Sewing instructions

1. Cut out the pieces for the petals on the fold of the fabric below. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you observe which way your jersey "rolls". That is, when it is stretched, which edge collapses into a roll. You can see in the photo below that I cut the petals on the fold and PERPENDICULAR to the roll.

This is important because you want the petals to curl at the ends not along the lengths. 2. Cut out two ovals from your felt for the tongues of the sandals.

You will end up with these pieces. Note that each flower needs 10 petals - 3 x large, 3 medium and 4 small.

3. Time to make your flowers for the top of each sandal. Lay the three petals on top of each other as they are in the photo below - the three large petals together, the three medium petals together and three of the small petals together. Make sure the petal tips curl upwards not under. You will have one small petal left over. Good.

Sewing pattern: Barefoot baby sandals Then just layer them onto each other. Put the left over small petal on top of the small flower. Then put that on top of the medium flower. Then put that on top of the large flower. You will create a lovely curly flower for the top of the sandal. Fasten with lots of stitches to guard against baby attacking and destroying.

4. Time to cut out some straps. Cut a long strap PARALELL to the fabric rolling edge. Cut the width about the same as two fingers. Once you have established the width you can use the length you have cut as a guide and keep folding it forward so you are cutting a consistent width. Great sewing trick.

Sewing pattern: Barefoot baby sandals See how once it is cut it is already curling (below)? This is good. Cut it into strap lengths using the pattern pieces as guides. This is where you can adjust the size for different widths of feet. Wide feet - make the straps longer. Newborn feet - maybe make them shorter. Remember you are cutting 6 straps. Three for each sandal.

5. Stretch each strap a bit to get it nice and curled.

6. Mark the sewing points on each strap. Use pins or a couple of stitches of a contrasting thread that you can pull out later. You will end up with all the components ready for assembly.

7. Stitch the two sets of straps together at the corresponding points you have marked. Look at the photo below for which points to match up. Look closely at the photo below and you will see that the curled sides of the strap are down the smooth sides are facing up.

8. Attach the straps to each tongue. Fasten the straps with stitching on the TOP of the tongue. This is more comfortable for baby than having all those ends right on top of their squishy little feet. The flower will hide these ends anyway. Make sure that the neat side of the strap is facing out and the curled side is underneath.

9. Attach the flower to the top. Do lots of very thorough stitching as baby will have a good bash at them and pull on the flower.

The finished product will look a bit like a napkin holder. But When you stretch it over baby's feet this the end result! Fantastic.
