New Decking Area Outside Clubhouse

New Procedure for Signing Out

Tayside Aviation has introduced a more efficient signing out procedure.

Each PPL / NPPL pilot should fill in a Declaration Form with the latest dates for Membership / SEP / PPL(A) / Medical etc and certify that they have flown within the last 6 weeks.

You are also signing to confirm that you will have carried out the necessary calculations for weight and balance, fuel requirements and take off and landing requirements.

This should be shown to the instructor to whom you are requesting authorisation for your flight.

Then you should leave the form in the folder on the Ops desk.

Remember to collect the form when you sign back in again.

You only need to fill this form in again when any of the dates change.

Please use the attached form as a template to which you can print and complete with your own personal details….

Pilot Profile - Tom Hall (14 years)

I was 9 years old when I got ‘into’ aircraft and flying. It all began when I read an article on the amazing supersonic aircraft- Concorde. I then started to think how exciting it would be to learn to fly a plane. My mum and dad bought me a trial flight at Scone Airport for my 10th birthday where I flew in the Cessna 152 with Dai Heather-Hayes. It was a fantastic day and ever since I was hooked!

I try to get a flight every month, but the typical Scottish weather is not always on my side! To date I have had 30 flights and have covered most of the PPL syllabus, but since the hours I have didn’t count until I was 14, I only have 5 hours that officially count in my log-book. I have flown with many instructors, all of which are very professional and extremely knowledgeable. I have also been attending the Ground School classes by John Stewart which are very useful and great fun. They are currently held on the first Tuesday of the month.

I have now transitioned to the Grob 115, which is a brilliant aircraft to fly. The canopy makes for good visibility and I love it on the takeoff when you are pushed back in your seat, it really is out of this world! I look forward to my 16th birthday in December when I can fly solo. Hopefully the weather will be CAVOK that day!

In the future I would love to become a commercial pilot and sit in the left hand seat of a Boeing or Airbus. I think this would be amazing and you get paid lots for something you love doing!

I am also astounded at how good Flight Simulator is as a training aid. It has helped me greatly understand more complicated approaches such as VOR, NDB, ILS etc. I am look-ing forward to the release of the VFR photographic scenery for Scotland which means I can practice VFR NAV around Dundee.

I have built a flight simulator in my bedroom which utilizes professional flight controls and software from Elite. It is brilliant for IFR flying as Elite is FAA approved. If any club mem-ber would like a shot, please email me at: [email protected]

Day Trip to Islay

On the 30th of July 2009, my brother Colin and my good friend and colleague Alex - from my training days in Holland decided to embark on an entertaining and enjoyable flight to a sunny destination. But where could we go...?

Inverness? Carlisle? How about Oban or Campbeltown? Having mentioned the word sunny, Inverness was quickly dropped. Carlisle soon followed for a reason I can’t remember, Campbeltown had no Avgas, and Oban… well everyone goes to Oban!

So where now? A curious looking Island called Islay half way to Ireland caught our attention. Its airport had all the facilities required, and the route to get there seemed very interesting. We then checked the weather, and apart from some strong winds it seemed safe enough for the trip.

We set off in G-EVIE past Errol and towards Perth. Colin was in the left seat and Alex was next to him. As we were climbing out we noticed that Colin’s mike wasn’t transmitting very well, so it was up to Alex to take over the Radio’s. He still needed to get used to his new call sign though:

Tower: “G-EVIE report passing abeam Errol”

G-EVIE: “Report passing abeam Errol, KLM… ehh correction G-EVIE”

After Perth, we headed for Helensburgh, passing over Loch Lomond and some spectacular scenery on the way. From Helensburgh we went over Loch Fyne, crossed the Sound of Jura and coasted in at Tarbert.

Day Trip to Islay

All three of us agreed that the views were stunning, especially with the rays of sunlight finding holes in the cloud layers and striking the surface. Alex- still wondering where his FMS had gone was certainly enjoying navigating by hand over the feature-full landscape.

We approached Islay airport (EGPI) from the North and entered right base to land on the 1500 metre runway. Islay is a very nice airport to fly into – located very close to the shore- and although the Island doesn’t have many features (apart from some shiny police cars that seemed to be joyriding on its deserted roads) it’s still a very good experience.

After having some coffee, paying the landing fees and losing Colin in the airport (we discovered him lurking in the Tower), we set off home again, back towards Jura and then turning to the East at Tarbert. A strong tailwind accompanied us all the way back to Dundee and we landed in the late afternoon fully satisfied with a wonderful day out. Anyone thinking of going for a flight to Islay - I can certainly recommend it!

You will hopefully have enjoyed watching aircraft take off or land in the bright warm summer sunshine whilst relaxing on the new decking area outside the clubhouse. I’m sure you’ll agree that it looks fantastic and its all down to the DIY skills of Jim Watt and John Brompton. Well done lads, your handy work is much appreciated by all ! John Stewart will be conducting a Ground school in the Dundee Clubhouse on the 1st Tuesday evening of the month ( if sufficient numbers apply ). He will cover a full range of topics, anything from PFL’s to grass landings and can also demonstrate these in the Sim. If you are interested please contact John and advise him of your requirements and attendance. TFC have Life Preservers for use by Flying Club Members. These are located in the clubhouse and signed In & Out at the Ops desk. The latest 1: 500 000 Chart for Scotland ( Edition 26 ) was released on 2nd July 2009. To stay Safe and Legal All aircraft flying VFR in UK Airspace should be carrying a current edition of the relevant area. The latest Edition 26 for Scotland can be bought from the Ops desk for a modest £15.99

RAF Leuchars will host their annual Airshow on Saturday 12th September, gates open at 8am. Entertaining us at this years show will be the sensational Aerobatics teams: the Red Arrows & the Blades. WWII Classics include the Spitfire, Hurricane & Lancaster. Vinatge Raf fighters the Vampire, Venom, Meteor & the latest RAF Fighter the Typhoon. Full list of aircraft can be found on http://www.airshow.co.uk/home Tayside Aviation will also be represented by having a Stand at the show & static display of a Warrior, Grob and the Arrow. Why not come along to the stand and show your friends / budding Pilots the inside of Our Aircraft and talk them through the controls !!!

Congratulations to Neil Houghton who has passed All 14 of his ATPL Exams ! We should take encouragement from Neils example, as he started and passed his PPL with Tayside Aviation only a few years back. Neil is now well on the road to a Commercial Licence and possibly PIC of an aircraft taking us on our Holidays !!! Well done Neil…. You may have noticed the barriers in the car park outside Tayside Aviation? These have been erected by the Highlands and Islands Airports to charge visitors for car parking. At present, the barriers are not operational, and car parking remains free.

Henry Allingham was an aircraft mechanic during World War I with the Royal Flying Corps and was based at Saint Omer in France.

Sadly, Henry died on Saturday 18 July, aged 113.

As a British veteran of World War I, he was made an honorary citizen of the town of St Omer for his participation.

If you are a student, then please speak to your instructor to see how parachute operations may affect your lesson and how disruption can be minimised.

It may be beneficial to get out the circuit and practice some PFLs then rejoin the circuit when the drop completes, giving you an understanding of overhead joins.

Important News Regarding Fife Airfield !

Tayside Aviation & Skydive St Andrews have an agreement to allow skydiving to take place at Fife airfield. Certain practices are imperative to ensure operational safety for everyone at the airfield, and should be adhered to at all times. The following pointers should be considered by all Pilots when flying into Fife or whilst on the ground.

The following terms shall be used to convey the Drop Zone status: -

Drop Zone COLD: The periods outside notified parachuting activities when parachuting shall not be taking place.

Drop Zone ACTIVE: Periods when parachuting activity has been notified and is likely to take place. This shall include the parachute aircraft’s climb and descent.

Drop Zone LIVE: The period between commencement of a Run-In for a Live drop and the point where all parachutists have landed and are clear of the active runway. This shall include the time parachutists spend in free-fall and under the canopy.

Placards shall be shown in appropriate places on the airfield to visually indicate to all pilots when the Drop Zone is either ACTIVE or COLD.

There shall continue to be a Fife Airport Air / Ground Radio Operator whose remit and privileges shall remain the same as now. All pilots shall remain responsible for their own lookout and separation from other traffic. No attempt shall be made by the Air/Ground radio operator or the Drop Zone Controller to provide any type of deconfliction service to pilots or to try to control the active airspace surrounding the airfield.

During Drop Zone Active periods after normal hours for Tayside Aviation’s operations the Drop Zone Controller shall give due radio warnings to incoming, established and departing airfield traffic of the Drop Zone being Cold, Active or Live.

During Drop Zone Live periods, the Aerodrome Traffic Zone that covers a 2 nm radius up to 2,000 feet shall be closed to all non-emergency arriving or departing traffic. However, emergency traffic shall take priority and, if possible, the drop shall be stopped by the Drop Zone Controller.

The currently established 1,000 ft AGL circuit pattern shall be adhered to by all pilots of fixed wing aircraft using the airfield; short cuts into the airfield shall be forbidden.

Important News Regarding Fife Airfield !

During a Drop Zone live period :

Fixed-wing and micro-light pilots shall not start their aircraft engines anywhere on the airfield. Permission to start-up shall be requested from the Airport Air/Ground Radio Operator by all fixed-wing and micro-light pilots beforehand

Aircraft taxiing under their own power shall stop at the safest and earliest opportunity and shut down.

No aircraft shall enter the active runway.

The pilot of any aircraft already on the active runway when a Drop Zone Live period starts should vacate the runway at the earliest opportunity and shut down the aircraft’s engines.

The Delta – Echo taxiway shall not be used for taxiing any aircraft.

There shall be two preferred target landing areas for parachutists on the Western grass area of the airfield:

One shall be on the South side of the runway between the wind-sock and the West-end hangars adjacent to the Delta-Echo taxiway; the other shall be on the North side of the runway to the western side of the heli-pad.
