Jakarta has been getting a soaking lately with torrential rains falling from the skies just about every day which causes its share of problems around the city with those manic traffic jams becoming the norm once again, but at least it’s helping to keep the temperatures cooler. And keeping cool heads is something everybody needs when dealing with that almost stagnant traffic.

So while the rains are pouring down, take a chance to enjoy some shows as we move towards the Christmas and New Year’s period and the end of another year and the parties that come with that. In the next couple of weeks there are two big shows and both in the Senayan area. First off on December 1, the London Underground Night will be pulling into the tunnel at the Jakarta Convention Centre with a group of major DJs from around the world, and then the massive Jakarta Warehouse Project is back for another multi-stage extravaganza and will be held on the next weekend on Friday December 7.

Other shows to watch out for in the next two weeks are the US mega-star Jennifer Lopez for the first time playing live in Jakarta with a massive show and backup crew up in Ancol on Friday November 30 and one of the hottest DJs going around, DJ R3hab spinning tunes at Immigrant the next evening. Also something for the older crew, watch out for the Retro United concert at Senayan Tenis Indoor featuring the Commodores on Sunday December 2.

There are plenty other shows on offer around the city in the next two weeks too, so just go to the Whats On and HereNow sections inside for more.

HailS FromTorbay, England

Kesha has been in love with music since she was a wee little grommet in England. She grew up in a family who were passionate about music and eventually found herself in Bali. In 2009 she wanted to try something else besides surfing and began learning how to DJ. Her sounds of choice were progressive house and electro. Celebrated names who inspired her were Havana Brown, Afrojack, R3hab, and local talent, Angger Dimas. In 2010 Kesha moved to Australia to work there and her meeting with the Far East Movement proved to be a turning point in her career when she was encouraged to pursue a life of DJing. Acting on that advice, Kesha moved back to Bali to focus on making people dance. She embraces a wide range of styles from chill out, mash up, house, deep tech, to trance. She is currently managed by Elite Sounds Bali.

Under Elite Sounds, Kesha is constantly performing in numerous programs, private parties, and big events. On November 30 Kesha will visit Jakarta’s LUV’s Bar & Dine for the after party of the Super4Four, LUV’s 4th anniversary celebration.

Terakhir kali menghentak khalayak lewat Magnet!

album tergresnya bertajuk Katalika.

Jakarta new wave veterans, The Upstairs, are back. Following the release of their last album, Magnet! Magnet! in 2009

they went on quite a long hiatus. A few weeks ago they finally showed up again with strong new record called Katalika.

According to the group, who have been around since October 2001, this fourth composition is to celebrate their 11th anniversary and is also a special gift, a thank you gesture to their die-hard fans, Modern Darlings.

Now as a trio formation (plus two supporting musicians) includes Jimi Multhazam (vocal), Andre Idris (guitar), and Beni Adhiantoro (drums). The band considers Katalika as the starting point of their evolution from a loud and aggro collective into a calmer and more mature group-musically speaking. The arrangement, lyrics and sound have acquired a softer, more laid-back quality. Even in their fashion style they have moved away from the dramatic bright neon they have been famous for towards a lower profile with safe and steady colors. Although, Jimi’s quirky Jagger-esque meets Iggy dance moves will remain the same.

I recent history, the Indonesian music industry has been bombarded with mellow heartbreak tunes from various singers or bands. There have been plenty of boybands or singers that only sell their physical appearance rather than their vocal skills, which is kind of sad. But now there is new hope for the

Indonesian music scene thanks to Tulus.

He’s a talented singer-songwriter from Bandung with a distinctive sense of jazz. His eponymous debut album was well received by the public, and particularly by young people. On September 28th of last year, he launched the album at the Centre Cultural Français (CCF) Bandung through a very special solo concert and got a standing ovation from the crowd.

It all began when he captured the hearts of music listeners with the first single “Sewindu”, a song about a man that was left behind by the woman he loved. This single received positive reviews and reached the top of the charts at many radio stations and stayed there for weeks.

There are 10 songs in this album that present the nuances of easy listening and

A mAn who brings pAssion And sincerity to his music.

pop jazz with romantic lyrics. The majority of the lyrics that he wrote originally were created from his short stories, so basically, he conceptualized the songs from the story lines that came sincerely from his heart.

For example, “Tuan Nona Kesepian” is a story-telling song about a man and a woman constantly imposing their love on someone who doesn’t love them within a simple acoustic jazz arrangement.

On the track called “Teman Hidup”, Tulus shared his thoughts about the beauty of everlasting love. The music video concept is different because it gives an epic romantic feeling with the visualization of traditional Javanese culture on it.

The interplay between piano and bass dominate the content of “Diorama”, we can feel the unique mysterious detective movie scene here mixed with bluesy flavor.

Furthermore, listen to the smooth chill jazz love song called “Jatuh Cinta”, and the up-tempo swing jazz flared “Kisah Sebentar” and “Teman Pesta” that will make you move your body!

Beautiful poetical lyrics in Bahasa Indonesia in almost all tracks become his smooth-powerful weapon. They contain meaningful words about love, trust, and hope.

He has been performing in a total of more than 100 stages in the last 12 months of his career, entertaining music lovers all over Indonesia, including on a big scale stages, such as Java Soulnation Festival and Java Jazz Festival.

Last May, he held a charity event called the Tulus Beyond Sincere Concert in collaboration with the Trust Group Asia in Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. Not only to embraced a wider audience and share his sincere music, but also to share a precious mission to help Rumah Pintar Dadap, an initiated program conducted by Yayasan Tunggadewi and Yayasan Pansophia Indonesia that has a mission to expand and help more children in need of education.

It is fair to say, as a new young performer, Tulus has successfully brought fresh air to the Indonesian music industry with his deep rich voice, unique melodious jazzy songs wrapped in poetic lyrics that make him stand out from the rest.

ANNA SUI’S INTERPRETATION OF COACH’S ICONIC

DUFFLE BAG

Oh, I’m pretty sure you all are familiar with the ‘it bag’ of this season. It’s none other than the

iconic Coach duffle bag that we always hysterically scream and cry over. It fits every criteria that an it bag should have; a signature

look that’s easily recognizable without being too obvious, a classic shape and a roomy, everyday bag quality.

Although we’ve all fallen in love with the classic take on the Coach duffle bag, they’ve re-invented

it with splashing bright colours. And that’s not all.

Apparently, Coach is collaborating with Anna Sui and she chose to give her own interpretation to the

duffle bag and instilled a dose of the quirkiness she’s well known for. It was debuted during her fashion show on

February 15 and it’s available at Coach stores worldwide from November.

by AmAliA HAyAti

Anna Sui added a touch of Boho with whip-stitching technique and large fringe as well as applying the nouveau art dragonfly to make this duffle bag her own. The two limited edition bags are named Fleur-de-Lis and Dragonfly. It shows Anna Sui’s signature style vividly in combination with the classic design duffle. If you’re looking for a fun bag, this is definitely it.

But I’m not too sure about these two bags. Sure, they’re different from other duffle bags at the store, but the charm of the duffle bag from Coach actually lies in its timeless look. I’m not so sure I’d call these two timeless, unless this sort of look is for you.

What do you think, girls? Yay or nay? Do you think we better stick with the classic take on Coach duffle bag?

Are you familiar with this bag?

Considered as one of today’s greatest contemporary filmmakers, Director Ang Lee has created a ground breaking movie adapted from the bestselling novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel. The story is about a boy surviving in the middle of Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat with a fearsome Bengal tiger. You can bet it will be an epic journey of survival and introspection.

This is the first film by director Dan Bradley, who formerly was a stunt coordinator in many big Hollywood action films. It isn’t easy to run a full orchestra in a country like Indonesia, especially when some people still think that dangdut is

the country’s music. However, some orchestras managed not only to survive but evolve and get stronger with time. One of those respected orchestras is none other than the Jakarta Concert Orchestra.

Avip Priatna and Mrs. Toeti Heraty Roosseno founded this orchestra back in 2002 and named it the Jakarta Chamber Orchestra. Members of this orchestra are a combination of musicians from Jakarta and Yogyakarta, and Avip Priatna was the conductor. During their 10-year career, Jakarta Chamber Orchestra has worked with many great performers both local and international, such as Iswargia Soedarno, Ananda Sukarlan, Christopher Abimanyu, Binu Sukaman, Aning Katamsi to Miwako Fikushi, Pavel Sedov, Vitaly Yunitsky,Lavinia Meijer and Adam Gyorgy among others.

As a big orchestra, Jakarta Chamber Orchestra (JCO) has also performed some opera productions such as Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Sains Saent’s Samson et Dalilah and Menotti’s The Telephone with the Indonesian Opera Society. In 2011, the Jakarta Chamber Orchestra transformed itself to be Jakarta Concert Orchestra. This year, JCO marked its 10-year anniversary and are going to celebrate it by putting up a concert at Aula Simfonia Jakarta on this coming December 1.

From Russia With Love1 December 2012 starting from 19.30 onwards

Aula Simfonia JakartaFor more information: +6221-720 1918, +62-858 1414 2277 or [email protected]

The theme: “From Russia With Love” is chosen for this concert celebration, featuring compositions made by Russian composers. Their four-piece music compositions are not only renowned but also fun to listen to. It will begin with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D-Minor Op. 30, and continue with Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker Suite Op. 71A and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Polonaise from The Christmas Eve opera, before ending with Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor opera.

JCO is also inviting the famous Ukrainian pianist: Alexey Botvinov to be the guest star on this concert. The winner of prestigious competitions such as 1st Rachmaninoff Competition in Moscow, 1st Clara-Schumann Competition in Dussledorf and the 8th International Bach Competion in Leipzig; Alexey Botvinov is known as one of the best specialists in Rachmaninoff music worldwide. His deeply expressed, suggestive artistic interpretations of all major piano styles make him an extraordinary pianist. He is the only current pianist who performed Bach’s masterpiece “Goldberg Variations” more than 250 times live on stage. As the honored artist of Ukraine, this visit to Jakarta is his first ever.

We would like to congratulate Avip Priatna and Jakarta Concert Orchestra for all the hard work and great spirit on keeping classical music in Indonesia alive. For all classical music aficionados in Jakarta, this concert is definitely not to be missed!

This exhibition depicts the artist’s view on an evolving city, Jakarta. The Rapid transformation and the constant change of the people that was brought about by and by as the nation and city opened their arms to western influences and ideals. In the past, Jakarta was dubbed the big village by an old time artist/author. This however, was met by a very negative and angry response by the governor of that time. The aim of this exhibition is to reveal pictures by the city council for the new age Jakartans to see and understand how the city has evolved over the years and the amount of struggles it has seen.A lot of effort and time went in to the planning of this event because everything was researched and precisely put according to data that they have collected all these years. This is event will

also include a dialogue session between curators, artist, city council representatives and the public. This would be an interesting event to pop up in. Galeri Cipta III Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jl.Cikini Raya No. 73 Jakarta Pusat

Kadir Van Lohuizen is an award winning photojournalist who is now presenting his work in conjunction with the Erasmus Huis & Permata bank. This exhibition documents a 12-month journey along the Pan-American highway, investigating contemporary migration in the Americas. The artist based in Amsterdam has published four photo books including Diamond Matters and Rivers. In September 2007, Kadir and ten others established the photo agency and foundation NOOR. Kadir became a member of the supervisory board for World Press Photo in 2008. But long before he was a well known photojournalist, Kadir was a sailor and started a shelter for the homeless and drug addicts. He was also an activist in the Dutch squatter movement.KVL has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his long-term projects on the seven rivers of the world, the diamond industry and migration in the Americas. He has received numerous prizes for his work, including two World Press Photo awards. Erasmus Huis Jl. HR Rasuna Said Kav. S – 3 Jakarta

An exhibition that was put together to retell the story of colonial Indonesia. This event was conceptualized by Noorderlicht, a famous photography institute in the Netherlands as an investigative-style photography exhibition that compares globalization through the commodity of sugar. Sounds sweet doesn’t it?A tasty story of sugar’s impact on the Netherlands, Brazil, Suriname and Indonesia who were commonly bound through colonialism and a comparative research on the condition of the sugar industry from the 19th century to the 21st century. This Exhibition is presented by RuangRupa in a close and cozy concept that comes with video presentations and public discussions to really magnify the story and effect of sugar not only in our lives but also in the shaping of nations. hen talking about Chinese food in Jakarta, Jun Njan usually comes up on

top of most foodies’ minds. The name roughly means “Remember your heritage”;

and this family business, started in the mid-1950s with a humble eatery in the Tanjung Priok area. They later moved to Jalan Batu Ceper in the 70s where Jun Njan gained legendary status as the place for great Chinese cuisine in Jakarta. Over the decades and many outlets later, Jun Njan has become a veritable institution, drawing diners for their hearty Chinese favorites. The well-loved brand succeeds with consistently good food and efficient service.

We recently visited their outlet on Jalan Arteri Pondok Indah, about halfway between Gandaria City Mall and Pondok Indah Mall. This no-frills restaurant may not have the flashy décor or the ambiance of some of the larger Chinese restaurants in town, but instead it focuses on excelling at one thing: great food! With each dish carefully prepared and consistently reliable, you will never be let down.

The service is quick, efficient, and non-intrusive. We could see that almost all of the loyal staff here has been in the restaurant for a good number of years. These are the faces that have stayed with the restaurant through thick and thin; just like members of the family. That is a good sign of a quality establishment and most of the menu still use the same old recipes from the Batu Ceper era. Of course, there are also some new and improved dishes. You gotta keep up with the times, right?

The piping hot and appetizing Asparagus Soup with Crab Meat (30k) was a great starter, which transported us to the good old days. If there’s a dish that can make you feel warm all over, then this is the one!

The other delicious dishes came thick and fast with most of the dishes here coming in three portions (small, medium, and large), it is nice to be able to order according to the size of your party.

The Fresh Squid with Jun Njan Sauce (60k S/85k M/110k L) is one great dish; the flavorful sauce complemented the squid very nicely. Next up is the Fried Pigeon with Salt and Chili topping (36k/pcs). The wonderful topping really takes the breaded pigeon to a whole new level. Our order of the Deep Fried Frog Legs with Butter Sauce (60k S/70k M/90k L) is another of the old favorite, as is the Steamed Carp Fish in Jun Njan Sauce (13.5k per 100gr)

We also went for the Sautéed Kailan in Hong Kong-style Sauce (38k). The veggies are wok-tossed to perfection, and topped with a tasty, garlicky sauce.

But for us, the best dish that night was the Sautéed Crab in Chili Sauce (28k per 100gr). Written as ‘Kepiting Saus Padang’ (Crab in Padang sauce), it is actually closer in taste to that of a Singapore’s Chili Crab. Never mind the name; it is one heck of a delectable dish! The mouth-watering sauce was full of herbs and spices, and the crab was just succulent. So roll up your sleeves, and be prepared for a noisy, messy finger-licking good time!

Jun Njan is one of the favorite places in town for excellent quality Chinese cuisine in town, and it’s easy to see why. With a heritage as rich as the food itself, you know that you’re in for a tasty treat! (Budi Iskandar)

L ocated in the shop/office complex at Patal Senayan, Plan B is the brainchild of Chef Oskar Urzelai, a Basque native from the city

of San Sebastian in Spain. He wanted to develop Spanish cuisine with his unique Basque touch in Jakarta and the gregarious Chef has experienced working with friend and mentor Martin Berasategui, a much-respected Michelin chef who helped elevate his native Basque cuisine to a new level internationally.

After stints in Spain, the Carribean, and Singapore, Chef Oskar opened Plan B last May in Jakarta. The vibe is casual and warm and it’s very cozy being neither too big nor too small, with an atmosphere of a neighborhood café.

The kitchen uses authentic Spanish ingredients to make sure that every dish tastes as genuine as possible. Chef Oskar uses only Spanish cheeses,

Spanish saffron for the signature paellas, Spanish extra virgin olive oil, and even Spanish salt (he introduced us to Sal de Añana, a special brand of salt which he calls ‘the Rolls Royce of salt’). The commitment to his craft is commendable.

On with the food. At Plan B, the Chef and his staff whip up a wide array of typical tapas (or pintxos, in Basque) dishes and more. A couple of dishes started us off nicely; the Patatas Bravas (22k) - fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and spicy tomato sauce, and the Pisto Manchego con Huevo de Codorniz (28k) - sautéed mixed vegetables with poached quail eggs.

If you feel like having something with a spicy kick, the Pimentos Rellenos de Gambas (32k), or green peppers stuffed with prawns, will do the trick. The peppers have quite a tantalizing level of hotness. The Gambas al Ajillo (35k) - prawns sautéed with garlic and parsley, is another typical favorite tapas dish here. Now, the Pulpo a la Gallega (40k) - succulent octopus in potato and paprika oil sauce, may look like something out of an alien movie. But make no mistake, it is one palatable dish!

At Plan B, diners can’t get enough of the delectable Paellas. There’s Paella de Marisco (130k), the ever popular seafood paella. And for a bit of twist, there’s Arroz Negro (130k), a typical black-colored paella dish from Catalan, cooked in squid ink with seafood and garlic mayonnaise. It is really a sight to behold.

The Pargo en Salsa Verde (70k) or red snapper with prawns, boiled egg, white asparagus, and green peas, in garlic and parsley sauce, is yet another noteworthy dish here.

And of course, that Spanish concoction that is the Sangria (45k/glass, 175k/pitcher) is the perfect drink to wash down all the savoury taste. There’s also quite an extensive selection of Spanish wine at Plan B. We like it!

As for dessert, the Tarta de Limon con Salsa de Toffee (25k) - lemon tart with toffee sauce, is a scrumptious juxtaposition of tart and sweetness, but you just have to try the Tarta de Manzana al Estilo Maria Antonia (25k); an apple cake based on Chef Oskar’s mother’s recipe. He explained that this dessert takes him to his childhood days. There’s nothing like mom’s cooking.

At Plan B, you can be assured that these are traditional dishes that will leave you feeling as though you’ve taken a tasty tour of Spain. Gracias, Chef Oskar, for bringing an authentic, appetizing piece of your country to Jakarta. (Budi Iskandar)
