Wildcats Move On With 45-37 Win DURANT — Rivals Durant and Wilton met in the rst round of the class 2A district tournament last Saturday, each hold- ing a victory during the regular season against the other. Saturday, it was a key run in the third quarter by Durant that helped in a 45-37 victory. Durant will play at West Branch  Tuesday night at 6. The Wildcats won at West Branch while the Bears returned the favor, beating D urant in Durant. The Wildcats won a rst round game for the second year in a row.  “It was nice to just nd a way to win tonight,” said Durant head coach Doug Frett,” “We didn’t have one of our best night’s oensive, but our defense came through and was the key to the win. I thought that the girls stayed strong and did what they needed to do. It’s the old tournament mantra - survive and advance to the next round and tonight we did,” he said.  Durant held a 12-10 lead after the rst quarter. Shannon  Telsrow scored six of the 12 Wildcat points in the quar ter. Jenna Brammeier had four points for the Beavers in the opening quarter. Each team scored six points in the second quarter with Du- rant holding an 18-16 halftime lead. Durant took control of the game in the third quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 30-20 lead after the third quarter.  Wilton however, seeing its season coming to an end, came out on re in the nal quarter. Grace Austin drilled three, three pointers in the quarter and helped the Beavers to a 17-11 run to get to within four points, 41-37 with just over 1:30 left in the game. The Beavers had a chance to cut the lead to two with free throws, but missed and could get no closer in the game.  Wilton coach Jeremy Putman said that his team had too many turnovers (19) and that was a big dierence in the game.  “We had a lot of careless pa sses, passing before we looked, said Putman.  “They’d be open ve seconds earlier and then we’d think they’d be still open and we’d still make that pass.”  Putman said that despite the turnovers his team was still able to battle back and remain in the game down to the end.  “That’s what I tol d the girls right after the game. I was very proud of their eort to get back into the game and try to get a win. We played with a lot of re in the fourth quarter and I think that everyone on our bench was pretty excited,” said Putman.  Durant shot near 50-percent for the game, making 18-of- 41 from the eld. All ve Durant starters had at least six Third Time A Charm, Knights On T o Sec ond Roun d Game  BELLEVUE — The North Cedar Knights knew that it would hard for Bellevue to beat them for a third time this season. North Cedar lost both contests with Bellevue in the regular season including their most recent one at Bellevue January 14 in a nine-point loss. However, the Knights pulled oa big win, 56-43 to advance to the second round of the class 2A district tournament. The rst round win was the rst, rst- round win for the Knights since 2006 when the Knights won at Mt. Vernon.  North Cedar improved to 10-12 overall while Bellevue n- ished otheir season 13-10. The Comets end the season on a three-game losing streak.  North Cedar got a big momentum rush in the rst quarter, outscoring the Comets 12 to 4 in the rst quarter. North Ce- dar then used a 21-13 run in the second quarter to take a 33-17 haftime lead.  Bellevue trimmed the Knight lead by three in the third quar- ter, but still trailed 45 -32 after three quarters. Each team scored 11 points in the nal quarter of the game.  The Knights shot 39-percent for t he game and were 13-for- 23 from the free throw line.  North Cedar had four players reach double gures in scor- ing in the game. That balance helped the Knights cause. In their two prior meetings Bellevue had only two in each game. Seniors Alison Malaby and Allison Jensen each had a team high 12 points followed by Jordan Bendixen and Cort- lyn Kasik with 10 points each.  Bellevue was led by the 1-2 punch of Ali Reeg with 21 and Carly Ruebel with 14.  North Cedar will play at second ranked Cascade Tuesday, February 18. The Kni ghts have lost both games to the Cou- gars including a 46-40 loss at Cascade in the rst game of this season. The Knights will have a tournament like game to play in and can be big-time spoilers if they can replicate their recent success they have showed on their current three- game winning streak. North Cedar last played Cascade in the postseason in 2007. That season, the Kni ghts nearly up- set the Cougars in Cascade during a 50-45 loss to Cascade who was ranked 8th at the time of the game. Cascade is ranked #2 and has a 22-0 record coming into the game. There, the hometown Rebels took a 56-33 rst round contest, end- ing the Tigers season. Tipton bows out of the class 3A district tournament with a record of 5-18 overall. The Tigers end the season with three straight losses. Tipton lost 55-14 at North- east Goose Lake earlier this season. Nort heast improved to 17-6 and will play Camanche in the next round.  The Rebels took the Tigers out of the basketball game in just one-quarter. Northeast used a 22-6 run in the rst q uarter to build a comfortable lead. The Rebels then outscored Tip- ton 10 to 8 in the second quarter to take a 32-14 lead into halftime.  The Rebels came out after halftime and s cored the rst eight points of the half to take a 40-14 lead, eectively ending any thoughts of a Tiger comeback. In the quarter, Tipton out- scored the Rebels from that point on, 12 to 11, but trailed 51-26 after three quarters. Tipton nally outscored the Reb- els in the nal quarter, 7 to 5, but is was too little, too late.  The Tigers made 12 eld goals in the game and only 8-of- 16 of their free throw attempts. Wildcats Move On With 45-37 WinDURANT — Rivals Durant and Wilton met in the first round

of the class 2A district tournament last Saturday, each hold-

ing a victory during the regular season against the other.

Saturday, it was a key run in the third quarter by Durant that

helped in a 45-37 victory. Durant will play at West Branch

 Tuesday night at 6. The Wildcats won at West Branch while

the Bears returned the favor, beating Durant in Durant. The

Wildcats won a first round game for the second year in a

row.

 “It was nice to just find a way to win tonight,” said Durant

head coach Doug Frett,”

“We didn’t have one of our best night’s offensive, but our

4 steals and 2 assists. Jaclyn Ralfs had 6 points and a team

high 5 steals. Janey Botkins had 9 points including two

three pointers and Miranda Cox had 7 points. Wilton was led in scoring by Grace Austin and Jenna Bram-

meier with 14 points each. Olivia Reifert had 7 points and

15 rebounds and 3 assists. Brammeier had 6 rebounds and

3 assists.

Wilton ends their season at 7-15 overall. The Beavers lose

three seniors in Reifert, Brammeier and Kokjohn.

 GOOSE LAKE — The Tipton girl’s basketball season came to
