Summer Services 2015

The weekend of June 26-27 marks the beginning of the summer Shabbat service schedule. Through the end of August, all Friday evening services begin at 6:30 PM and all Saturday morning services begin at 9:30 AM, following an 8:30 AM session of Parashat HaShavuah.

All services are led by members of the clergy. To ensure that our worship continues with vigor and spirit throughout this slower paced time of year, as well as to be certain those who come to say kaddish are able to do so in a warm, friendly setting, we ask each Temple member to make an effort to attend Saturday morning services at least once during the summer. A critical mass of worshippers makes a wonderful difference for all who are present. With thanks for your collaboration, and best wishes for a restful and relaxing summer.

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin Third Series: False Messiahs Tuesdays, June 2, 7:00 PM. last in the series False messiahs dot our history, in Crete in 431 and Bagdad in 870, Rome in 1524 and the apoc-alyptic year of 1666, when the infamous Turk Shabbatai Tzvi threw Europe into turmoil. Some a century ago considered Herzl a false messiah and some today see the continued Lubavitch devotion to the late Rabbi Schneersohn as messianic fervor. In these sessions we will discuss just what Judaism considers a messiah, why the followers thought these individuals fit the bill, and read primary documents from the time of a number of the false messiahs. In addition to learning their stories – riveting and bizarre and sometimes even racy – we will see if there is a discernible historical pattern which could predict when one might arise.

Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin Spring/Summer 2015 Israel: The nation of the People of the Book has produced some of the most respected works of international fiction. These two different books – the first a political novel the second an explo-ration of Orthodox courtship in contemporary Israel – are by authors who have earned and are earning impressive reputations.

Thursday, June 4, 2015, 7:30 PM To the End of the Land by David Grossman To the End of the Land, published in 2008, is dedicated to Grossman's son Uri, killed in the

2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon. The plot tells the tale of Ora, a mother looking forward to welcoming her son home from a long deployment. When he is redeployed before making it home, Ora suddenly leaves on a long hike – to the end of the land - her clear aim not to be home if someone official comes calling. Grossman illuminates the unique dynamics of the Israel family, dynamics that are often trying beyond belief.

Thursday, July 9, 2015, 7:30 PM In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist by Ruchama King Feuerman

Critics loved New Jersey resident Fuereman's first book, Seven Blessings, and they love this one, a National Jewish Book Award finalist, as well. (Both Hadas-sah and the Wall Street Journal loved it!) Newly orthodox Isaac Markowitz moves to Israel, and works as assistant to an elderly rabbi. He meets Tamar, also a new-ly Orthodox American, and the two of them befriend Mustafa, a janitor on the Temple Mount. Mustafa finds an ancient pottery shard, and the plot unrolls from there, taking us on an examination of observant love, Jewish/Muslim relations in Israel, the horrors of bureaucracy, and yet another way of understand the Jewish

state and those who live there.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

TBA ANNUAL GIVING — PARTNERS IN LEADERSHIP 2015-2016

We are excited to report that last year’s Annual Giving—Partners in Leadership program was a huge success. Temple B'nai Abraham is strong, both financially and socially, and we have you, the members, to thank for reaching our goal. However, in order to keep the Temple's future secure we are asking for your support again. Our congregation, founded in 1853, maintains meaningful religious services, exceptional clergy and staff, and high standards of programming and

education for all. Every year TBA looks to enhance its programs and build its membership, but dues alone is not enough. Annual Giving allows TBA to balance its budget and to stay financial-ly sound. We have only been able to accomplish this because of YOUR generosity! Your support of Temple B'nai Abraham is of great value and it is our goal to make it rewarding as well. Listed below are the various levels of giving: TBA Annual Giving — Partners in Leadership President’s Circle $5,000 and above Torah Circle $2,500-$4,999 1853 Society $1,853-$2,499 Rabbi’s Circle $1,000-$1,852 Mitzvah Circle $500-$999 Circle of Friends $100-$499

Tzedakah is part of the Jewish way of life. We thank you in advance for your participation in TBA's Annual Giving program. Let's ALL support Temple B'nai Abraham together and be Part-ners in Leadership!
