01ANNUAL REPORT | 2011
We are proud to present this annual report in a year that saw many changes at Triangle Community Foundation. It has been an exciting time of transition but also a time for getting back to the core functions that drive the work of the Foundation. Indeed, this past year we recommitted ourselves to “The Main Things:” (1) donor identification and cultivation; (2) exemplary financial and asset management; (3) fundholder services and relations; and (4) grantmaking. Every day, our focus is to be a high performing, sustainable organization in relentless pursuit of continuous improvement.
One of the Main Things that has not changed is our commitment to “best in class” customer service and engagement for our donors and fundholders. In October, we held a gathering for fundholders and friends to reconnect with many of you and share our new strategic plan, Connecting For Impact: Engaging Donors to Strengthen the Triangle. You will find more information about the plan in this report, and the entire document is available on our website. We have recently launched an e-newsletter to keep you more connected with the activities of grantees and fundholders and also serve as a reminder for more ways to be involved with us in the coming year.
The Foundation ended the current fiscal year on June 30, 2011 with total assets of $144.9 million, the highest level in the history of the Foundation. Investment gains for the fiscal year totaled $19.5 million, due largely to the con-tinuing recovery of the investment markets after the precipitous downturn in late 2008 and throughout 2009. Contributions and gifts to TCF for the year totaled $12 million, and grants made to charitable organizations totaled $14.1 million. Thank you for helping to make a positive difference in the Triangle region through community-based philanthropy.

TCF Quick Facts for 2011:
• Granted over $14.1 million
• Awarded 3,234 grants
• Assets of $144.9 million
• More than 750 charitable funds
While TCF may not have suffered as much as many nonprofits during this prolonged period of economic uncertainty, we know that countless safety net organizations and other nonprofits are struggling, and we must step up our efforts to provide assistance to them and the tens of thousands of people they serve. It is our mission to help our fundholders and donors learn about nonprofits doing good work in our region, and how together we can gain a deeper understanding of the Triangle’s most critical needs and where we can make a difference.
We thank you for your trust and philanthropic investment in the Foundation and the com-munity in which we live. Only by connecting with one another – by pooling our resources and talents to collaborate and work together – can we begin to have a substantial, positive impact on the most pressing problems of our region. We are grateful for your dedication to Triangle Community Foundation and your unwavering support of community-based philanthropy.

Connecting for Impact: Engaging Donors to Strengthen the Triangle
The 2011-2014 Strategic Plan will help the Foundation strengthen services to
fundholders, increase charitable funding, address leading issues, and practice
organizational excellence. TCF’s goal is to preserve and steward long-term charitable
resources in Wake, Durham, Orange, and Chatham counties for issues that matter to
our community members.
Strategic Plan Focus Areas
STEWARDSHIP
TCF will offer personalized
philanthropic advice and
targeted opportunities to
better inform and involve
our fundholders with
community issues. It will
also provide excellent and
well-defined services to
help them give generously
to charitable organizations

grant volume through the
growth of charitable gifts
and the prudent investment
of assets. It intends to
partner with fundholders
and other local funders on
leading issues in the Triangle
region for coordinated and
leveraged impact.
LEADERSHIP
TCF serves as a long-term
advocate on behalf of the
region and as a trustee of
permanent resources to
address community needs.
It will bring together diverse
voices in our community
to identify, assess, and
prioritize needs and align
its community initiatives,
grant programs and services
with those needs.
SUSTAINABILITY
TCF preserves and stewards the philanthropic legacy of its donors
and the community through a business model that ensures
long-term sustainability while accomplishing short-term strategic
initiatives. TCF will optimize systems, technology and resources
to meet the stated objectives of the Strategic Plan.

The George H. Hitchings Society Building a legacy for generations to come
Triangle Community Foundation created the George H. Hitchings Society to
recognize donors who set up gifts to the Foundation in their estate or financial
planning. The society is named for the foundation’s creator, Nobel Laureate
Dr. George Hitchings, and honors those who, by naming TCF as a beneficiary in
their wills, trusts, insurance policies, or retirement assets, build resources for the
community. Individuals who include legacy charitable gifts in their estate or financial
planning serve as an example and inspiration for others.
To learn more about the Hitchings Society, please contact Robin Barefoot, at

Triangle Community Foundation is committed to growing the philanthropic
resources of our community through careful stewardship of the Foundation’s
assets. One of our core functions is exemplary financial and asset management
in order to increase charitable assets while preserving capital. The Foundation’s
assets have grown from an initial contribution of $3,000 to approximately
$145 million in total assets, our highest level to date. During the 2010-2011 fiscal
year, the Foundation received contributions of $12 million and made grants
totaling $14.1 million. Investment gains for the same period totaled $19.5 million,
and were fueled by the continued recovery of the investment markets.
The Investment Committee is responsible for management of the Foundation’s
investments. Members of the Investment Committee are chosen for their
business and financial management experience and expertise. Our invest-
ment strategy is determined by our Investment Committee with input from
Colonial Consulting, our independent investment advisor. For the past 30 years,
Colonial Consulting has provided investment advisory services to large endow-
ments and foundations and has the expertise to understand the requirements
and challenges of philanthropic organizations.
The Foundation’s assets are invested in three main pools of capital: the Endowed
Portfolio (currently 60% equity, 20% fixed income, 20% alternative), the Non-
Endowed Equity-Oriented Portfolio (currently 75% equity, 25% fixed income),
and the Non-Endowed Fixed Income-Oriented Portfolio (currently 30% equity,
70% fixed income). The investment portfolios are designed and managed to:
1) provide diversified, high-quality investments without undue risk of significant
capital depreciation; 2) produce returns that exceed inflation and the spending
needs of endowed funds; and 3) meet or exceed established investment industry
benchmarks.
