It was still pretty tight.” Matthews picked up $8,063 to finish $3,000 ahead of Scruggs with $49,297 won on the year. At IFR 49, Matthews and Bud won the opening round, topped the third round with the fastest time of the finals and placed third in the fourth round. A slip at the third barrel in the second round put them one hole out of the money in the second round. “He worked great,” said Matthews. “He tried his hardest. He felt good.” IFR 49 was a family affair for Matthews, who along with her mother Kim and older sister Jaylie, changed the IPRA record books with their triple qualification. “The plan was for all three of us to qualify together as a family,” said her mother Kim, who finished third in the IPRA World Stand- ings with $24,140. Taycie’s older sister, Jaylie, finished the season seventh in the standings with $17,470. “Anything else was icing on the cake. It’s the first time in the history of the IPRA that a mother and two daughters qualified in the same event and competed against each other. Last year, Taycie and I qualified, but Jaylie was going to more barrel races. This year, she decided she would try too.” Matthews said hauling with her mother and sister was a lot fun. “Our relationship with each other got stronger,” said the 16-year- old. “We had our ups and downs, but we’re still together. It was little competitive but pretty fun.” The familial relationship wasn’t limited to the people in the truck, but with the horses in the trailer too. While Bud was Matthews main money earner, his full sister FeelinTheFirewater (“Sis”) helped both Kim and Jaylie qualify. The mare is the main mount for Kim, but when Jaylie’s main horse, and most seasoned mount, was out with injury, Kim opted to ride youngsters so Jaylie could catch back up in the standings. “Jaylie’s good mare got hurt in April,” Kim explained. “She was sitting No. 2 in the standings when her mare got hurt. She rode several through the summer. After the end of August, I started letting her ride Sis because I was sitting third and I didn’t want to kill myself to see if I could catch Kindyl or Taycie and no one was Published Weekly, online at www.BarrelRacingReport.com - Since 2007 Heavenly Firewater Rider: Taycie Matthews; Owner: Mission Ranch; Breeder: Harry & Vivian Blackwell Trust JL Dash Ta Heaven Dash Ta Fame SI 113 Sudden Fame SI 98 First Down Dash SI 105 Dynas Plain Special Dyna Snow SI 80 Special Feelins SI 93 2012 Sorrel Stallion Fire Water Fanny Fire Water Flit SI 86 Slash J Harletta Flit Bar Jerris Suprise Miss Beggar Sue My Ole Dell IFR 49 Continued on Page 2 IPRA WORLD STANDINGS 1 Taycie Matthews $49,296.67 2 Kindyl Scruggs $46,292.26 3 Kim Matthews $24,139.83 4 Sadie Wolaver $19,898.66 5 Wendy Chestnut $18,878.45 6 Kara Kreder $18,430.59 7 Jaylie Matthews $17,469.86 8 Alicia Kilgus $15,575.64 9 Sindy Laliberte $15,373.30 10 Jessica Brown $15,065.63 11 Jodi Colton $14,834.21 12 Cindy Paquet $14,607.39 13 Liz Michael $14,582.15 14 Brandy Sams $13,364.01 15 Jessica Gauthier $13,348.59 www.BarrelRacingReport.com

IFR 49 Continued From Page 1really close behind me. I was pretty comfortable so I rode some younger horses—well, we all did during the summer at the some of the smaller rodeos, so we could get some seasoned and give the main horses a break.” Bud and Sis are stellar-bred 7-year-olds by leading sire and NFR qualifierJLDashTaHeavenoutof theNFRqualifierandbluehenproducer Fire Water Fanny, by Fire Water Flit. They were bred by Harry and Vivian Blackwell of Naylor, Missouri. Kim Matthews said she had no idea that the two would be come such superstars in such as short time, going from aged event champions to rodeo winners. She gives the credit to her non-horse husband, Terris, for buying them both. “When we went to go look at them, I told my husband – who doesn’t know anything about the horses, but just loves us enough to let us have at it – that I can’t decide. ‘What if I pick the wrong one?’ Terris said, ‘Let me just go talk to Harry.’ He said, ‘Well, I just bought them both,” laughed Kim.“They’ve both done well, so of course, they’re ‘his.’ He only owns the winners. I never would have thought he’d have bought two because he’s always, ‘We don’t need any more horses.’ I guess I need to let him start picking them all out!” Both Bud and Sis will go to the breeding farm after RFD-Tv’s The American. Bud will be collected and Sis will have embryos flushed. “He’ll be there for March and April, or as much of April as Tay-cieletshimwithoutthrowingafitandwantinghimhome.Weonlybreed him frozen unless he just happens to be there and someone

needs it,” noted Kim. Bud’sfirstthreefoalsarenow4andarelookinglikethey’llbesuccessful as well. One is currently on a 30-day recovery from a mi-nor injury; another, in training with Brandon Cullins, is being held over to 5 due to his large size, and the third one, out of a Shoot Yeah mare, is winning barrel races with Brian Wheeler. As for returning to the rodeo road, the newly crowned champion said she’s willing to give her prized mount a break. “I’m going to try to take it easy and give him a little break, but I am going to run him some,” she said. “I’ll probably end up running himmorethanIwant, butwe’rejustgoingtoflybytheseatof our

Whatever happens, happens.” She’s not totally ruling out another run at the IFR. ‘We probably won’t go as hard, but we might make some summer runs,” she said. “I’m going to try to run my other horses and get them seasoned too. I want to make the IFR again, but I don’t want to run my horse as much as I did this year. It was too much. He

deserves a break.” With her girls just two years from being eligible to earn their WPRA cards, Kim said she’s hopeful she can keep the winning herd together. “I’m not sure that Jaylie would want to,” she said, “but Taycie would be all about making it to the NFR.”

BARREL RACING REPORT January 22, 2019 14

By Amy Wilson With the desire to give back to the western industry and create an opportunity for young barrel racers to make lifelong memories, 4-time World Champion Barrel Racer, Sherry Cervi joined forces with Shane Parsons ten years ago to start youth barrel races on the west coast. With May events in Verndale, MN and Ceres, CA, it has continued to grow and after the past two years in Marana, Arizona, the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships took place January 18 – 20 at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson. “I remember being able to go to some youth races – I went to Martha Josey’s and have great memories from there – you get to meet kids from all over,” Cervi said. “I thought it would be cool to bring something like that out west, and give back a little bit for what the western industry has done for me – it’s been good to me and I’m appreciative of what I’ve been able to do.” In addition to adding $4,000, they gave Stingray saddles from MartinSaddlerytothewinnersof eachof thefivedivisionsinboththe junior and senior age groups, plus multiple prizes to the top 6 in each division from sponsors including: Classic Equine, Oxygen, Silver Lining, Back on Track, Justin, Resistol, and Biovigor. “Some of thosekidsthatwinasaddle, that’stheirfirstsaddle, andgettingto be a part of that kid’s life in that way is pretty special,” Cervi said. She’llalwaysrememberwinningherfirstsaddle.Shewas10yearsold and won the All Around at a Little Britches Rodeo in Wiscon-sin. “It was awesome. I didn’t think I’d ever see a poor day,” she said with a laugh. “I don’t still have that saddle, but that memory is with me forever.” The Sherry Cervi Youth Championships is also helping make another lasting impact. “We give scholarships away, which is very important to me,” she said. Last year they gave four scholarships totaling $10,000. “I’d like to get where we could give even more

scholarships,” she added. While Cervi wants to make the barrel race bigger and better every year, she wants to ensure that it’s always a good experience for the youth. This year there were 320 contestants from 17 states and Canada, with the furthest traveling from Pennsylvania. “Hopefully they have lasting memories and made new friends,” she said as she explained that the weekend started with some fun on Friday thanks to the many volunteers. “The atmosphere and the people from the

fairgrounds made us feel really welcome. Friday night they fed all the contestants and Drew Cooper came and sang. He’s awesome. The kids danced. It was a really great weekend.” Of course making an event of that magnitude possible, takes a team and Cervi is grateful for everyone who helped, including Jeye Johnson. “I would not be able to do it without her. The small de-tails are important and she’s been a great part of making the youth race awesome,” she said. Cervi’s husband, who is World Champion Heeler, Cory Petska was the tractor driver every drag for Thursday’s time-onlys, Friday’s jackpot, and the races Saturday and Sunday. “He was a trooper. He was very, very conscious of keeping the ground good,” Cervi explained. And Petska was so committed that he even had to adjust his rodeo schedule. “He had to a trade at Denver actually to be able to be there, so right now he’s driving in a snow storm,” Cervi said. A Bright Future After the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships which included two rounds, Cervi’s assessment of the future generation of barrel is “very bright”. “It’s tough, competitive. There’s good little riders and kids that their parents may not have come from a horse background or western background, and they’re being supportive and getting their kids involved,” she said. Furthermore, she thinks that involve-ment is especially important in today’s world. “I understand that not every kid is going to be a professional barrel racer and they may not ride as much when they get older, but I feel like being involved in horses and a rodeo atmosphere you learn responsibility, and it’s a good family atmosphere.”A Family Legacy Thirty little riders are getting an early start and competed in the peewee which is for ages 8 and under. The Junior (ages 12 and under) and the Senior (13 – 18 years old) competed in the 5D races consisting of two paid rounds with prizes being award to the aver-age champions.

The Junior 1D Average Champion is 10 year old Brooke Died-richs on SX Guns and Roses “Axle”. The 9 year old gelding by Bogies General is out of SX Frenchmans Peach, a futurity winner &bluehenproducerwhowasalsopartof thefirstfoalcropbyFrenchmans Guy. Brooke’s mom, Carisa Shearer, trained him and he was used as a ranch/rope horse. When Brooke’s barrel horse died in August 2017, she started riding Axle. “He is a little bit broncy but he loves Brooke. Really they just clicked from the time she started riding him,” Shearer explained. Since they live in South Dakota,Brooke’sfirsttimetohaulhimanywherewasApril2018.“IguessItrainedhimandBrookefinishedhim,”Shearersaidwitha laugh, pointing out that she quit going when her girls were little. Now, they have started traveling to events outside of South Dakota, and Shearer was very impressed with the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships. “It was the best youth barrel race I’ve ever been to. I can’t believe how personable she was – she took a picture with ev-ery kid. It was one of the neatest deals. She does a very, very good job.” Shearer’s oldest daughter Libby, 11, made sure they didn’t leave out Cory Petska. “So Libby loves Cory. We were saying stuff about the barrel race and she says, ‘Mom, did you see how good Cory did with the ground?’,” Shearer said with a laugh. ItwasasuccessfulweekendforbothgirlsasLibbyfinishedfourth in the Junior 1D Average. “I was proud of them because there was only 5 kids in the 1D average,” Shearer said. BrookenotonlywontheJunior1DAverage,butalsoherfirstsaddle. Shearer said she told Brooke, “It’s pretty special that it’s your firstsaddleandSherryCervigivesittoyou!”ShesaidthatBrookewas really excited, “She actually cried. And she said it was a dream come true.” Cervi also talked about the special moment and said, “Carisa is a great hand. They’re cowgirls.” Which is quite a compliment coming from a great cowgirl herself. Shearer went on to explain why she has

Brooke wear chinks to run barrels, “He weighs 1450 pounds and she weighs 58, so I make her wear those so she’s a little stickier.”Horse with the most heart Winning the Senior 1D was 15 year old Berlyn Franks from Queen Creek, Ariz. on a 19 year old grade mare named “Lizzie”. “It was an awesome race. Sherry does such a great job with all the prizes and putting it together,” Franks said gratefully. She admitted that she was unsure how they were going to do after they ran a 16.0 in Friday’s jackpot, “That was way off the pace.” But Saturday they ran a 15.354 to win the round! “On Sunday I just wanted to go out and make a clean run, and I ended up running the same exact time. So that was crazy,” Franks said. It was exact to the thousandths, 15.354. On top of all that, Lizzie was awarded the Horse with the Most Heart. Franks reacted to the honor, “Oh my gosh…it means so much for someone to see what I see in her.” Lizzie has a special story: she is out of a bucking horse and was an orphan. She wasn’t even started until she was 5 or 6 years old, and didn’t start running barrels until she was around 12 years old. Devin Cordova competed on Lizzie in college rodeo, making the CNFR three times. Lizzie alsoqualifiedforTheAmericanSemiFinals.Frankswastoldbyoneof Cordova’s friends that Lizzie was going to be for sale and that “she was the real deal”. Franks tried the mare, who was 16 at the time, at a barrel race and they won it. They went on to qualify for the Jr High Nationals last year, and hope to qualify for the NHSRA Finals this year. “On any size pattern, indoor or outdoor, she knows her spots,” Franks said complimenting the special mare who contin-uestogiveherconfidenceandawesomeexperiences.

Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

If you remember, two weeks ago we talked about putting on the whole armor of God. What do you think of when you hear the word ‘armor’?

Does the image, as my granddaughter told me one night at bedtime, “fluffywhiteunicornsonacloudpoopingrainbows”...jumpintoyour imagination? I hope not!! (I had a hard time visualizing that when she said it!) Weshouldthinkof fightingandwar.Well, whoarewefightingagainst that we need God’s armor on? The devil of course. Not other people. Not ANY other people like your spouse, family or friends. We should know that the Bible tells us we wrestle against evil. Please read about it again in Eph. 6:10-18. The devil will lie to you and me about who and what the problems are in our life. And it

certainly won’t be him. He’s an expert at putting the blame on God or the people around us. But we are smarter than that because we are getting to know God better every week! But listen. We get to choose. So this week, let’s suit up, like the army of God we are, and quit sitting it out!! Let’s saveourfightingforthedevil, andnotthosearoundus!

Mike and Sherry Morrison pastor “Church at the Barn” in Gillette, WY. They also travel to other areas ministering at barrel races, ranches, rodeos, churches
