Principal’s Greeting Let me begin by wishing everyone a joyful Easter! Our students worked hard
to prepare for the various services during Holy Week and sang beautifully at
each one. As we know, Easter is not just one day but rather a season, one in
which we renew our everyday lives in light of the Resurrection.
Despite having the fewest school days, March was busy enough with academic
work, extra choral rehearsals, a recording, instrumental recitals, debating,
Science Fair, Reach, volleyball, basketball and Concept Lounge. We hope our
students were able to recharge their batteries over the March break to pre-
pare for what lies ahead.
At the time that this newsletter appears, tour will be under way. In addition to the concerts and
sites we’ll see, this is a special event in the history of our school as we reconnect with the Pontifical
Institute of Sacred Music and sing at St Peter’s Basilica as Cardinal Collins celebrates mass. This is
also an exciting time in the life of the Church as our cardinal and his colleagues have been inspired
to elect Pope Francis to shepherd the universal Church.
While in Italy, I’ll remain in communication by e-mail. Our vice-principal, Mr Kovacs, will be at
school, available to field any questions or concerns you may have during this time. We bring the
prayers and special intentions of the entire Choir School community with us to Rome and we ask
for your prayers for a safe and successful trip. You can follow the latest news about the trip on our
newly rejuvenated web-site, www.smcs.on.ca , and then by clicking on the Italy ‘13 link.
Buona Paqua!
Welcome!
We welcome two new members onto our su-
pervision team:
Lunchtime Supervisor, Ms S. Gomez Vila and
Student Supervisor, Ms M. Ionno.

Putting our Faith in Action
St. Michael’s Choir School and Crescent School
Working together for the good of others.
On Wednesday March 27th, grade our grade 11 religion students teamed up with a World Religions class from
Crescent School to run a street patrol. Street patrols provide our students with the opportunity to put their
faith into action by offering food and fellowship to disadvantaged members of our community. Led by Anders
Marshall, our boys planned a route, organized the purchase of food, packed over 70 lunches, and distributed
the food in the streets of downtown Toronto.
The lunches were complemented with the care packages assembled by the students from Crescent School.
These packages included a variety of essential items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, socks,
toques and gloves.
A special thanks goes out to Ms. Pina Povolo and Mr. Patrick Parro for their help with coordinating the food.
We would like to thank Mr. Michael Fellin and all the boys from Crescent School for their meaningful contribu-
tion to, and participation in, this initiative.

CHOIR SCHOOL NEWS April, 2013
St. Paul summarizes quite nicely the importance of this Liturgical time of the year
when he writes in 1 Corinthians, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is fu-
tile, (and) you are still in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17). There is an incredible humility in this statement.
Our sins—that which oppresses us— is not overcome by OUR actions or efforts, but by Christ. In other
words, correcting sin requires surrendering our whole self to Christ.
One defining aspect of the 21st century is its focus on individualism. The life that many seek is one where
they are financially independent, stable, secure, and not in need of others support. The message of Easter is
radical because it challenges that notion of self-sufficiency and independence. On our own, we cannot save
ourselves. We must turn to Christ, trust in Christ, and rely on his sacrifice and resurrection.
It takes humility to recognize our need for others. It can be hard to admit one doesn’t understand some-
thing, is financially struggling, one is sick or weak, or one is afraid. For most, appearing powerful and confi-
dent is much easier. Yet, humility is so vital because it counters pride, one of the deadly sins. It was pride
that caused Adam and Eve to disobey God (a belief that they knew better than God when told not to eat
the fruit). It was also pride that caused Lucifer to turn against God. Pride can lead to the belief that one
doesn’t need to listen to God, that one knows better than God, or that one is just fine making his or her
own way in life. These are alluring feelings, but ones that lead us short of salvation promised to us at Easter.
The Easter message of salvation can only be accepted if we have humility. Ultimately, it is Christ, and not
me, who can fulfil my every need and desire.
In Christ,
Andrew Hume

This month a group of students from our grade 11 religion class attended the TCDSB
Voices That Challenge Conference at St. Michael’s College School. This group of aspiring
Catholic leaders was given the opportunity to experience a variety of speakers and work-
shops designed to help equip them with the tools that they need to make a difference in
their schools and the larger community.
All the young men are to be commended for their exemplary comportment and participa-
tion throughout this event!

In the high school, our virtue assembly for the month of March featured the launch of our House Flags.
Philip Ocampo and Phat Le worked tirelessly to conceptualize, design, and finalize these impressive flags.
Each of them captures the unique qualities of the house that it represents. During the assembly, the boys
provided an overview of their designs and presented them, on behalf of the school, to our House Captains
and Chairmen.
