Taylor Swift revealed to her fans Thursday that her mother, Andrea, has been diagnosed withcancer.

The pop star shared a post on Tumblr explaining that for Christmas this year, she'd asked hermother to get screened for any potential health issues.

"There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother offher case about it," Swift wrote. "The results came in, and I'm saddened to tell you that my mom hasbeen diagnosed with cancer. I'd like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private,but she wanted you to know."

Swift also said her mother wanted the singer to tell her fans the news, and to encourage their ownparents to get checked out.

"She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they've gotgoing on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer couldpossibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle... Or peace of mind in knowing that they'rehealthy and there's nothing to worry about," the 25-year-old said.

She ended the post by thanking fans "for caring about my family so much that she would want me toshare this information with you."

"I hope and pray that you never get news like this," she told them.
