Wildcats Move On With 45-37 WinDURANT — Rivals Durant and Wilton met in the first round
of the class 2A district tournament last Saturday, each hold-
ing a victory during the regular season against the other.
Saturday, it was a key run in the third quarter by Durant that
helped in a 45-37 victory. Durant will play at West Branch
Tuesday night at 6. The Wildcats won at West Branch while
the Bears returned the favor, beating Durant in Durant. The
Wildcats won a first round game for the second year in a
row.
“It was nice to just find a way to win tonight,” said Durant
head coach Doug Frett,”
“We didn’t have one of our best night’s offensive, but our
defense came through and was the key to the win. I thought
that the girls stayed strong and did what they needed to do.
It’s the old tournament mantra - survive and advance to the
next round and tonight we did,” he said.
Durant held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Shannon
Telsrow scored six of the 12 Wildcat points in the quar ter.
Jenna Brammeier had four points for the Beavers in the
opening quarter.
Each team scored six points in the second quarter with Du-
rant holding an 18-16 halftime lead. Durant took control of
the game in the third quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 30-20
lead after the third quarter.
Wilton however, seeing its season coming to an end, came
out on fire in the final quarter. Grace Austin drilled three,
three pointers in the quarter and helped the Beavers to a
17-11 run to get to within four points, 41-37 with just over
1:30 left in the game. The Beavers had a chance to cut the
lead to two with free throws, but missed and could get no
closer in the game.
Wilton coach Jeremy Putman said that his team had toomany turnovers (19) and that was a big difference in the
game.
“We had a lot of careless pa sses, passing before we looked,”
said Putman.
“They’d be open five seconds earlier and then we’d think
they’d be still open and we’d still make that pass.”
Putman said that despite the turnovers his team was still
able to battle back and remain in the game down to the
end.
“That’s what I told the girls right after the game. I was very
proud of their effort to get back into the game and try to
get a win. We played with a lot of fire in the fourth quarter
and I think that everyone on our bench was pretty excited,”
said Putman.
Durant shot near 50-percent for the game, making 18-of-
41 from the field. All five Durant starters had at least six
points in the ball game. Shannon Telsrow had a team high
10 points for the Wildcats. Telsrow scored six of her 10 in
the first quarter. She also had a team high 6 rebounds and 4
assists. Courtney Ralfs scored 8 points and had 6 rebounds,
4 steals and 2 assists. Jaclyn Ralfs had 6 points and a team
high 5 steals. Janey Botkins had 9 points including two
three pointers and Miranda Cox had 7 points. Wilton was led in scoring by Grace Austin and Jenna Bram-
meier with 14 points each. Olivia Reifert had 7 points and
15 rebounds and 3 assists. Brammeier had 6 rebounds and
3 assists.
Wilton ends their season at 7-15 overall. The Beavers lose
three seniors in Reifert, Brammeier and Kokjohn.

Third Time A Charm, Knights
On To Second Round Game BELLEVUE — The North Cedar Knights knew that it would
hard for Bellevue to beat them for a third time this season.
North Cedar lost both contests with Bellevue in the regular
season including their most recent one at Bellevue January
14 in a nine-point loss. However, the Knights pulled off a big
win, 56-43 to advance to the second round of the class 2Adistrict tournament. The first round win was the first, first-
round win for the Knights since 2006 when the Knights won
at Mt. Vernon.
North Cedar improved to 10-12 overall while Bellevue fin-
ished off their season 13-10. The Comets end the season on
a three-game losing streak.
North Cedar got a big momentum rush in the first quarter,
outscoring the Comets 12 to 4 in the first quarter. North Ce-
dar then used a 21-13 run in the second quarter to take a
33-17 haftime lead.
Bellevue trimmed the Knight lead by three in the third quar-
ter, but still trailed 45-32 after three quarters. Each team
scored 11 points in the final quarter of the game.
The Knights shot 39-percent for t he game and were 13-for-
23 from the free throw line.
North Cedar had four players reach double figures in scor-
ing in the game. That balance helped the Knights cause.
In their two prior meetings Bellevue had only two in each
game. Seniors Alison Malaby and Allison Jensen each had a
team high 12 points followed by Jordan Bendixen and Cort-
lyn Kasik with 10 points each.
Bellevue was led by the 1-2 punch of Ali Reeg with 21 and
Carly Ruebel with 14. North Cedar will play at second ranked Cascade Tuesday,
February 18. The Kni ghts have lost both games to the Cou-
gars including a 46-40 loss at Cascade in the first game of
this season. The Knights will have a tournament like game
to play in and can be big-time spoilers if they can replicate
their recent success they have showed on their current three-
game winning streak. North Cedar last played Cascade in
the postseason in 2007. That season, the Kni ghts nearly up-set the Cougars in Cascade during a 50-45 loss to Cascade
who was ranked 8th at the time of the game. Cascade is
ranked #2 and has a 22-0 record coming into the game.

GOOSE LAKE — The Tipton girl’s basketball season came to
an abrupt end last Saturday at Northeast Goose Lake. There,
the hometown Rebels took a 56-33 first round contest, end-
ing the Tigers season. Tipton bows out of the class 3A district
tournament with a record of 5-18 overall. The Tigers end the
season with three straight losses. Tipton lost 55-14 at North-
east Goose Lake earlier this season. Nort heast improved to17-6 and will play Camanche in the next round.
The Rebels took the Tigers out of the basketball game in just
one-quarter. Northeast used a 22-6 run in the first quarter
to build a comfortable lead. The Rebels then outscored Tip-
ton 10 to 8 in the second quarter to take a 32-14 lead into
halftime.
The Rebels came out after halftime and scored the first eight
points of the half to take a 40-14 lead, effectively ending any
thoughts of a Tiger comeback. In the quarter, Tipton out-
scored the Rebels from that point on, 12 to 11, but trailed
51-26 after three quarters. Tipton finally outscored the Reb-
els in the final quarter, 7 to 5, but is was too little, too late.
The Tigers made 12 field goals in the game and only 8-of-
16 of their free throw attempts. Jill Kofron scored 15 points
for the Tigers. The Rebels held the other Tipton starters to
10 points combined. Carsyn Grage, Kelsey Lange and Ellie
Siech each had three points in the loss.
Northeast made 22 field goals in the game and made 8-of-
12 free throws in the game. Three Rebels reached double
figures in the game led by Addie Obermann with 16. Alee-
nah Marcucci scored 12 and Breanne Butler scored 11 for the
Rebels.
