Mathe’s friend, Njabulo Mcwabe, was also killed during the shooting. Communications officer of Tongaat SAPS, W/O Manisha Maharaj-Marie said police of- ficers received a complaint of shooting at about 6:30pm. “Upon arrival at the scene, Mathe was found lying along the road outside Teddy’s Super- market with multiple gunshot wounds to his body while Mcwabe, who sustained gunshot wounds to the left back and left chest, was found along the doorway of Teddy’s Super- market,” she said. It is alleged that Mathe left the shop to go out- side to Mncwabe who was in his vehicle when gunshots were fired. Paramedics pronounced Mncwabe dead at the scene while Mathe suc- cumbed to his injuries at Victoria Hospital shortly after arriving. W/O Maharaj-Marie said that investigations are continuing. While there are speculations that the incident is related to taxi violence, Isiqalokuhle Taxi Association’s public relations officer, Qaphela Thusi said they do not suspect that the shoot- ing was related to a taxi feud. Thusi revealed that this was not the first time that Mathe was targeted. He said that last year, he miraculously escaped after being attacked by unknown men in his home. “We are still shaken because Sakhile was not a person who had enemies. We will definitely miss his sense of humour and his humility. He was a man who always advocated for peace within the association,” said Thusi. The incident comes after the fatal shooting of Dolphin Coast Taxi Association chairman, Zitty Stephen, which left North Coast resi- dents in shock, a week ago. Concerned by the alarming rate of taxi killings, the Inkatha Freedom Party has called for a thorough investigation to end the scourge of illegal guns which are alleged to be used in the killings whenever there are incidents of taxi violence. “We urge the KZN MEC of Transport, Hon Mxolisi Kaunda to establish a task team with the prime focus on curbing taxi violence. The MEC must also institute action to eradicate il- legal firearms allegedly used by syndicates in the killings of mainly taxi owners and chair- persons of taxi associations. With the high prevalence of taxi violence, drastic action is needed as a matter of urgency,” said IFP KZN’s provincial spokesman of transport, Mr Steven Moodley. The gruesome image of bodies burntbeyond recognition will always lingeron the minds of Jiyane residents inHambanathi.Couple, Rebecca Mkabela and Zefa-nia Sibiya, were tragically killed aftertheir two bedroom shack was guttedby the fire on Sunday evening.Tongaat SAPS communications offi-cer, W/O Manisha Maharaj-Mariesaid that police received a complaintof a shack on fire on Jiyane Road inHambanathi and immediately pro-ceeded to the area.Upon arrival at the scene, the shackwas already engulfed in huge flames. eThekwini firefighters worked tire-lessly to douse the blaze, however, when the fire was extinguished, theremains of two human bodies werefound. The pair were found lying alongsideeach other and were burnt beyondrecognition. The Search and Rescue members re-moved the bodies from scene and

thereafter made their way to thePhoenix Mortuary. W/O Maharaj-Marie said that an in-quest has been opened and that no foulplay is suspected at the moment.Resident, Nozipho Sweli said that sheheard people shouting ‘Kuyasha, kuyasha!” (It’s burning, it’s burning)and when they rushed towards theshack, they found the couple’s homein flames. She added that other residents tried toput out the fire but the flames were toostrong. According to another member of thecommunity, who preferred his namenot to be disclosed, the couple hadbeen drunk and suspected to havepassed out at the time of the fire. Hesuspected that a candle led to theirtragic death.Community Policing Forum member,Anthony Gumede said the communityis still reeling from shock after the or-deal.Gumede said this was not the first

time that a shack was gutted by fire inthe area, however, this is the first in-cident where people were burnt todeath. The CPF member said that to eradi-cate shack fires, there is a great needfor public awareness campaigns to re-duce fires in vulnerable communitiesand for dwellers to be educated onwhat to do if a fire incident arises.

Taps have been running dry in TrenancePark (new phase) and Redcliffe for thepast three months, leaving residents frus-trated over the scarcity.According to a Trenance Park, CeltisRoad resident, Charlene Sukraj, who hasaddressed the issue on numerous occa-sions with eThekwini water officials, they have to bear with the water crisis ona daily basis. “As a resident of the area for the past 25years, I have never felt more saturatedthan right now. My family and I have tobear the brunt of poor planning. We have

to endure not having water for some-times 24 hours at a time with no watertankers to sustain us,” she said.Sukraj said contacting the call centre isof absolute no help at all because whena tanker is requested, it never comes totheir road.“What boggles my mind is that peoplewho are living closer to the reservoir aremost affected as opposed to the peoplewho are living same reservoir that isservicing the entire of Trenance Park.Being a working mother with kids is be-coming rather frustrating as you have to

constantly be making a plan for water,”said Sukraj. She said all avenues have been ex-hausted as this has been ongoing now forthe past three and a half months. Redcliffe resident, Matthew Mudaly saidthat since December, their water supplylasts for only for three hours per day. Tomake the matter worse, for the past twoweeks, the area had no water at all, forc-ing residents to travel to distant informalsettlements to get water from the stand-pipes.He said when they went to the OttawaWater Department to probe the matter, they were told that pumps and tanks, supplying water to the area, are too smallto accommodate water for every house-hold and that Reservoir 3, which sup-plies water to the area, is not filling.“The question is what they are doingabout this. Surely there must be a solu-tion. How are they expecting us to livewithout a basic need? It is ridiculous,”said Mudaly. The resident added that the water short-age problem began when the new low-cost housing came up opposite TrenancePark.“We have to travel two kilometes to getwater. Our school-going children have tomiss school if we do not get water forthe day. We are calling for the eThek-wini Water Department to urgently ad-dress this,” added Mudaly. An email was sent to eThekwini Munic-ipality’s communications department;however, there was no response receivedat the time of going to print.

CORNUBIA AND

One can never fully ‘bully-proof’ a child andcases of bullying are prevalent in many schoolswhere a group of pupils take advantage of or iso-lating one pupil and gaining the loyalty of by-standers who want to avoid becoming the nextvictim. Many victims opt to remain silent about their en-counters, fearing that their tormentors might comeafter them.Bullying can be physical, sexual, verbal or emo-tional in nature and occur either inside or outsideof school. In light of Child Protection Week which is com-memorated from May 27 to June 2, communica-tions officer of Tongaat SAPS, ManishaMaharaj–Marie has shared the following tips tohelp empower your child against bullying.• Model compassionate, respectful relationshipsfrom toddler stage. The most effective way of pro-tecting children from being bullied and from be-coming bullies, is to make sure they grow up inloving relationships, rather than relationships inwhich power or force are used to control them.• Be your child's ‘go-to’ person (confidante).Make sure your children always feel safe and freeto tell you about incidents with the other parentor sibling(s) at school, at sporting events or even

at home.• Stay connected to your child through thick andthin. Lonely children are more likely to be bul-lied. Keep lines of communication open, no mat-ter what.• Supervise electronic communication, such as theinternet, social networking and text messages.Understand cyberbullying where children mayfeel helpless against what is being said or shownin pictures about them online.• Help your child think of ways to react to possi-ble bullying incidents, such as them being teasedabout wearing glasses, perhaps there is aphrase/words they can utter to make the other per-son think twice about making comments like thatin future.• Coach your child to handle teasing. Bully at-tacks start with verbal harassment. The manner inwhich the victim responds to the first verbal ag-gression, determines whether the bully continuesto target the particular child.• Teach your child respectful self-assertion. Chil-dren need to know they can get their needs metby being respectful. Build inner confidence.Teach your child how to stand up for him/herself.• Teach your child basic social skills. Bullies preyon children whom they perceive to be vulnerable.

Role-play with your child on how to join a gameat the playground or introduce him/herself to an-other child at a party.• Advise your child not to respond to possible bul-lying by fighting or bullying back. It can quicklyescalate into violence and trouble. Practice ‘cooldown’ strategies, such as counting to 10, writingdown words of anger, taking deep breaths orwalking away.W/O Manisha Maharaj-Marie advises that if yourchild has already been exposed to bullying, do nothesitate to intervene.“Speak up for your child. Your job as the parentis to protect your child. That means that in addi-tion to teaching your child to stick up for him/her-self, you may need to call or visit the teacher or

principal. Take it serious, if you discover that thebullying is getting worse when the bully finds outthat your child told you or if threats of physicalharm are involved. Sometimes, it helps to ap-proach the bully's parents,” she said.W/O Maharaj-Marie added that parents must notattempt to bring the victim and the bully togetheradding that in most cases, teachers or counsellorsare the best people to contact first. “If you have tried those methods and still want tospeak to the bullying child's parents, it's best todo so in an environment where a professional per-son, such as a counsellor, school official or socialworker can mediate,” concluded W/O Maharaj-Marie.
