Leoni, the leading provider ofcable systems to the automotivesector and other industries, hasequipped Barcelona Airport’s re-cently opened Terminal T1 withspecial supply cables, both for sta-tionery installation and mobileapplication.

Patented, highly resistant andat the same time extremely flex-ible high-voltage cables that sup-ply the aircraft with power on theground were thus installed at allgates with passenger boardingbridges.

Leoni supplied several kilome-tres of its BETAjet Deltaflex high-voltage cable via its subsidiary,Leoni Iberica, for Barcelona Air-port, which is operated by pub-licly-owned AENA. They are fittedat the gates of the new, recentlyopened Terminal T1 and supply air-craft with electrical power whilethey are on the ground. The ca-bles are used in two ways: On theone hand, they are installed as astationary feeder cable and con-duct power from the transformersto the underground pits on theramp. On the other hand, they areflexibly connecting the plane withthe pit. To do so the cables aredrawn from pits and plugged di-rectly into the aircraft’s socketwithout any interconnection.

Leoni feeds aircraft at Barcelona Airport’snew Terminal T1 with power

This permits ongoing use of air-craft electronics, air conditioning, lighting, galleys and other consum-ers of electricity – entirely with-out running aviation fuel-consum-ing jet engines or auxiliary powerunits. That is an advantage for air-port operators and airlines alike, since minimising CO2, reducingemissions and improving efficiencyare becoming more and more im-portant issues nowadays.

For their use at departure gatesthe cables employed have to fulfiltwo conditions above all. Giventhat the cables are frequentlydragged across the ground and arethereby exposed to severe me-chanical strain, the first is ex-tremely high resistance to abra-sion. The other requirement isgreat flexibility to rapidly connectthe aircraft and for easy stowingin the underground pit.

The 400 Hertz BETAjet cableused at Barcelona Airport has thesedifficult-to-combine properties. Itis extremely robust thanks to theuse of special materials and proc-esses. Its patented, twisted-sym-metrical 3-conductor coaxial con-struction simultaneously easeshandling and, furthermore, guar-antees minor as well as consistentvoltage loss even across lengths ofmore than 15 metres.

Barcelona Airport’s Terminal T1was built in the south of the sitefor about EUR 1.2 billion and has asize of more than 500,000 squaremetres. It is to be connected to thepublic transport system by 2014and to master the rising volume oftraffic. T1 has 101 gates, 43 pas-senger boarding bridges, 166check-in counters, 12,000 parkingspaces and can handle up to 25million passengers a year.

Crestron has added 60 new in-terface cable models to its selec-tion of Crestron Certified Wire. Fullysupporting the multiple signal typesutilized in AV systems today – includ-ing VGA, RCA, DVI, Category 2 HDMIand DisplayPort multimode –Crestron interface cables are avail-able in a variety of pre-terminatedlengths for faster, easier installation. The cable jackets are durable andflexible, with a UL CL3-rating for in-

“A Crestron end-to-end solutionsimplifies ordering and ensures sys-tem reliability and performance, andour line of interface cables now cov-ers virtually any system configura-tion,” said Vincent Bruno, CrestronDirector of Marketing. “They are highquality in every way, right down tothe 24k gold-plated connectors.”

Fifteen versions of Crestron MP-

WP wall plates support a wide se-lection of signal types / connectors, and are the perfect accessories forversatile and flexible system instal-lation. All MP-WPs are available inwhite or black, and install cleanlyin a single gang box using a stand-ard decorative faceplate. Plates maybe combined to provide just the rightwall, lectern or rack mount configu-ration and contingency for everyroom.

Draka is spearheading anothercampaign aimed at highlighting thedangers of installing electrical cablesthat fail to comply with the requiredregulatory standards. This time thecompany is focusing much-neededattention on the absence of cablemarking, without which there is nomeans of establishing the cable’s au-thenticity. In the absence of suchmarking there is every probabilitythat the quality and performance ofthe cable is highly suspect and is froma disreputable supplier.

Under the banner: “If it’s notmarked, it’s not worth it”, the cam-paign is aimed primarily at installersbut, Draka believes, it is a problemthat should also concern wholesalersand distributors, specifiers and build-ing control officers. Depending uponthe particular application, there is alegal obligation to include certain in-formation; the more demanding thespecification, the more informationis required to be shown on the cable.

Commenting on the Draka initia-tive Marketing Services Manager, Mark

Draka highlights the dangers of installingelectrical cables that fail to comply with

the required regulatory standards

Froggatt, says: “Every year millionsof metres of electrical cable are in-stalled in the UK and it is essential toknow that the cable being used is tothe correct specification. With nomarkings on the cable it is impossi-ble to know its origin and, more im-portant, whether you can trust thatit is safe to install.”

He continues: “This is not just anissue at the initial installation stage,it also a serious concern when cir-cuits are later modified. Fitting poorquality cable can have lethal impli-cations and leave the installer liableto prosecution.”

But what markings should a cablecarry? To help installers, Draka haspublished a freely-available pocketguide and has an explanatory videopresentation on its website. Both areavailable at www.drakauk.com. Thecompany is also inviting anyone whofinds unmarked or misleadinglymarked cable being installed to senda sample to Draka in support of thecampaign’s aims to achieve best prac-tice throughout the industry anderadicate this dangerous and repre-hensible practice.

Among the markings that should

be clearly visible on every cable arethe manufacturer’s name and theBritish Standard number to which thecable claims to conform. Providingthe cable has been tested by one,the name of the independent third-party approval organisation shouldalso be included. However, Draka isat pains to remind installers thatmerely stamping a BS number on acable is not evidence that it actu-ally complies.

“Without third-party approvalthere is absolutely no guarantee thatany of the claims made for the ca-ble are true,” continues MarkFroggatt. “Even if a third-party ap-proval organisation’s name is markedon the cable, if the installer has anydoubts whatsoever – particularly ifthe cable is imported – he shouldcheck the marking’s validity with theapproval organisation.”

Ducab is likely to register an11.84 per cent growth in productionof cables this year to 85,000 tonnes,up from last year’s 76,000 tonnes, atop official said.

“Due to growing demand, Ducabhas expanded its production capac-ity to 110,000 tonnes per annum, which could go up to 160,000 if needbe. This shows that the market isrevamping which is a very positivesign for Ducab,” Ahmad Al Shaikh, chairman of Ducab, told Gulf Newsin an interview.

However, a steep decline in thebase copper price might reduce lastyear’s turnover of Dh3.35 billion toDh2.5 billion.

Despite this, the manufactureris investing Dh875 million in capac-ity expansion, including a Dh250million plant in Qatar and a Dh500million high-voltage cable plant inDubai.

Ducab, which employs about 980professionals, is also restructuring

Saudi Cable Co has won acontract for 83 million Saudiriyals (Dh81 million) to supplycables for Saudi Aramco.

It has won a second cablecontract in a north African

country worth $23 million (Dh84 million), it said in twostatements to the Saudi bourse on Saturday.

Ducab planning Dh875m expansion

its production to maximise effi-ciency.

“Despite the current global eco-nomic crisis that has impacted theUAE and GCC markets, we feel thecapacity of Ducab will be needed tobe uplifted as demand is expectedto pick up from 2011 onwards whenmore projects are implemented.”

Ducab is investing in capacityexpansion. We will soon commissiona Dh125 million copper rod plant, which is currently undergoing test-ing and commissioning,” he said.

“We will soon commission a25,000 tonne capacity cable manu-facturing plant in Qatar, set up withan investment of Dh250 million.”

Faster returnThe government earlier an-

nounced a new high-voltage cableproject to be developed by Ducab. The high-voltage cable (400kw)project will be 50 per cent ownedby Ducab and the rest will be equallysplit between the Dubai Electricityand Water Authority (Dewa) and theAbu Dhabi Electricity and Water Au-thority (Adwea).

“With two major customers ofhigh-voltage cables on board asshareholders, the project is guaran-teed to offer a faster return on in-vestment,” Al Shaikh said.

The high-voltage unit will be op-erational by the end of 2010. Con-

struction of the project has alreadystarted and we expect the equip-ment to arrive by the second half ofnext year.

“With this we will manufacturehigh-voltage cable and extra-high-voltage cables. We will be the firstmanufacturers of such cables in theMiddle East. So it is an importantproject for us and a very significantdevelopment in our business,” headded.

The UAE cable demand is about180,000 copper tonnes per annumin which Ducab has roughly a 50 percent share. Cable demand across theGCC is about 770,000 tonnes peryear.

“We are striving to achieve a 25per cent market share in the region,”Al Shaikh said.

A steep decline in the base cop-per metal price from its peak of$8,300 per tonne in 2008 to the cur-rent $2,800 in the internationalmarket will impact Ducab’s annualturnover this year.

“Last year, our turnover reachedDh3.35 billion, up from Dh2.42 bil-lion in 2007. Fluctuation in base cop-per prices might reduce the turno-ver.

“This year, we expect this toreach Dh2.5 billion, simply due tothe lower metal price, although ourproduction will be higher,” he said.

SABIC Innovative Plastics hasannounced that LTK Industries, aleading Hong Kong-based wire andcable OEM and long-term customer,is driving the use of SABIC Innova-tive Plastics’ eco-progressive Flex-ible Noryl* resin into appliance wir-ing material (AWM) applicationsused in consumer electronics. Theadvanced flame-retardant (FR)resin passes the stringent Under-writers Laboratories (UL) VW-1flame test, and is helping manu-facturers like LTK meet tough glo-

SABIC Innovative Plastics’ eco-engineered FlexibleNoryl* resin wired for success with top perform-

ance properties for LTK’s AWM applicationsbal requirements for halogen-freeparts while delivering a virtuallyperfect balance of exceptionalhigh-performance properties. Byupgrading from polyvinyl chloride(PVC) – which can release hazard-ous toxins when burned – to Flex-ible Noryl resin, LTK has furtherstrengthened its position as a lead-ing global provider of wire and ca-ble solutions.

Flexible Noryl resin not onlyprovides a much better environ-mental choice vs. halogenatedmaterials like PVC, but also sur-passes other non-halogenated ma-terials, including thermoplasticelastomers (TPEs) and polyethylene(PE), with an excellent balance ofmechanical properties, flexibilityand color retention for which thematerial is known. It is also recy-clable in the original extrusionmanufacturing process while re-taining a high level of mechanicalperformance.

Many different wire and cableconstructions make up UnderwritersLaboratories’ AWM category, includ-ing single- and multi-conductor con-structions in a wide range of con-ductor sizes, insulation and jacketmaterials. Examples include USB

cable, HDMI cable and audio/videocable for consumer electronics. Thebasic standard used to evaluate AWMis UL 758, the Standard for Safety ofAppliance Wiring Material.

Previously, LTK used PVC for itsAWM products, but recognized theenvironmental drawbacks of thistraditional wire and cable coatingmaterial. However, the companywanted to substitute a materialthat provided non-halogenated FRand could be processed on its ex-isting extrusion equipment to keepcosts down. Finally, for a competi-tive advantage, LTK required high-end performance, including excel-lent tensile strength and elonga-tion, flexibility, heat aging, coldbending and aesthetics.

Based on its longstanding part-nership with SABIC Innovative Plas-tics and previous experience withFlexible Noryl resins in its AV ca-ble for flat-screen televisions, LTKselected several grades of the ma-terial for the AWM components. Inaddition to meeting all of the com-pany’s performance and environ-mental criteria, Flexible Norylresin offers a lower specific grav-ity than PVC, reducing the weightof the AWM parts.

Bulgin - New ATEX-approved connectors performin harsh environments

A new range of connectors de-signed for use in hazardous environ-ments, the EXPlora series, has beenintroduced by Bulgin.

Independently tested for compli-ance to ATEX standards for use inZone 2 and Zone 22 environments, the new EXP series is manufacturedfrom a tough high-grade UL94V-0rated Polycarbonate material. Simi-lar in construction to Bulgin’s popu-lar 900 Series Buccaneer, the con-nectors are environmentally sealedto IP68 to provide protection for themost severe of dust and water-borneenvironments. Ambient temperaturerange is from -20C to +55C.

Compact in design, the connectorsare available in 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 7- and10-pole variants and in four body styles- cable, in-line cable, panel and flangefixing. Each contact insert is availablewith either pin or socket contacts andeither can be used with any of thebody styles to give the maximumchoice of combinations. They arerated up to 18A, 600VAC/DC for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-poles, 16A, 430VAC/DC for7-pole and 10A, 250VAC/DC for 10-poles. The 3- 4-, 5- and 7-pole ver-

sions have leading earth contacts mak-ing them suitable for single- or three-phase applications.

The EXP series connectorachieves an environmental seal toIP68 as soon as the locking ring istightened, without any supplemen-tary sealing. Sealing caps, withstrong steel retaining cords, main-tain the sealing integrity when con-nectors are not mated. The IP68 rat-ing is tested submerged at 10m fortwo weeks.

Screw fixing terminal contacts, designed to accommodate conduc-tors up to 4mm2, require no specialtooling and allow the connector tobe easily terminated and maintained‘in the field’, while positive locationkeyways prohibit the possibility ofmis-connection. Two designs of ca-ble retention and alternative seal-ing glands allow for cable accept-ance from 7mm through to 22mmdiameter.

The connectors are designed fora wide variety of applications wherea secure, reliable and easy to ter-minate interface is required, par-ticularly for manufacturers supply-

ing machines, equipment and sys-tems where explosive atmospheresmight exist. As well the petrochemi-cal industries, this could include;mills and grain stores, paint and inkmanufacturers, timber mills andprocessors, cement works, shipyardsand sewage treatment.

The EXPlora range is most suitedto manufacturers of ancillary elec-trical equipment such as motors, pumps, lighting equipment, processand control gear for use in factoriesand plant where hazardous, or ex-plosive atmospheres can be causedby flammable gases, mists or va-pours or by combustible dusts, saysthe company.

New Generation Networks (NGN)will gradually become popular in mostdeveloped and developing countries, and eventually fully replace existingcopper based networks with modern, fast and powerful optical networks.Fibres will likely reach individualapartments (FTTH networks) offer-ing customers the magic of voice, data and HD video with fullinteractivity support.

This job will require the deploy-ment of millions of meters of fibreoptical cables in metropolitan areas,as well the need to joint (technicallyspeaking “to splice”) optical fibres andto branch them toward subscribers.

New optical closure range to address fiber to thehome (FTTH) networks

With TECK products, Belconn isaiming at introducing on the marketa reliable and effective solution toperform quality grade cable jointsand branches in a typical FTTH envi-ronment.

“From the time we started thisproject” Belconn’s spokeman said“we had three clear targets in mind:Usability, Reliability and Range; wedo believe we hit them all”.

Thanks to their unique “D shape”cross section design, TECK cansmoothly manage an impressivenumber of optical fiber cables, sig-nificantly more than the averageavailable in the marketplace. Moreo-

ver, TECK’s splicing cassette solutiongives the installation engineer effort-less access to individual optical cir-cuits, which is one of the most criti-cal requirements in metropolitanoptical networks.

TECK range includes 5 differentclosure size to deal with any instal-lation requirements.

Belconn is a leading italian manu-facturer of cables, connectors andaccessories for the telecommunica-tion and networking industry. Since2006, Belconn’s optical division hasbeen focusing on the development ofinnovative solutions for FTTH net-works.

Reliable Power and Signal Con-nections to Portable Instrumentsin Hazardous Areas is Assured byInstrumEx Connectors

Ensuring reliable power andsignal connections to portable in-struments is a challenge for manu-facturers, especially where damp-ness and explosive gasses may bepresent. Fern Communications hasovercome this on their FRX1 ra-dio signal repeater with the useof InstrumEx connectors fromHawke International.

In potentially explosive envi-ronments found in offshore andonshore oil and gas industries, radio communication is a safetyand operational priority. The qual-ity of radio can be compromisedwhen working in confined spacesor where surrounding structuresshield the signal, so the FRX1 isvital to ensure a strong signal getsthrough.

Hawke’s InstrumEx connectorsprovide a convenient secure andEx compliant cable connectionand so play a key role in maintain-ing the integrity of the FRX1. TheInstrumEx connector is ATEX andIECEx compliant and allows liveconnection and disconnection ofcircuits in zones 1, 2, 21 and 22.Integral to the design is the Hawkecable gland which has unique pat-ented features for secure clamp-

ing of all wire armour and braidedcable types. This is coupled withthe sealing and explosion protec-tion reliability expected fromHawke connection products inhazardous areas.

All connectors have heavy-duty, maintenance-free, nickelplated brass or stainless steelshells to give ingress protectionto IP66/67 and DTS01 and includemodels for in-line and bulkheadapplications. They have a uniquekeying system which prevents pos-sible misconnection and safe-guards the contacts from damage.Reliable low resistance connec-tions are ensured by the use ofMultilam Technology which re-quires less force to engage or dis-engage the gold plated multi-pinconnections.

The FRX1 is a robust sealedunit that is light and easy to han-dle but tough enough to cope withextreme site conditions. In off-shore and petrochemical environ-ments these may include exposureto potentially explosive gassesand to deluge by salt spray or bythe cleaning systems used to hosedown the rig. The integrity of theenclosure and all its connectionsare paramount so the marinegrade aluminium body of the FRX1is sealed to achieve IP66 classifi-cation.

Molex Incorporated has an-nounced the general availabilityof its innovative, OEM-provenMX123, a fully sealed, high-per-formance interconnect systemoptimized for transportationpower-train applications. TheMX123(TM) system maintains lowand stable contact resistanceunder severe temperatures andvibrations and is ideal for on-en-gine automotive applications, off-road construction and industrialequipment.

The MX123 system uses inter-facial and matte-seal technolo-gies to optimize sealing perform-ance and reduce package size andharness-assembly complexity. Itfeatures a matte seal technologythat allows closer-to-center ter-minal spacing and eliminates theneed for crimping individual ca-ble seals. The interfacial seal isinterior to the connector shroud, protecting it from damage dur-ing harness handling. Plus, theheader pins are protected fromscooping by a center wall that ex-tends longer than the terminallength.

The MX123 lever receptaclesmate with the MX123 verticalheaders, and are designed to pro-vide flexibility by offering twomounting-style options, threePCB electrical strategies and mul-tiple-plating options.
