From the basics of keyboarding to Internet research techniques, document creation, and digital citizenship, students practice essential skills through individual and team projects. When taken with Computer Literacy I, this course maps to the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS). COURSE LENGTH: One semester MATERIALS: Microsoft Office 2003* and GIMP (free download) PREREQUISITES: TCH010: Computer Literacy I * Note: This course uses Office 2003; the instructions in the course do not support functions available in Office 2007 Project 1: Plan Your Company Students learn how to use e-mail, identify Internet connection types, and evaluate the reliability of Web sites. They learn about types of computers, how performance is measured, input and output devices, and popular printer types. They learn about intellectual property and copyright registration. They learn to find images, identify the difference between JPEGs and GIFs, and use some tools for working with images. Lab 1: E-mail Your Group Lab 2: Manage E-mail Lab 3: Evaluate Your ISP Lab 4: Investigate Your Hardware Lab 5: Find Images Lab 6: Trace an Image Lab 7: Add Image Effects Project 2: Display Survey Results Students work with Excel workbooks, learning how to use tools for entering data, formatting text, and changing cell alignment and orientation. They learn to identify common chart types, create column and pie charts, format text on the X and Y axes, and format columns in a chart. Lab 1: Enter Data Lab 2: Format Data Lab 3: Create Charts Lab 4: Finalize a Worksheet

TCH020: Computer Literacy IIThis course builds on Computer Literacy I to develop the skills and concepts essential for computer literacy in the 21st century. Project 3: analyze Your ProductsStudents learn more features of Excel, writing formulas and using AutoFill for text, dates, numbers, and formulas. They learn the difference between absolute and relative cell references, how to use functions, add comments, and format worksheets for printing.

• Lab 1: Enter and Format Data • Lab 2: Analyze Data • Lab 3: Organize Data • Lab 4: Display Data • Lab 5: Finalize a Worksheet

Project 4: Make a Company reportStudents work with Word documents, entering text, adding numbered and bulleted lists, applying and creating styles make formatting easier, using charts, tracking changes in a document, and adding comments. They learn to add footnotes, use the spelling and grammar checker, use Find and Replace feature, use the Document Map, and view document statistics.

• Lab 1: Enter Text • Lab 2: Style Text • Lab 3: Paste Linked Data • Lab 4: Edit a Document • Lab 5: View a Document

Project 5: Make Company MaterialsStudents learn to use the Calendar Wizard, including resizing and cropping images. They create a brochure with a template and learn to change text, styles, and images.

• Lab 1: Make a Calendar • Lab 2: Make a Brochure • Lab 3: Make a Newsletter • Lab 4: Make Letterhead

Project 6: Present Your CompanyStudents outline a presentation in Microsoft Word and import it into PowerPoint. They learn to change slide layouts; create, duplicate, move, and delete slides; format text; fit text to the space; and add text inside an AutoShape. They learn to use design templates and color schemes, the Slide Master, and images from Clip Art. They add transitions and animations, and prepare speaker notes and handouts.
