TAX & BENEFITS

To tax is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon a taxpayer by a state or functional equiva-lent of a state such that failure to pay is punishable by law. Taxes consist of direct tax or indi-rect tax, and may be paid in money or as its labor equivalent. A tax may be defined as a “pecuniary bur-den laid upon indi-viduals or property owners to support

the government, a payment exacted by legislative author-ity”. A tax “is not a voluntary payment or donation, but en-forced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority” and is “any contribu-tion imposed by gov-ernment, whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, exercise, subsidy, aid, sup-ply, or other name.

The sole responsibility for all the problems of the benefit system lies within the hands of the gov-ernment. You cant just blame the people who are claiming for benefits, as they only claim because the ease of access to literally free money. The country is also being made a mockery of due to the system as it has led to immigrants, migrating to our country for them to then be kept on the money from the tax payers. We can barely cope alone without hav-

ing the interests of the rest of the world. For years it has become progressively worse so its about time the government make a change, and finally they are begining to do so. The ‘Benefit Cap’ will start from April 2013 and will put a limit on the total amount of benefit. The idea of this will hopefully lead to the people in most need of the services being provided aid whilst the ones whom are not in real need and are committing benefit fraud will not recieve anything.

are an advantage of

profit gained from something, in this case

doing nothing. Income Support is a type of ben-efit, which is provided in the United Kingdom for people who are on a low income. Claimants of In-come Support may be entitled to certain other benefits, for example, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and help with health costs. A person with savings over £16000 cannot get income sup-port, and savings over £6000 affect how much Income Support can be re-ceived. Claimants must be between 16-59, inclusive, work fewer than 16 hours a week, and have a reason why they are not ac-tively seeking work (on grounds of illness, dis-a b i l i t y , caring for

chil-d r e n ,

or some-one who is ill).

Claimants can re-ceive income support

if they are a lone parent and responsible for a child under five who is a mem-ber of their household. If the claimant is at school or in higher education, the claimant may be able to get Income Support if they are: looking after their own child, an or-phan and nobody is look-ing after them, they have a severe disability which will affect their chances of getting a job, no liv-ing with parents or be-ing in contact with them.Although this does not seem a lot, this is only one thing they are claiming for, it doesn’t stop there it is more like a ongoing c o n t i n -u e m .

A u n e m -

ployed person is someone who

is between the ages of 16 and 65, without a paid

job but is able to work. The unemployment rate is contin-

uing to rise but here I have fo-cused more on the statistics based

around the Romford area. As you can see over a 6 year period the

unemployment rate has more than doubled and this sets the scene for the rest of the country as many other places have witnesssed the same oc-curance but in some places it has more then doubled. This shock-ing display just questions how

the world is to contiue with the lack of jobs, how will we cope?

The truth is out of the 1853 people that are unem-

ployed in Romford at least 75% of them

do genuinely w a n t

a job but I dare to say that the remaining 25% would happily sit back and do nothing whilst claiming benefits from the gorvernment. I think that eve-rybody understands how hard it is to find a job and many people are stuck in jobs they hate or it is just not what they would prefer to do as they can not risk loosing their current job for a job they wont get.But I don’t like how people sit back and don’t even make a effort to even try to get a job they just rely on the tax payers to work for them. I per-sonally do not understand why people would chose an easy op-tion of claiming benefits for the rest of their life rather then trying to persue their dream job, giv-ing the best chance for their chil-d r e n .

HOUSING THE DEVIL

O n e of the main

bad points of taxes is how people

avoid taxes, this makes it unfair for the rest of the

population who have to suf-fer with paying taxes. Also,

some people who claim benefits for things such as disabilities have been caught out recently for fabricating their situation for claiming for a disability they don’t have. Furthermore, why should people be able to claim money for being a single parent that’s

unable to work due to them having a child? It was their

decision to have a child, why should every-

one else have to pay for it?

I t s g i v i n g young people an easy way out. In-stead of actually trying to achieve by working hard and earning money, they can now just get pregnant and be awarded a house and benefits. I feel that by doing this they are taking away the money and ac-comodation which could help someone who is in serious need like a disabled person. I think that you cannot just blame the people who are claiming as it is the gover-ments fault for making it so accessible to literally anyone. They should do regular c h e c k s .
