This programme provides an insight into a numberof areas of general management, with particularemphasis on key aspects of international business.It is designed to equip you with the necessarytools, techniques and concepts to understandhow international business is conducted and howfirms and countries can thrive in today’s globalmarketplace.

The MSc is built around a range of compulsorygeneral management modules (see list right),which are taken primarily during the first threemonths of the course. You are then offered achoice of options which allow you to cover topicsof interest in more depth.

Once you have successfully completed the taughtmodules, you undertake the Business Report,which is a substantial research-led report offeringyou excellent opportunities to further your careerobjectives. The Business Report gives you thescope to explore a firm, industry or businessissue of particular interest to you. We supportyou throughout with our full programme of events,personal development workshops, one-to-onespecialist careers guidance, industry guestspeakers and individual supervision.

Our approach is to challenge, inspire and developyour skills to help you operate effectively andresponsibly in a global business environment.Students on the MSc International Business andManagement value the opportunity to broaden theirknowledge of business concepts, work with peoplefrom a range of cultures, develop their managerialskills and enhance their career prospects. One ofthe main attractions of the programme is the focuson exploring current business and managementissues through a wide range of practical learning

What attracted you to Kent? Having completed an undergraduatedegree in Theology, I wanted an insightinto the business world. This MSc offeredme an opportunity to gain businessknowledge in a range of different areas.

What have you particularly enjoyed?I enjoyed meeting interesting peoplefrom different nationalities, they broughtdifferent views to seminar discussions,which made them more vibrant.

Describe your career path sinceleaving Kent?I am a trainee Company Secretary inan accountancy firm.

What is a typical day like in yourcurrent role?I prepare documentation for submissionto Companies House, ensure clients areprovided with statutory compliance andensure legal registers are kept up-to-date.

What are your future aspirations?I want to become a qualified CharteredSecretary, gaining ICSA certification.

What attracted you to Kent? The course structure and taught moduleswere exactly the ones I was looking for,with my prior working knowledge of HRand recruitment and selection. What have you particularly enjoyed?As far as the programme is concerned,all the modules are extremely insightfuland come together well to give an overallunderstanding of people managementpractices in organisations today.Seminars help cement concepts throughcase studies and discussions everyweek. On a personal level, I have enjoyedmaking friends from all around the world.I learnt so much about different foods,beliefs, governments, culture, just bymeeting and talking to my friends.

What attracted you to Kent? I was attracted to this programme asit allowed for an expansion of skillsdeveloped during my undergraduatedegree in Writing and MassCommunications, adding analyticalskill to abstract thinking. In addition,the University of Kent has an internationalreputation as a highly reputable institutionthat embraces a multicultural communityin the historic, beautiful city of Canterbury.

What have you particularly enjoyed?I particularly enjoyed the BuyerDecision Making module, which gavea psychological perspective on theprogramme content and broadened myunderstanding of motivational theoriesand frameworks. I also enjoyed livingamong a diverse multicultural community,where I learned new habits and ways oflife on a daily basis. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and work withstudents from a wide variety of social andcultural backgrounds, crossing culturalboundaries and embracing new traditions.

What about your employmentprospects?The MSc in Marketing built my foundationin research and report presentation,allowing me to develop the necessaryskills to pursue a career in academia.My current plan is to work in marketingfor a year, before pursuing a PhD inconsumer behaviour and ideally remainingin academia to teach at university level.

What have you particularly enjoyed?I enjoyed the Corporate Finance modulebecause the lecturer was great. Heexplained everything very clearly and nottoo fast! He gave us good backgrounddetails first, which suited me. Overall,I felt the programme was good, nottoo stressful with a good timetable.

Dr Yu-Lun Liu

Lecturer in Marketing; Director, MScDigital Marketing and AnalyticsPrior to joining Kent Business School, Dr Liuworked for many years in an IT company asa software developer and engineer. He has aparticular interest in information systems andtechnology management. Dr Liu also has researchinterests in online consumer psychology andconsumer behaviour.

Professor Ekaterini Panopoulou

Professor in Finance; Director, MScFinance programmesProfessor Panopoulou’s main research interests liein the fields of financial econometrics, time series(modelling and forecasting), financial economicsand international finance. Professor Panopoulouholds a PhD in Econometrics (University ofPiraeus). She has been working in the area offinancial econometrics and forecasting since 2001and has published over 30 papers and contributedchapters to a number of books. Her careerincludes working for the University of Piraeus,National University of Ireland, Maynooth, andthe National Bank of Greece. She is one of thefounding members of the Methods in InternationalFinance Network (MIFN), a consortium ofuniversities promoting research in the areaof international finance.

Dr Virginia Spiegler

Senior Lecturer in Operations andSupply Chain Management; Director, MScLogistics and Supply Chain ManagementDr Spiegler joined Kent Business School in 2016and is a member of the Management Scienceresearch group. Her research focuses on modellingand designing inventory and order-based controlsystems that overcome nonlinear, real-worlddynamics and on building resilient supply chains.

Dr Spiegler’s work has provided a theoreticalcontribution to the literature on supply chainrisk management and proposed an assessmentframework for supply chain resilience. Byencapsulating the attributes of resilience andusing an iterative cycle between theory andpractice, her research helped companies, suchas those in the food and drink industry, to increasetheir ability to deal with disturbances emergingfrom its supply chain.

Professor Shaomin Wu

Professor in Business/Applied Statistics;Director, MSc Business AnalyticsProfessor Wu has considerable experience in areassuch as applied stochastic processes, statisticaldata analysis, data mining, and risk management.He received his PhD and MSc in Applied Statisticsand has written widely on business data analysisand applied stochastic processes in a varietyof publications such as European Journal ofOperational Research and International Journalof Production Economics.

Dr Madeleine Wyatt

Dr Omar Al-Tabbaa

Senior Lecturer in Strategy andInternational Business; Director, MScInternational Business and ManagementCurrently, Dr Al-Tabbaa has two overarchingresearch interests. The first focuses on thedynamics of inter-organisational relationships (IOR)and their impact on value creation and capture.This includes: examining the dynamics of alliancemanagement capabilities in different settings(including cross-sector collaboration, SMEs andfamily businesses) and how this might affectpartners’ co-innovation capacity and value co-creation; and understanding the role of inter-organisational social capital during the technologytransfer process in university-industry collaboration.

For the second research area, he addressesthe application of strategy-as-practice (SAP)perspective in untraditional settings. Specifically,investigating the social dynamics of projectmanagement as a practice and also thecollaborative relationship and impact of socialdynamics on the scope of collaborative innovation.

The annual tuition fees for 2019/20 for full-time students on postgraduatetaught programmes in Kent Business School can be found at www.kent.ac.uk/finance-student/fees

Kent Business School Early Bird SchemeKent Business School is offering applicantsincentives to commit early under our Early BirdScheme. Applicants who apply before 31 Marchand subsequently accept their offer and pay theirdeposit by 30 April, will automatically receive a10% discount on their tuition fee payment for theirpostgraduate taught programme.

Kent Business School ScholarshipsKent Business School is able to supportpostgraduate taught students throughmerit-based scholarships to help reducethe cost of postgraduate study.

We can award funding to exceptional studentswho are likely to perform consistently at the top oftheir class and/or make an outstanding contributiondue to their work experience and/or diversityof background. Scholarships are awarded tostudents who have the potential to be successfulambassadors for Kent Business School duringtheir studies and, following graduation, as partof the School’s alumni community, assisting withnetworking and recruitment events and fairs intheir home countries.

Successful candidates will be asked to contributeto the School by undertaking activities, which mayinclude sitting on the Student Council or becominga student representative. Other activities thatscholarship awardees can undertake includeplaying an active part in the running of theStudent Business Society on campus, becomingan e-buddy for prospective applicants, writing astudent blog or assisting with postgraduaterecruitment events on campus.

Kent Business School Bursary FundKent Business School can also assist postgraduatetaught students via its bursary fund.

International student scholarshipsKent offers a number of scholarships tointernational students for entry at taught Master’slevel. They are worth £5,000 (for one year of study)towards the cost of tuition fees and are offeredto nationals of any country paying fees at theoverseas rate.

Loyalty awardsThe University of Kent values its graduates andalumni, and is pleased to offer special schemesto assist with the cost of postgraduate study:• the Alumni Loyalty Discount offers a 10%

Could you describe your career path sinceleaving Kent?I took a few months’ break post-study to travel andthen started to scout around for jobs after settlingback in my home country of Malaysia. One of thetoughest interviews I had was for the Central Bankof Malaysia, an institution with a remarkablereputation in my country and, to my surprise,I managed to secure a job despite competitionfrom 3,500 other applicants.

What are you doing now?I am currently working for the bank as an Executivefor Strategic Planning and Communication for theCurrency Management Division. My role is quitevaried and I am doing different things every day.Currency management is a niche market, sothere’s always lots of things to learn and explore.

How have your studies at Kent BusinessSchool helped you in your career?My degree opened up a wider range of careeroptions, encouraging me to set high expectationsfor myself. The experience I gained at Kent hasreally helped to equip me with the expertiserequired to go into this challenging industry.

What’s next for you? I see myself running my own business a fewyears down the road. I will go all out to meet myobjectives with the determination to learn newthings. I hope to put into practice all the experienceI have gained and challenge myself to strive to bethe best.

What did you particularly enjoy?Kent is very culturally diverse and I enjoyedmeeting friends and making connections withpeople from all over the globe. This really enabledme to adapt to cultural differences, build on mycommunication skills and develop as a person.

What about the teaching?The lecturers were experienced and well-matchedto the subjects they taught. Alongside the formalteaching, they were able to share their valuablereal-life experiences with us.

Below, you will find information on entry requirements and applicationprocedures for Kent Business School’s taught postgraduate programmes.

English language requirementsStudents whose first language is not English, andwho live or study in a non-majority English-speakingcountry are required to have an appropriategrade/score in an approved English languageexamination as defined by UK Visas andImmigration (UKVI).

The English language requirements for all ourprogrammes are as follows:• International English Language Test (IELTS)

with a minimum overall score of 6.5 (whichincludes a minimum of 6.0 in each component)

• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTEAcademic) with a minimum overall score of62 (which includes a minimum of 60 in eachsubtest)

• Cambridge English: Advanced and Proficiencywith a minimum overall score of 176 (whichincludes a minimum of 169 in reading andwriting, and 162 in speaking and listening)

• Internet-based TOEFL with a minimum overallscore of 90 (which includes a minimum of 22in reading, 21 in writing, 20 in listening and 22in speaking).
