INMARSAT SATELLITES

The entire INMARSAT network operates through a constellation of 9 geo-stationary satellites.

Geo-Stationary Satellite: Orbits in an equatorial plane at exactly the same angular velocity as that of earth’s rotational speed; appears to be fixed at a specific point in the sky when viewed from the earth.

(Distance from surface of the Earth = 35,784 Kms)

Advantage:

INMARSAT users need not to switch satellites throughout the world.

GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS & SAFETY SYSTEM (GMDSS)

International system to ensure alerting of rescue authorities in the event of a marine distress

Cargo ships of 300 gross tons & upwards and passenger ships on international voyages must be shipped with GMDSS standard equipment.

SEA ZONES / AREASArea A1: within VHF range; Carry VHF & INMARSATArea A2: Beyond A1 but within MF range; Carry VHF, MF &

INMARSATArea A3: Beyond A1 & A2 but within coverage of geo-stationary

maritime communication satellites (roughly 82 deg North & 82 deg South);Carry INMARSAT, VHF & MF

Area A4: Remaining Sea Areas; Carry HF, MF & VHF

Page 37: TCIL 11 Inmarsat Presentation

INMARSAT’S ROLE IN GMDSS

INMARSAT – A, B, C & F-77:Initiated at the press of a dedicated button on Ship Earth Station (SES). Distress alert is the routed through LES to an associated RCC ashore.

INMARSAT – E : An L-Band EPIRB transmission between INMARSAT-E & RCC takes less than 2-Minutes.

Page 38: TCIL 11 Inmarsat Presentation

INMARSAT FLEET SERVICES

FLEET F-77: Complies to latest distress & safety requirements of International Maritime organization (IMO) resolution for voice pre-emption & prioritization within the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS) for providing Voice, Fax, Mobile ISDN (128 Kbps-data transfer & remote diagnosis) & Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS).

APPLICATION: Data Transfer, Internet, LAN & Private network access, E-mail, Fax, Instant messaging, SMS, Voice, Crew Calling, Encryption, Video-conferencing, Store-and-forward video, Remote monitoring, chart & weather updates, Tele-Medicine & GMDSS.

Page 39: TCIL 11 Inmarsat Presentation

FLEET- 55: Uses medium-size antenna, need not to meet IMO regulations & thus do not include GMDSS.

Fleet- F-33:Offers Global telephone, MPDS and enhanced 9.6 Kbps Data & Fax services with INMARSAT Spot-Beam.

APPLICATION: Data Transfer, Internet, LAN & Private Network Access, E-mail, Fax, Instant messaging, SMS, Voice, Crew Calling, Encryption, Video conferencing , Store-and-forward Video, Remote monitoring, Chart & weather update & Telemedicine.

SAFETY COMMUNICATIONSCNS/ATM Strategy

Controller-Pilot Data Link Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) Controller/Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC)

Satellite Navigation Services currently provided by US GPS & Russian Glonass Military Systems

and future addition will be Europe’s Civil System, Galileo. The Ground Earth Stations monitor the GPS signals & send the resulting

information to one or more Master Control Stations. The differential GPS information modulated into a GPS-like signal and up-linked to the navigation transponders, which broadcast them to aviation users.

Air Traffic Organization:

1. CNS/ATM : ICAO, US Federal Aviation

2. Administration : UK National Air Traffic

3. Services : EUROCONTROL, Nav. Canada, Air Services Australia

Data AccelerationSwift-64 can offer up to FOUR simultaneous 64 Kbps channels and can be “bonded” to produce 256 Kbps which can be boosted to more than 0.5 Mbps by data acceleration technologies.

Voice MultiplexingV100 multiplexer from Vocality International UK allows up to EIGHT simultaneous phone conversations on Swift- 64 Mobile ISDN (64 Kbps). It uses data compression & dynamic bandwidth allocation to slice single Swift-64 channel into multiple voice channels.
