Carbohydrates• Two types: simple and complex• Simple carb examples: fructose, lactose, glucose• Complex carb examples: bread, crackers, rice• Simple carbs are found in fruits• When you eat carbs the pancreas releases insulin• Insulin moves sugar from blood to cells• Insulin is then used as energy

Protein
Fats• Most foods have lot’s of fat• Some foods have none• Fat is an important part of your diet• Most people get about 30% of calories from their
fat• Two fat types• Trans fat: in margarine• Saturated fat: in meat and other animal products• Unsaturated fat: in plant foods and fish
Minerals• Body uses minerals for many functions• There are two kinds of minerals• Macro minerals: sodium, magnesium, potassium • Trace minerals: iron, zinc, copper• You need lot’s of macro minerals• And few trace minerals
Vitamins• two types of vitamins: fat soluble, water
soluble• fat-soluble vitamins, are stored in your body• Often stay for days or more• Fat soluble vitamins include: A, D, E, K• Water soluble vitamins go to your bloodstream• These vitamins include: C, and al the B vitamins
Fiber• Fibre helps digestive system + lowers cholesterol• Two different types of fibre: soluble, insoluble • Soluble fibre dissolves in water = lowers
cholesterol• Insoluble doesn’t dissolve in water = helps
digestive• You need both types to remain healthy• Fibre contains no calories• Fibre is in grain products, fruit/vegetables,
legumes, some nuts
Water• You can’t survive without water• Water is half your body weight• Your blood has lot’s of water• Water is a lymph (part of immune system)• To digest food you need water• Each cell in your body needs water• Almost all liquids foods contain water
