4 Things That Will Make You Successful

Dear Passengers,

One of the most frequently asked questions TAXI members ask us is, “How long after you send them my music will it take for them to contact

me?”

The answer is: Anywhere from a day or two… weeks, months, maybe even years. Yes, I said “Years!”

I know it’s painful to even imagine waiting for years, but it happens all the time. Why would a company ask for music, and take years to contact

the person who created it? Sometimes it’s simply procrastination (c’mon, we’re all guilty of that!).

Sometimes the person or company that requested it gets overloaded, and the music file sits on a computer desktop until the decks clear off a bit.

I’ve got documents and ideas of all sorts sitting on my computer’s desktop from two years ago. They’re too important to make them invisible by

filing them, so they sit on my desktop as daily reminders. Eventually I’ll act on them!

Maybe the most logical reason you don’t get a quick response is that the music supervisor or publisher found something else, and you’ll never

hear from them. But maybe they liked your music enough that they saved it in a rainy day file or on their desktop for a future project.

You’ll Feel Better When You Read These…

I remembered seeing some posts on our Forum about how long it sometimes takes to hear back. I found these three examples on just the first

page of our Success Stories area!

3 Forwards 2 Years Ago Return Library Deal

1 year and 2 month: 3 deals

Library wants songs 2 years after a forward

And here’s a similar story from member Nathan Nasby about a relationship started at our free convention two or three years ago:

Two placements from a publisher I met at the Rally

Here’s What You Need to Do…

I can’t remember who first coined this “mantra,” but I know that TAXI member Steven Guiles made bumper stickers and gave them out at the

Road Rally a few years ago. These are the 4 things that will make you successful!

“WRITE, SUBMIT, FORGET, REPEAT”

In other words, don’t wait by the phone or check your email every ten minutes when your music is forwarded by TAXI. Don’t torture yourself!

Be patient… actually, forget that a music supervisor, publisher, or record company has your music in their hands and move forward. Keep

writing. Build momentum. Keep filling the pipeline.

The more music you make, the more music you’ll get out in the world and the greater your chances will be! You’ll also improve your skills and

get faster at writing and producing with each new effort.

TAXI’s most successful members would all tell you that it’s all about quality and quantity – much more than it’s about one single song or

instrumental cue making a fortune.

Talk to you soon,

Michael

P.S. We just heard from a Music Supervisor that she is using EIGHT pieces of music from TAXI members in just one Independent Film. If you

obsessively look at music credits like I do, then you know that it’s extremely rare that any one publisher, music library, or record label gets more

than a couple of placements in any single film.

Our members just nailed EIGHT placements, and the Music Supervisor on this film is very selective! Go TAXI members!!!!!

CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY SONGS with Male Vocals are needed by a hard-working, Nashville-based Music Publisher for a Multipule Award-Winning

Country Artist that‟s working on a brand new album. They‟re looking for radio-worthy, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs (incredibly strong ballads will be considered) that could be found on the same playlist as acts like:

Blake Shelton: https://www.youtube.com/user/blakeshelton

Dierks Bentley: https://www.youtube.com/user/DierksBentleyVEVO

Josh Turner: https://www.youtube.com/user/JoshTurnerVEVO

Lee Brice: https://www.youtube.com/user/LeeBriceMusic

Quoting the source: “This artist is known for his incredible low notes, rich baritone vocals and wholesome good looks. He's looking for hit tunes for his next

project that instantly engage listeners and connect on a deep level. Songs for this listing need to be distinctively unique, visual, conversational, current sounding, radio-competitive, energetic, and have fresh melodies with that something extra that make listeners want to hum along. It's been a while since he's had a top 10 hit,

and that's what this listing is focused on. He's known for his love songs. The artist is co-writing songs with some of Nashville's best for his next project, so you'll

want to focus on top drawer, contemporary country tunes with a solid groove that are radio-friendly. Melodies need to be current, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone, super compelling hit choruses that come in by 1:00 minute into the tune. Limit verses to 2 or 3 max, and this publisher prefers tight structures like

ABABCB or AABABCB that feature clear sectional contrast. It's recommended that you listen to recent hits by the artists mentioned to get a general vibe of tunes

that could work for this artist. Lyrics need to be conversational, VERY VISUAL, unique, confident, uplifting and present fresh lyrical perspectives that folks can relate to. This artist has a wholesome image, so you'll want to avoid bro-country themes, references to cheating and drinking, as well as dark or depressing stories

since they won't work for him. Lyrics that are packed with compelling details and imagery, rather than familiar clichés and overly repetitious lines will work best here.” Incredible info, right? Give them Hit songs that are immediately amazing, with fresh, competitive melodies, great hooks, and above all, a unique storyline

4

sent his way, so it truly needs to be an A Game presentation from top to bottom.” Give him well-structured Hits with modern melodies, and a visual, direct, and

Country Listings (continued):

NEW LISTING - SOULFUL, EXPRESSIVE, CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY HITS with Female Vocals are needed by a well-respected and hard-working Nashville Music Publisher that‟s pitching to an iconic Female Country SUPERSTAR. Please submit well-crafted, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that could be found

sharing a playlist with artists like (but not limited to):

Miranda Lambert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ksWKOy665o

Jennifer Nettles: https://www.youtube.com/user/JenniferNettlesVEVO

Trisha Yearwood: https://www.youtube.com/user/TrishaYearwoodVEVO

Maren Morris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouWQ25O-Mcg

Quoting the Publisher: “We need compelling, R&B-influenced, modern Country Hits for a well-known, Multi-Grammy Award winning Country artist who has one of Country music's most recognizable voices. Like most country artists, she co-writes with some of Nashville's finest, so pitch your top drawer, memorable

hits. Send authentic Modern Country tunes that are current with what's playing on Country radio. Please avoid songs that lean too Pop, and avoid stock-sounding

melodies. Miranda Lambert's visual hit, „Automatic,‟ which tugs the heartstrings and features a contemporary chorus is a great example of what‟s needed. Melodies need to be current, unique, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone choruses that lend themselves to powerful vocal harmonies. Please limit verses to

2 or 3 max, and ABABCB structures are definitely preferable. It's recommended that you listen to recent hits by the artists mentioned to get a general vibe of

tunes that could work for the listing. Lyrics need to be conversational, VISUAL, emotional, positive, and present fresh themes that engage listeners on the heart level. Universal story lyrics are especially welcome, and the artist is past her 30's, so you'll want to pitch songs that she can authentically convey to her fans. (For

example, songs about falling in love for the first time, getting married for the first time, etc. won't work here.) You'll want to avoid using clichés and familiar

sounding phrases, and opt for unique, conversational lyrics that are packed to the brim with visuals. Overly repetitious, abstract, generalized, predictable lines

won't fly for this, and you‟d be smart to avoid submitting songs with drinking, cheating, depressing/negative themes. Pitch memorable songs that give listeners an

uplifting experience.” Great info, right? Acoustic demos can work for this pitch, but your recording quality (even for stripped-down demos) needs to be clean,

clear, and good enough to represent your song well. Fully produced demos are also welcomed, as always. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Publisher and must be received no later than 11:59PM

Robert Ellis:

Lindi Ortega:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG_2rZ4UzN0

Please submit roots-driven Songs that reflect the passionate, reflective, and rural style of the referenced artists above, with a well-crafted song structure, great

melodies, engaging lyrics, and a really compelling chorus. They‟re not looking for classic or modern Country for this pitch, so please be sure your submissions have a distinct “Indie” quality that all the references share. Universal lyrics are needed, so please avoid references to specific names, places, dates, times, and

brands. Do not copy or rip off the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for the texture, tone, and vibe.

Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). They offer a NON-EXCLUSIVE 50/50 deal. Writers will also get a percentage of applicable sync fees, which will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis. You must own or control your master and copyright to submit to this pitch. Please submit

playlists with artists like (but not limited to) A.A. Bondy, Marissa Nadler, J. Tillman, Sharon Van Etten, etc., etc., etc. Please take a listen to the references the

Songs should be able to support and play under very emotional scenes and montage

sequences.”

Give them well-crafted songs with emotionally engaging melodies, thought provoking lyrics, and a vocal performance that‟s delivered in a intimate, sincere, and

captivating way. Instrumentation can be solely acoustic, or have a fuller band sound, but should be somewhat consistent with the references above.

Introspective lyric themes about lost love will work really well for this pitch, but don‟t limit yourself to just that idea!. Universal lyrics will work best, so please

avoid references to specific names, dates, times, brands, and places. Please do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

music.” They‟re looking for music that is either from real artists, or sounds so convincing that you can‟t tell that it‟s not from a working artist or band. This

company routinely pitches for high-end placements, so they don‟t want music that sounds library-ish! They‟re looking for solid Songs in All-Tempos that could be found on playlists with artists like (but not limited to):

Gospel Listings

CONTEMPORARY GOSPEL SONGS with Male Vocals and some “Country Flair” are needed by a busy and well-respected Nashville Music Publisher for a legendary, Grammy-Winning Gospel artist working on his next record. Give them heartfelt, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs (amazing Power Ballads will be considered)

that would appeal to the fans of artists like:

Josh Turner: https://www.youtube.com/user/JoshTurnerVEVO

Jason Crabb: https://www.youtube.com/user/JasonCrabbMusic

George Strait: https://www.youtube.com/user/GeorgeStraitVEVO

Steven Curtis Chapman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrWMBC6yoME&list=PL0B6BED66F36756CD

Quoting the source: “We need Contemporary Country-Gospel (not old-timey Southern gospel). The artist is co-writing songs with some of Nashville's best for his next project, so you'll want to focus on top drawer, contemporary Country-Gospel tunes with single potential for radio formats from progressive Southern Gospel

to neo-traditional Country. Old-timey, Traditional Southern Gospel tunes will NOT work for this artist. Melodies need to be current, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone, super compelling hit choruses. Limit verses to 2 or 3 max, and this publisher prefers ABABCB song forms. It's recommended that you listen to recent

8

hits by the artists referenced to get a general vibe of tunes that could work for this artist. Capture listeners with an undeniable, unique title/hook that will help your

song stand out above the clutter. It's hard to underestimate the importance of having a totally original, catchy title/hook and fresh lyrical concept that tugs the heartstrings for this listing. (The honest truth is that if the title doesn't pique this artist's interest, then he probably won't find the time to listen to the song given his

incredibly busy schedule). Lyrics need to be conversational and present fresh lyrical perspectives. Relatable story songs set in the present day are welcome. Keep

in mind that uplifting themes of grace, hope and redemption will work best here. Please avoid using Christian clichés and scriptural sounding phrases, and opt for unique, conversational lines that are packed to the brim with visuals, original detail, and that include a compelling story line that tugs the heartstrings.” Great info,

right? Your demo quality needs to be competitive with songs being pitched on Music Row. The specific deal points will be negotiated on a song-by-song basis

directly with the Publisher. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI

screener handpicked by the Publisher - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PST), on Thursday, May 5th, 2016.

NEW LISTING - INDIE-Style INSTRUMENTALS are needed quickly for a $1,000, Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Company Placement by the Creative Marketing

Director of a cutting-edge, food-related product. They‟re looking for fresh and contemporary Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that could be found on the same

playlist with the band Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Take a careful listen to the reference they gave us to get in the general ballpark of what they need:

“Can‟t Keep Checking My Phone” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpD_74Vc3mA

Even though the reference has vocals, they are looking for Instrumentals only for this pitch!

Quoting the Marketing Director: “The mood we‟re trying to create with this video is anticipation and excitement. We really like the vibe of „Can‟t Keep Checking My Phone‟ by Unknown Mortal Orchestra for the interesting, energetic, yet chill vibe. But, we‟re also open to other ideas that are more energetic, and less chill.

It‟ll be the musical backdrop in a 45-60 second teaser video for a game-changing product from a cutting-edge food-tech company. The product is amazing, and we

believe it will cause quite a buzz.”

texture to help you nail this unique request.

a general guide for feel, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).
