    Research Grants -

    Doctoral Programmes in Germany ' DAAD

    DAAD research grants provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry outresearch and continue their education in Germany. There are funding programmes for variousqualification phases and stages in a career. The grants also promote the exchange of experience andnetworking amongst colleagues.

    The aim of this grant programme is to support doctoral projects in Germany.

    Who can apply?Excellently-qualified young academics and scientists who have completed a Master's degree or Diplom,or in exceptional cases a Bachelor's degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant-supportedresearch.

    What can be funded?Doctoral programmes at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-universityresearch institute in Germany:

    o individual projects under the supervision of a university teacher or academic adviseror

    o participation in a structured doctoral study programme

    Note:Doctoraltheses in the areas of human medicine (Dr. med.), veterinary medicine (Dr. med. vet.) ordentistry (Dr. med. dent.) cannot be supported.

    Duration of the funding

    o Usually a maximum of three years, in exceptional cases up to four years; the length of the grant isdecided by a selection committee and depends on the project in question and the applicant's workschedule.

    o Grants are initially awarded for a maximum of one year. Extensions depend on whether the selectioncommittee considers the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

    o For doctoral projects in Germany that require several years of research, research phases outsideGermany can be supported if these are critical for the successful completion of the doctoral degree.Planned stays must be specified in the application in the work and time schedule and should notexceed a quarter of the anticipated totalfunding period.

    Under certain circumstances, grant holders completing an uninterrupted stay of over 6 months mayreceive the following additional benefits:

    . monthly rent subsidy

    o monthly allowance for accompanying family members

    To enable grant holders to improve their language skills in preparation for their stay in Germany, DAADoffers the following services:

    o Payment of course fees for the online language course "Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)' fvww.deutsch-uni.com [http/iwww.deutsch-uni.com]) for six months after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter

    o if necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the research stay; the DAADdecides whether to fund the grant holder's participation and for how long depending on language skillsand project. lf a language course scholarship is granted and the working language at the host instituteis German, participation is compulsory.

    . Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the grant period

    o Reimbursement of the fees for the TestDaF test which has either been taken in the home country afterreceipt of the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the end of the funding period

    SelectionAn independent selection committee consisting of specialist scientists reviews applications.The most important selection criteria:

    o a convincing and well-planned research project or course of continuing educationo academicachievements

    Additionaldocuments that prove academic suitability or provide information about extracurricular activitieswill also be considered in the assessment.

    What requirements must be met?Applications for research grants may be submitted by excellently qualified young lecturers from state andprivate universities respectively lKlPs as well as academics and scientists from state research institutionswho have passed their second (graduate) degree (Master's) with a grade of 3.0 or better and who can

  • prove that they have gained at least two years of career experience. ln exceptional cases, younguniversity graduates from the private sector may also apply

    o As a rule, applicants should not have graduated any longer than six years before the time ofapplication. !f you are already working on a doctoral degree, you should not have started your degreeany Ionger than three years previously.

    . Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the time of applicationcannot be considered.

    Language skills

    . Applicants are generally expected that they have a good knowledge of German or a good knowledgeof English (TOEFL iBT 80 resp. IELTS 6.0).

    o The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD portal. You are also required to send 3copy/copies of the "Application summary. (PDF file), which is generated in the DAAD portal after theonline application procedure has been completed, and other appendices by post to the applicationaddress.

    o Please note that the "submitting an application" tab in the scholarship database only appears whilethe current application period is running. After the application deadline has expired, the portal for thisprogramme is not available untilthe next application period.

    To apply, please select the call for applications for this programme in the scholarship database(www.funding-guide.de). From here, you can enter the portal by clicking the tab "Submitting anapplication".

    Application documentsCertificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form anduploaded to the DAAD portal. DAAD's Head Office in Bonn will only request certified copies of thesubmitted documents in paper form if a grant is awarded!

    o Full curriculum vitae in tabular form (max. 3 pages)o List of publications (max. 10 pages), if applicableo Extensive and detailed description of the research proposa! and a description of previous research

    Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees . DAAD

    DAAD research grants provide foreign doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists with anopportunity to carry out research and continue their education in Germany. There are fundingprogrammes for various qualification phases and stages in a career. The grants also promote theexchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues.

    The aim of this programme is to promote doctoral degrees at the home university with integrated researchphases in Germany. The doctora! degrees are supervised both by a university teacher at the homeuniversity and an academic adviser at the host institute in Germany ("sandwich mode!"). Based on thisflexible, multi-phase funding system, doctoral candidates start their doctoraldegree in their home countrybut subsequently spend research periods in Germany. The doctorate is completed in the home countryunder the supervision of the German academic adviser.

    Who can apply?Excellently-qualified doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists who have completed aMaster's degree or Diplom, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor's degree at the latest by the time theybegin their grant-supported research.

    What can be funded?Research phases at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education or a non-universityresearch institute in Germany as part of a doctoral programme in the home country: the proposal must becoordinated with the academic advisers at the home university and in Germany.

    Duration of the funding

    o A total of no more than two years;the length of the grant is decided by a selection committee anddepends on the project in question and the applicant's work schedule.

    o Grants are initially awarded for up to 12 months. Extensions depend on whether the selectioncommittee considers the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

    . Applicants should outline how they plan to divide their time between Germany and the home universityand specify plans to visit a third country for the purpose of collecting material in a work and timeschedule in their application.

    o During stays at their home university, the grant is interrupted.

    Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the Field of the Performing Arts .DAAD

    DAAD scholarships offer graduates the opportunity to continue their education in Germany with apostgraduate or continuing course of study. The scholarships also promote the exchange of experienceand networking amongst colleagues.

    Who can apply?Foreign applicants who have gained a first university degree in the field of the Performing Arts at thelatest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study programme.

    What can be funded?ln the programme "Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the Field of the Performing Arts (Drama,Direction, Musicals, Performance Studies, Dance, Choreography), you can complete

    . a postgraduate degree leading to a finalqualification, or

    o further training that does not lead to a final qualification (advanced study programme) (not anundergraduate course) at a state or state-recognised German university of your choice.

    This programme only funds projects in the artistic field. Other DAAD scholarship programmes areavailable for applicants from the fields of Theatre and Dance Studies or for artists with a scientific project.

    Duration of the fundingPostgraduate study programmes leading to a finalqualification:

    o Between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study programme

    o Start: usually on 1st October, or earlier if a language course is taken prior to the study programme

    o All scholarships are initially awarded for one academic year and are extended only if students haveperformed well in accordance with the programme length on request and after renewed appraisal

    . Applicants who are already in Germany in the first year of a postgraduate course at the time ofapplication may apply for funding for their second year of study. ln this case, it is not possible toextend the scholarship. These applicants have the opportunity to introduce themselves personally tothe committee during the selection procedure. Details about this personal interview are announcedafter the application has been received.

    Further training that does not tead to a tinat qualification (advanced study programme)o Usually one academic year

    Who can apply?Foreign applicants who have gained a first university degree in the fields of Fine Art, DesignA/isualCommunication and Film at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported studyprogramme.

    What can be funded?ln this study programme, you can complete

    o a Master's degree/postgraduate degree leading to a final qualification, or

    . a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification at a state or state-recognisedGerman university of your choice (not an undergraduate course).

    This programme only funds projects in the artistic field. Other DAAD scholarship programmes areavailable for applicants from the field of History of Art or Art Studies or for artists with a scientific project.

    Duration of the fundingMaster's degree:

    o Between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study programme

    o All scholarships are initially awarded for one academic year and are extended only if students haveperformed well in accordance with the programme length on request and after renewed appraisal.

    Study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the Field of Architecture . DAAD

    DAAD scholarships offer graduates the opportunity to continue their education in Germany with apostgraduate or continuing course of study. The scholarships also promote the exchange of experienceand networking amongst colleagues.

    Who can apply?Foreign applicants from the areas of Architecture, lnterior Design, Monument Conservation, UrbanPlanning/Urban Development, Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning, whohave gained a first university degree at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supportedstudy programme.

    What can be funded?

    tn the programme "study Scholarships for Foreign Graduates in the Field of Architecture", you cancompletea postgraduate degree leading to a final qualification, ora complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification(not an undergraduate course) at a state or state-recognised German university or in one of theappropriate study programmes at a university of applied sciences of your choice.

    This programme only funds projects in the area of Design/Planning. Other DAAD scholarshipprogrammes are available for applicants from the field of History of Architecture or applicants with ascientific project.

    Duration of the fundingPostgraduate study programmes leading to a final qualification

    o Between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study programme or project

    o Start: usually on 1st October, or earlier if a language course is taken prior to the study programme

    o All scholarships are initially awarded for one academic year and are extended only if students haveperformed well in accordance with the programme length on request and after renewed appraisal.

    . Applicants who are already in Germany in the first year of a postgraduate course at the time ofapplication may apply for funding for their second year of study. ln this case, it is not possible toextend the scholarship.

    Complementary studies not Ieading to a finalqualification. Usually one academic year

    o A monthly payment of 750 euros

    o Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source offunding

    Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

    o Contribution towards tuition fee (max. 500 euros per semester)o Monthly rent subsidy

    To enable scholarship holders to learn German in preparation for their stay in the country, DAAD offersthe following services:

    o Payment of course fees for the online language course "Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)" ftvww.deutsch-uni.com [http:/lwww.deutsch-uni.com]) for six months after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter

    o if necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit; the DAAD decideswhether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project.Participation in a language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language isGerman at the German host institution.

    o Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period

    o Reimbursement of the fees for the TestDaF test which has either been taken in the home country afterreceipt of the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the end of the funding period.

    SelectionA special DAAD committee made up of professors from German universities makes the final decisionabout scholarships in the field of architecture. The decision is based upon written applications and worksamples which have to be submitted.

    Further informationConfirmation of a scholarship does not automatically guarantee admission to one of the host universities.The individual university decides whether or not to offer scholarship holders a place. ln most cases,applicants are required to take an entrance examination. Please find out in time about admissionrequirements and application deadlines and interview dates at your chosen university, and bear in mindthat these may be several months before the planned start of your studies or even before the DAADawards the scholarship. We cannot cover the costs of the entrance examination. lf an applicant is offereda scholarship by the DAAD but fails to be admitted to a university, he/she may not make use of thescholarship that has already been awarded.

  • What requirements must be met?As a rule, applicants should have taken their final examinations no longer than six years before the timeof application.

    Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the time of applicationcannot be considered.

    lf the scholarship holder is enrolled in a Master or postgraduate degree programme which includes astudy period abroad, funding for this period abroad is usually only possible under the following conditions:

    o The study visit is essential for achievement of the scholarship objective.o The study period is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods cannot be

    funded, even partially.

    o The study period does not take place in the home country.

    Language skillsApplicants in the field of architecture should have a knowledge of the language of instruction thatcorresponds to the requirements of the chosen university at the latest by the time they apply foradmission to the university. lf you do not yet have the language skills required by the university at thetime of your application, your application should indicate the extent to which you are in a position to reachthe required level. After you have been awarded a scholarship, take advantage of the fundingopportunities described under "Value".

    . Applicants must be able to prove they have a basic knowledge of German at the time of theirapplication.

    The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD portal. You are also required to send 1copy/copies of the "Application summary" (PDF file), which is generated in the DAAD portal after theonline application procedure has been completed, and other appendices by post to the applicationaddress.

    Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists'DAAD

    DAAD grants provide foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry out research and

    continue their education in Germany. There are funding programmes for various qualification phases and

    stages in a career.

    The aim of this particular programme is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the

    exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues.

    Who can apply?University teachers and established academics and scientists who have usually completed a doctoral

    degree and work at a university or research institute in their home country.

    Note:Former holders of fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are requested to contact first

    the Humboldt Foundation.

    What can be funded?

    . Research stays at state or state-recognised institutions of higher education or a non-university

    research institutes in Germany. A research stay can also take place at several host institutions.

    . Funding may only be claimed once within three years'

    . Lecture tours or visits to congresses are not funded.

    Duration of the funding

    . One to three months; the length of the grant is decided by a selection committee and depends on the

    project in question and the applicant's work schedule.. The grant is non-renewable.
