwyn!). He in the process negotiated above the previous deal, netting Gunner another $2,500.00 (obviously the prior contract helped the negotiations upwards- it shows how an agent that is working for their vendors is worth their weight in gold). And the sale price was 38% higher than the first offer! To leave my clients. and their business, in the hands of an agent who was ready to take the commitment of service and client care to another level was paramount for me. So I’m pleased to welcome Shane, he has a heart for Milton, a natural ability to empathise with the buyer while working for the seller, and he takes the attitude “there is always more you can know” so he seeks further understanding whenever he perceives the need. The team at Ray White Proven Realty gives him the same support it gave me and you’ve witnessed the success that’s brought our clients. Thank you Milton for all your support of my family and my business– I trust you’ll show Shane the same. Thanks Milton, Nathan Buxton

Nathan Buxton congratulates Shane Kimmey on proving his resolve and on taking over the business. (Read Nathan’s comments on Shane above.)

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE “LOCAL”? Would you say it’s where you live, work, shop, socialize, and

unwind? To me, being local doesn’t mean living in a nearby town,

it means living in this town. It doesn’t mean driving here because

you have to, it means living here because you want to. Weekday

mornings I drop my daughters off at the Milton Early Learning

House where my wife also works. In our free time, we can be

found sitting on our deck here on Chaucer Street, or walking to a

nearby park to watch our girls play. I live here, shop here, and

work here, and being truly local makes me truly passionate about

my area. I’m excited to be your new local Ray White salesperson.

Milton Kindergarten News It’s been a busy term so far, with a lot of interesting and exciting learning happening for our children!! You-tube has been invaluable for researching our current animal: elephants. Having access to current footage makes the experience of learning, more meaningful and real. We would like to extend an open invitation to two big events on our social calendar. On Thursday September 2nd from 7-8.30pm, we are holding a Parent Forum, where we have invited Malcolm from St John’s to come and demonstrate basic first aid for families. He will be discussing topics such as: burns, bleeding noses, broken bones, choking, and other areas of first aid that are relevant for families. We hope this topic will give parents, confidence to deal with emergencies before seeking further medical attention. Supper will be provided. Our second big event is a ‘Garage Sale’ to be held on Saturday 18th September. We invite members of the community to come and have a stall to sell their pre-loved/unwanted goods. The cost is only $10 per space which can be a table or blanket. We have a generous veranda which wraps around our Kindergarten, to provide shelter (should the weather be unfavourable). Tea, coffee and a sausage sizzle will be run alongside the garage sale. Please ring 417 4290 to register your interest in having a stall or if you have any other queries.

We have just completed another successful and enjoyable Netball season for primary aged girls in Milton. We had eight teams competing this year which lead to a stronger competition with great games and saw all the girls gain incredible netball skill levels and knowledge. The games have been played in good spirit with lots of fun along the way. We were very lucky to have only one game cancelled this season, as being at the High School Courts with its shelter meant that games more often

than not were played in pleasant conditions. Our thanks must go out to the Coaches and Parent helpers, and especially to the high school girls that helped out. Their input was invaluable. A special thank you to Natasha Maybee who kept the scores and wrote the Netball report each week in the Genesis. The play offs were completed at the end of the season and this saw “The Professionals” take out the senior competition and the Stars win the juniors. Well done girls.

Diane Knight was compere for the evening, with her awesome sense of humour she kept the night rolling and did a wonderful job. During the night we had a quiz with a twist...naming different places throughout New Zealand and naming baby photos which had been a c q u i r e d w i t h o u t t h e par t ic ipant ’s knowledge. Quizmaster Richard Knight provided the audience with a very entertaining challenge. O t a g o p l a y e r s J as o n M a c d o n a l d a n d S am Anderson-Heather spoke and presented awards. An extra prize donated by the ORFU went out to Connor Devlin who has been a great team player all season. He received an Otago Jersey, family tickets to this week’s game and is to be Ball Boy for Otago this Thursday. Jason and Sam are great ambassadors for Otago Rugby and we thanked them for being available to attend the prize giving. The ladies in the kitchen kept a scrumptious rolling supper on the tables and the bar kept everyone’s glasses full.

On behalf of the Toko Rugby Club we would like to thank our sponsors and everyone who helped and attended for their support of the night. Well done to the award winners, especially our Toko boys. The 2010 junior soccer season finished on a high note at the season breakup held at the St Mary’s Primary School hall. A sausage sizzle followed the awards ceremony which was followed by an impromptu game of parent’s Vs players. This game was a resounding 15 – all draw to the parents. Both the Midget and 8th grade teams did very well loosing only a handful of games and p l a ye r s s how i n g r e a l improvement as the season went on. The 12th grade had a challenging season but showed huge improvement towards the end of the season. It must be noted that a number of this grade were playing in a higher grade than their age. This bodes well for next

season as no 12th graders will be too old for their grade. The Award Winners for 2010 are as follows: Midgets; Most improved player- Blue Gunion 8th Grade; Most improved player- Meg Clark 12th Grade; Most improved player – Renata Bassett Clark Sportsperson of the Year Trophy; Junior – Conrad Bond, Senior – Ollie Gordon– Glassford The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and coaches with their help towards another successful season of Junior Soccer. A special thanks must go to Ray White Real Estate for their continued support.
