New Curriculum Evening

We strongly believe that in order for children to achieve they do need to be happy, safe and secure. We are a partnership and expect your support. We expect children to respect each other and the adults in school. We expect children to try their best and have a good attitude to their learning.

We have committed teachers and assistants who give their all. We have amazing children who all have different strengths.Children take part in Enrichment activities. We have supportive parents. We strive to make our teaching as exciting and interesting as we can BUT we are not entertainers!

The new curriculum does not cover Reception as they follow the new EYFS curriculum from 2012.There is a much higher focus in the new curriculum on teaching Maths and English. The standards have also been increased. Year 2 will be following the current curriculum for Maths and English until the end of next year. This is due to the end of year statutory tests being based on this curriculum. Many areas we have taught before in KS1 are not now statutory. One of the biggest changes is that there are no levels within the new curriculum. The assessment aspect of the curriculum has been under consultation and will not be in place until September 2015. Until these changes have been confirmed, we will continue to assess against the previous national curriculum levels.

At Tavistock we are excited as it is an opportunity to develop our own curriculum for our own children. The curriculum is statutory with a heavy emphasis on English and Maths however it does not tell us what to teach explicitly. Our aim is to create a curriculum for our school that is based on the new National Curriculum while at the same time incorporates our core values and beliefs. Last term Year 1 and Year 2 worked on a whole school topic based on buildings. Until now the year groups had worked separately. The topic was very successful and we have decided we would like to work like this in future for the benefit of all children. Our new curriculum is going to be a rolling programme across year 1 and Year 2.
