Tavistock College is a large 11-18 co-educational comprehensive school with a specialism in Modern Foreign Languages. Our College serves the town of Tavistock and surrounding rural areas taking students from a wide and varied community with over half of the college coming to school by bus. As a college, we provide a broad ranging curriculum that is fully inclusive in its nature. As recognised by Ofsted

The college has a caring, welcoming ethos. As a result, students feel safe and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good.

Ofsted December 2011 We strive to ensure that every young person gains the best learning experience and achievement possible. We have high aspirations for all of our young people and are passionate about providing the appropriate curriculum to best suit the learning and aspirations of each student. This was recognised in the recent inspection.

The curriculum has been developed well since the last inspection and now provides students with a broad range of both academic and vocational courses in Years 10 and 11 that meets their needs and aspirations well.

Ofsted December 2011 Many of our students opt to stay with us for post 16 provision. Through this we aim to offer something for all students. Many of our students leave us and go on to attend some of the top universities. We are very proud to have post 16 provision offering a range of A level courses and vocational provision both at level 2 and 3. The results here are good and the provision at post 16 was rated good by Ofsted in December 2011.

Good-quality teaching enables students to develop as effective learners and make good progress in the subjects they follow.

Students attend well and make a good contribution to the wider life of the college and the community; for example, through organising fundraising events, such as ‘Children in Need’, as sports leaders, or through helping younger students with their reading.

Ofsted December 2011As a college we are improving rapidly. This year we celebrated yet another set of good exam results. At A2 our students performed exceptionally well with students achieving more A* and A grades than ever before. As with A levels, achievement at GCSE was particularly strong with 26% of our students gaining 3 or more A* A grades and 48% of all students gaining at least one A*/A grade.

We encourage you to visit our website regularly as this will keep you up to date with our latest events at the college. Please also explore our latest news page to see some of the exciting projects the college has been involved in and some of the achievements that some of our young people have achieved.

Tavistock College

Able, Gifted and Talented provision is referred to at Tavistock College as Challenge.

“Best practice for able pupils is best practice for all pupils” NACE 2007

AimsAt Tavistock College we aim: To raise the achievement of all students through fostering an inclusive ethos that enables students to discover and achieve their potentialTo provide a rich and stimulating curriculum that challenges our most able students and enables them to achieve the very top gradesTo enrich the learning experience of our most able students by providing a wide and stimulating variety of extra-curricular activities

Principles and IdentificationWe currently define our gifted students as those who are targeted 7+ A*/ A grades at GCSE or those who have been identified as having the ability to excel within a specific subject area.We define our talented students as those who have the ability to excel in sports (are recognised at least at county level). In the arts/technology each faculty uses a set criteria based on A*/A exam board criteria.Students are identified as gifted and talented using one or more of the following sources:

• Early forecast GCSE data (available from Year 7)• Teacher nominations• Information from primary schools• Information from parents

Curricular ProvisionThe targets levels and GCSE grades of challenge students will be set against the top 10% to ensure a high and consistent level of challenge across the curriculum. The needs of challenge students are met as part of normal differentiated classroom provision. This may include:

• use of more complex material• encouragement of high order thinking skills• challenging learning situations where failure is a possibility• setting creative open-ended tasks• encouraging imaginative solutions to problems• modelling professional practice and materials

Tavistock CollegeMonitoring, Tracking and EvaluationThe Assistant Principal with responsibility for Able, Gifted and Talented provision, the Assistant Principal with responsibility for Data, as well as Heads of Year and tutors will track the performance of all those students who have been identified as Able, Gifted or Talented by:

• Meeting regularly with students to discuss progress• Reviewing the latest reporting data • Speaking with subject teachers

Additional Enrichment/Extra Curricular Provision for Able, Gifted and TalentedKS3/KS4 – Challenge Programme KS5 – Aspire programme*Please see following page for information regarding both of these programmes

Challenge Programme – Year 7 to 11At Tavistock College we aim to really stretch and challenge our most able students. Consequently, we offer a range of activities and opportunities which extend knowledge beyond the curriculum and give students the opportunity to work on open ended projects and link with academic staff from many local Universities and institutions. You can find out more about the types of activities covered by the Challenge Programme on the following insert. We are flexible and also try to respond to the interests of individuals, which means that year on year the types of activities offered may vary in accordance with the interests of the year groups.

Aspire Programme – Sixth FormOur successful Sixth Form ‘Aspire Programme’ is now beginning its third year. The programme is very prestigious, and is aimed at our top achieving students. The purpose of the Aspire Programme is to help support and equip our most academically gifted students with the skills, experience and confidence needed to make successful applications to Russell Group and Oxbridge Universities.

Places on the Aspire Programme are limited. On average, we aim to take approximately the top 20 students in Year 12 based on their GCSE results. The benchmark for this currently is that students must have achieved at least 7 A-A*s grades at GCSE. We have had wonderful success with the Aspire Programme since introducing it in September 2011, with 5 Oxbridge applications and 2 Medicine applications from our first cohort to go through, with remaining students applying to top Russell Group universities and courses. Our second cohort, now in their first few weeks of Year 13 are currently in the process of applying to UCAS, but already we are seeing a strong set of Oxbridge and Medical applications. We have high hopes for their success!Although the full programme is only open to the top achieving students (an application and interview process will take place in September of Year 12) we have made it as inclusive as possible by opening up various strands to all our learners. For example, all learners in Year 12, regardless of their pathway, may attend the master class sessions if they wish to.

NB: A selection of Year 12 students may also opt in to the Extended Project Qualification, and this will be decided on a student by student basis, depending on their current progress and academic suitability.

“Earlier this year we were thrilled to have the time of Alan Wroath, Governor of the College, Classics teacher and former Principal of Launceston College, to teach two sessions to some of our able gifted and talented students in Year 8. He held a fast paced Latin workshop for those who specifically chose to extend their knowledge of Latin. He also led a session on Greek, in which students learnt the Greek alphabet.”

“Now that Oxford University is placing greater emphasis on providing more information to prospective Oxbridge candidates Exeter College arranged an invaluable Taster Day for ten of our Year 10 students to experience life in the College as well as meet undergraduates.” February 2013

“The Year 9 G&T group went to see the law in action at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court recently as part of their provision directed at raising career aspirations. They were welcomed to court by local magistrates and saw a wide range of cases ranging from arson to theft to assault. Several of the cases were dealt with by videolink with Exeter prison, which surprised many of the students, while some of the defendants were brought into the dock from the cells below.” July 2013

Pastoral Care and Inclusive Support

Pas

l

Tavistock CollegeTavistock College is an Inclusive school and this has been recognised by both the Local Authority and Ofsted. We know our students well and target intervention in line with a 3 tiered approach; the core offer of support for all, targeted intervention from the Inclusion Team, and external support for the most vulnerable of our students.

We use fortnightly safeguarding / early intervention meetings to review the provision for our most vulnerable students and re-plan if needed for the most ‘at risk’. Students are identified using academic, behaviour, safeguarding and attendance data. We know every child and plan support for all young people as well as those with specific barriers to learning.

Our Inclusion Team based in our Inclusion Hub, includes our highly skilled pastoral leaders and personal tutors and they all communicate effectively and in a timely manner to ensure that no child is left behind either academically or personally. In particular our approaches to closing the attainment gap and providing personalised curriculum plans for young people have been instrumental in improving the life chances of the young people at Tavistock College.

Pastoral Structure:In Year 7 we have invested to create smaller tutor groups (Max 15) to ease the transition process. We have a static Year 7 Tutor Team and Head of Year who are experts in the transition from Primary School to Secondary School. The other year teams are based in zones within the College where each one is a smaller school within what is a very large site. Once in year 8 the students remain with that tutor until they finish in year 11. At Post 16 we also have a static team who are experts in post 16 and the transition process from year 11 into sixth form as well as from sixth form and on into education, employment or training.

We have employed Academic Support Co-ordinators for Mathematics, English and Science who work with targeted students to raise their achievement in the core subjects.

Our Inclusion Team Structure is below:

Tavistock College

The MFL Department at Tavistock College believes that languages are becoming ever more important in an increasingly connected world. The skills, knowledge and understanding developed through the delivery of the MFL curriculum are an integral part of a young person’s all-round education forging the competencies needed to enter the work place at the end of their full time education. Furthermore, the increased understanding of other cultures helps students to develop greater awareness of the wider modern society. We aim to provide students, regardless of ability, with an enjoyable, practical skill in their Modern Foreign Language. In Year 7, students have the opportunity to experience the three languages offered; French, Spanish and Japanese through a curriculum that has been designed to give them a firm basis in the basic skills need to learn a language and linking strongly with the whole school literacy focus. In Year 8 and 9, students specialise in a language that is best suited to their needs and strengths. We aspire to give students the necessary skills and confidence to continue into KS4, and even KS5.Through a motivating and encouraging atmosphere, we strive to inspire students to achieve in all the skill areas; reading, writing, listening and speaking. We encourage them to take risks in an environment where students can feel safe to learn from their mistakes and develop a mutually supporting relationship with their peers and their teachers. We endeavour to do this through careful questioning and peer- and self- assessment, as well as through interactive methods of teaching and learning. Students are encouraged to develop their confidence to assess their own progress and to set themselves targets to improve. Increasing student motivation and aspiration to learn and make sustained improvement. Students are taught from the beginning of Year 7 to recognise the criteria for quality work and acquire the necessary skills to assess and improve their own work.

Tavistock College

The Sixth Form at Tavistock College offers a broad range of academic A levels and vocational courses. As well as providing breadth, the College prides itself on excellence at Key Stage 5. The College consistently sees a handful of students win places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and on prestigious courses to study medicine, each year; a raft of students gain places at Russell Group universities and many others graduate to higher learning, apprenticeships or into successful careers. Our aim is to provide clear advice and guidance, opportunity and learning experiences to enable all to progress to their chosen futures. We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality of teaching and learning. We also provide an all-round education comprising of a wealth of opportunities for students to volunteer in the College and wider community, lead younger students and seize new experience. We have developed a highly successful ‘Aspire’ programme to raise the aspirations of the most academically able: Students are given the opportunity to visit prestigious universities and institutions such as the Houses of Parliament, Stock Exchange and law courts in London in order to widen horizons and raise aspirations. However, we aim to nurture, challenge and develop all students to enable their success. 2013 has seen two students win places at Oxford University, at least one other student has progressed onto a course to study Medicine and all students who wanted to have places at university. 33% of students gained 1 or more A*A grades and a fifth of all grades were at A and A*. This is a 2% rise from last year. 43% of our students gained a A-B grades.

Tavistock College

At Tavistock College we are continually seeking to improve the service we offer to students, their parents and the community. An important part of our development strategy is to listen to the voices of our students.Students play a crucial role in the improvement of Tavistock College by undertaking supervisory, leadership and administrative positions. We encourage our students to contribute actively to their school community and empower and support them in their key roles.Students from Year 7 to Year 13 are able to share and voice ideas, opinions and viewpoints through a variety of forums and Student Voice activities. These include the Student Leadership Team, Student Focus Groups and wider Student Voice activities such as online questionnaires. The aim is for the student body to have the opportunity to suggest areas of improvement either directly or to a representative, making sure that each voice is heard and has the ability to make a differenceOur students feel a deep sense of ownership and belonging to their school.
